NOTE:Somechimneysneedtobe“primed,”orwarmedup,
beforetheywilldrawsufcientlytostartare.Tocorrectthis
situation,rollupacouplepiecesofnewspaper,placethem
ontopofthekindlingandtowardthebackofthestove,light
them,and closethe doors.Thisshould heat thechimney
enoughtoinitiateadraft.
Oncethedraftisestablished,openthefrontdoorandlight
therestofthefuelfromthebottom.Donotlightthemain
bed of fuel until the chimney begins drawing, and repeat
theprocedureasoftenasnecessaryiftheinitialattemptis
unsuccessful.
4. Onceagoodemberbedofatleast3-4"(76-102mm)
hasformed,addthedesiredamountofwoodandclose
theprimaryaircontroltoamedium-lowsetting.There
volume will diminish immediately, but the Montpelier
MediumInsertwillcontinuetoheatup.Maintaincontrol
ofthereusingtheprimaryaircontrol,andremember:
reducethesettingforlessheat,increasethesettingfor
moreheat.RefertotheaircontrolsettingschartonPage
11forrecommendedsettingsatdifferentburnrates.
Do not over-re this heater.
Overring may cause a house re, or can result in
permanent damage to the stove. If an exterior part of
the Montpelier Medium Insert glows, you are overring.
Reloading and Reviving a Wood Fire
Settheaircontrolon“High,”andwaitatleastfteenseconds
forthedrafttoincrease.Turntheconvectionbloweroff.Open
thedoorslowly.
IMPORTANT: While the stove is hot, toss and sift the
coals with each stove loading. This loosens and helps
burn coals that become buried in the ash. Push coals
away from the three bottom air jets. Creating this “void”
helps maintain a reliable re.
Check the ash level, and remove excess ash. Three (3)
primaryairholeslocatedunderthefrontbrickprovideairto
thecoalbed.(Figure11)Theseholesshouldbeclearedof
ashforproperperformance.
Addthefuel,smallerpiecesrst.Ifitisnecessarytouse
woodsmallerthanthe18"(460mm)optimumsize,besure
tollthereboxascompletelyaspossiblebyloadingthe
woodpiecesalternatelyontheleftandright.Splitwoodwill
llthereboxmorecompletelyandreducethefrequencyof
reloading.Ifpossible,stackwooddiagonallytomaximizeair
spacesbetweenredpieces.

fyouhaveanemberbedofatleast2-3"(51-76mm),the
airsettingmaynotneedtobeadjusted.Iftheemberbedis
lessthan2-3"(51-76mm),youmayhavetoleavetheair
settingonhighforafewminutesuntilamesappear.
Finally,adjusttheaircontrolandfanspeedforyourdesired
heatlevel.
Followtheseguidelinesasyoustartandmaintainthere,and
removetheashes.Priortostartingarewithacoldstove,it
isrecommendedtoclearthelowerprimaryairholeslocated
underthefrontbrick.Todothis,removetheandironandlift
outthefrontrefractorybrick.Sweepanyashaccumulation
outofthethree(3)airslots.Keepingtheseslotsclearofash
willensurebetterperformance.
1. Opentheprimaryaircontrolfully.
2. Laysomecrumplednewspapersinthebottom.Placeon
thepapersixoreightpiecesofdry,nely-splitkindling.
Onthekindlinglaytwoorthreelargersticksofsplitdry
woodapproximately1-2"(25-50mm).
Do not use chemicals or uids to start the re. Do not burn
garbage or ammable uids such as gasoline, naptha,
or engine oil. Also, never use gasoline-type lantern fuel,
kerosene, charcoal lighter uid, or similar liquids to start
or “freshen up” a re in this heater. Keep all such liquids
well away from the heater while it is in use.
3. Lightthenewspaperandclosethedoor.Graduallybuild
uptherebyaddingafew3-5"(76-127mm)diameter
splits.
Ifthisisyourinitialbreak-inre,letthereburnbrightly,but
nottoexcess.Controlthere’sintensitybyadjustingtheair
controllever.Afteranhourorsostopaddingwoodsothat
therediesoutgradually.
Forongoingoperationaftertheinitialbreak-in,continueto
addafewsticksatatimeofaprogressivelylargersize.Be
suretokeepthefuelloadbehindthefrontgratebaratall
times. Continueuntil you havea live emberbed at least
3-4"(76-102mm)deep.Thismaytakeanhourorlonger,
particularlywhentheMontpelierMediumInsertisventedtoan
exteriormasonrychimneyorwhenyouarejuststartingare.
NOTE:Effectivenessofa“top-down”methodtostartare.
Smoke emissions when starting a re can be difcult to
controlbecausetheinsertisnotyetheatedtoitsoptimum
temperature.Onemethodofreducingemissionsduringa
coldstart-upistheuseofa“top-down”kindlingprocedure.
Inthis,placelargerpiecesofkindlingonthebottomofthe
kindlingpilefollowedbysmallerandsmallerpiecesasthe
pileisaddedto.Verynelysplitpiecesshouldbeonthe
top.Lightthekindlingpilewithamatchatthetopandallow
thekindlingtoburndownwardintothelargerpieces.This
reduces smoke by slowly increasing the re size without
creatinganair-starvedcondition.
You’llsoonndthattheinsertisHOT WHILE IN OPERATION!
KEEP CHILDREN, CLOTHING, AND FURNITURE AWAY.
CONTACT MAY CAUSE SKIN BURNS.
Operate your Montpelier Medium Insert only with the
door fully closed. If the door is left partially open, gas
and ame may be drawn out of the replace opening,
creating risks of both re and smoke.
