Important Guidelines
The following guidelines must be adhered to in order to prevent problems
and to ensure proper operation.
Do Not Hot Swap a “Good” VN-SAN RAID Drive
The VN-SAN monitors the status of each of the RAID drives and maintains
configuration and backup data on each drive. In the event of a drive failure
the system will back up all data to another drive. You can then replace the
“bad” drive. If you remove a “good” drive without following the correct
procedure (see Nexsan manual), that drive will become unusable and all data
on it will be lost. You can however, reuse the drive by reformatting it and
reinstalling it.
Do Not Change the DVR or NVR Name
At factory setup, the VN-SAN unit was configured using the factory assigned
DVR and NVR names. If you change a DVR or NVR name, the VN-SAN will
no longer recognize the unit and will not be available in the storage database.
If the names must be changed, refer to XX215-20, which contains the
complete configuration procedure.
Do Not Change the IP Address on the DVR, NVR or VN-SAN
At factory setup, the VN-SAN unit was configured using factory assigned
static IP addresses, typically 10.10.10.xx. The VN-SAN uses an odd number,
for example: 10.10.10.1. The DVR and NVR units use an even number, for
example 10.10.10.2. If you change an IP address, the units will no longer be
able to communicate with each other. If the IP addresses must be changed,
refer to XX215-20, which contains the complete configuration procedure.

VN-NVR/Workstation/Kollector VN-SAN Setup Quick Manual | 3
General
This manual describes how to set up a Vicon VN-NVR workstation (NVR) or
Kollector® Hybrid Digital Video Recorder (DVR) with a VN-SAN Nexsan®
SATABoy® or SATABeast® network storage unit. The scope of this manual
is to unpack and install the units, connect the VN/SAN to the NVR or DVR
and ensure ViconNet® is mapped to the VN/SAN storage unit. Note that the
NVRs will require to be registered before you can check the mapping. DVRs
are preregistered at the factory.
Note: This manual does not provide instructions on configuring the VN-SAN
unit to work with the DVR or NVR. The units are preconfigured at the factory.
If your units require configuration, refer to XX215-20.
Prerequisites The following is required to set up the units:
Vicon DVR or NVR installation and operation manuals
Nexsan manuals for SATABeast and SATABoy
Netswitch and required cabling
NVR or DVR must have two RJ-45 network ports
Note: The contents of each package will be different, depending upon the
system capacity, units ordered, etc. The instructions provided are general
and may not address your specific installation.

4| VN-NVR/Workstation/Kollector VN-SAN Setup Quick Manual
Installation
The system must be set up, connected and powered on in a specific order to
ensure proper operation. Refer to the DVR, NVR, Netswitch™ and Nexsan
manuals to determine the installation requirements for each unit.
Cautions:
Vicon systems and components require a clean, stable power source.
Voltage irregularities such as surges, drops, and interruptions can
affect the operation of your equipment and, in severe cases, damage
certain components. Vicon requires the use of uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) systems. Failure to comply voids the unit warranty.
Do not power on the VN-SAN unit without the drives installed.
1. Unpack the system components for the VN-SAN unit(s).
Notes:
The drives are not installed in the VN-SAN units and must be
installed on-site.
Each VN-SAN unit has a unique RAID system number. It is important
that each drive be used only in its designated VN-SAN unit and the
VN-SAN be used only with the ViconNet DVR or NVR that it has been
configured with at the factory.
The ViconNet DVR or NVR, the VN-SAN, each drive and the shipping
box all have labels indicating the RAID system number and the serial
number of the VN-SAN unit (see below). This is to prevent any mix-
up of drives at installations with multiple VN-SAN units.

VN-NVR/Workstation/Kollector VN-SAN Setup Quick Manual | 5
In addition to the label shown above, the VN-SAN unit has serial
number labels on the right side of the chassis attached to the outside
and inside of the unit (see below) from the manufacturer. Verify that
the serial number matches the drives and other equipment.
2. Mount the VN-SAN unit(s) in the rack prior to installing the drives. When
loaded with the drives, the units are extremely heavy and difficult to lift.
Caution:
Do not power the units on prior to installing the drives.
3. Slide the VN-SAN unit out on its rails and install the disk carriers
containing the drives in the appropriate VN-SAN unit (as described
above), in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions in the Nexsan
manuals. Typically, the disk carriers are installed left to right.
Note: Each slot is labeled, but the VN-SAN supports roaming, so drives can
be installed in any slot and the system will recognize them.
4. Mount the DVRs, NVRs and other equipment in racks or other locations
as required in accordance with each of the unit’s manuals.

6| VN-NVR/Workstation/Kollector VN-SAN Setup Quick Manual
Wiring Connections
Connect the units as follows. A typical installation with 2 VN-NVRs connected
to a VN-SAN SATABoy is shown.
Caution:
Do not power on units until instructed to in the following steps.
1. Connect monitor, keyboard and mouse to NVR or DVR.
2. Connect an RJ-45 cable (not supplied) from the RAID port on the NVR or
DVR to an open port on the Netswitch unit. Repeat for each additional
NVR or DVR (maximum of 4) that will access the VN-SAN unit.
Notes:
The network ports on the NVR and DVR units are marked with stickers
indicating if the port is for LAN or RAID connection. The RAID port must
be connected to the VN-SAN unit through the Netswitch. The LAN port is
used for the network connection to ViconNet.
You may connect the NVR or DVR to port NET 0 on the VN-SAN unit;
however the preferred method is to use a Netswitch unit connected to
NET 0. This is the only option for multiple DVRs or NVRs. The NET 1 port
is disabled.
3. Connect an RJ-45 (not supplied) cable from the VN-SAN NET 0 port to
the Netswitch unit.
4. Connect power to all devices and power on in the following sequence:
a. Monitor.
b. Netswitch.
c. VN-SAN. Power on power supply PSU0 and then PSU1. Wait
until VN-SAN fully powers on (three LEDS on front panel turn
solid green) before powering on DVR or NVR units.

VN-NVR/Workstation/Kollector VN-SAN Setup Quick Manual | 7
Note: Failure to follow the power on sequence may result in an alarm to
sound. No action is required as alarm will self clear.
d. Power on DVR or NVR units in accordance with the procedures in
the unit’s manual. A Delay Run indication may display on the
monitor. This is normal and will disappear when the ViconNet
system is ready.
5. Check the VN-SAN to DVR or NVR connection by navigating to My
Computer and verifying that the VN-SAN RAID drives are present.
Note: When using the VN-SAN with an NVR/Workstation, ViconNet will open
as a Viewer and the unit will have to be registered. Refer to NVR and
ViconNet documentation for registration instructions. Kollectors are pre-
registered and will be immediately ready to use.
6. Check the ViconNet connection to the DVR or NVR as follows:
a. Start ViconNet and from the ViconNet Main window, click Setup.
The Setup Site Selection window displays.
