To ensure that the KRX-3V5 is protected during a power surge or failure and that no important data is lost, it
should be connected to an uninterruptible power source (UPS) before use.
To connect the UPS:
•Locate the KRX-3V5’s power cord near the 24 VAC power supply. Connect the 24 VAC power supply
to the UPS power receptacle.
•Connect the UPS power cord to the wall outlet.
•Power on the UPS and ensure that it is working properly.

Chapter 1 - Introduction
The information in this manual covers the installation and operation of the KRX-3V5 Video Decoder. This
system should only be installed by a qualified technician using common hand tools and approved materials
and wiring practices in accordance with the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, state and local wiring
codes.
The KRX-3V5 is a Video Decoder used to convert network data from a digital IP source to an analog output
for display on any monitor with an S-Video, mini D-sub or coaxial BNC-F input. This enables distribution
directly to a monitor and eliminates the need for separate workstations with dedicated monitors. It is sold in a
prepackaged configuration ready for analog monitor connection. It will provide a video (frame per second) rate
of up to 90 fps over 3 channels or up to 30 fps per channel (25 fps for PAL). It is fully compatible with the
ViconNet software (Version 5.X) application. For software information, refer to the ViconNet Software manual,
XX113. The KRX-3V5 can be networked with all models of Version 4.X Kollector Elite NVRs and ViconNet
Workstations to create a complete system.
The KRX-3V5 complies with CE and meets requirements for an FCC Class A computing device.
Vicon strongly recommends the use of line conditioners, voltage regulators and uninterruptible power supply
(UPS) systems in the electrical power service.
NOTE: Read all instructions before beginning the installation.
How to Use This Manual
This manual was designed to provide the best overall instructions for the installation and operation of the
KRX-3V5 Video Decoder. The graphics and terminology used in this manual have been carefully selected to
enable a clear and distinct understanding of the KRX-3V5 and its configuration. This manual has been
formatted to present distinct methods of installation for all levels of experience installers.

The provided accessory kit contains necessary items needed to install and wire the decoder during
installation as follows:

Unpacking and Inspection
All Vicon equipment is tested and inspected before leaving the factory. It is the carrier’s responsibility to
provide suitable delivery.
Inspect the cartons upon delivery and, if damage is present, make detailed notes on the carrier’s bill. Then,
obtain the carrier agent’s signature and file a damage claim as soon as possible.
Open the cartons and inspect the equipment for damage. Save the cartons and packing material. If damage is
present, contact the carrier and file a damage claim immediately. If the equipment must be returned for repair,
follow the instructions in Chapter 7, Shipping Instructions.

Chapter 2 – Quick Installation

1. Unpack the decoder, and accessories, from its box. Verify that hand tools and a suitable Netswitch/
Kollector/ViconNet Workstation or VN-NVR are available for connection.
2. Perform physical installation (to a desktop, wall, or rack) using the optional mounting kits, if required.
3. Make all connections to monitors, LAN, and power.
NOTE: The KRX-3V5 maybe powered by PoE using the LAN connection or with 24 VAC. Recommended 24
VAC power supply models are the S24WPS-1 for 120VAC installations and S24PS-230 for 230 VAC
installations or latest equivalents.
4. Power on the decoder. Run the provided ViconNet CD and choose software, KRX-3V5 setup, to
configure the correct IP address, using the provided MAC address. (See your System Administrator
for assistance in IP addressing.)
5. Run the ViconNet Virtual Matrix Controller (VMC) application and verify that the KRX-3V5 displays on
the monitor layout setup list.

Chapter 3 - Installation
For first-time installers, these steps provide the most thorough and accurate instructions.
About This Chapter
This chapter details the complete installation of the KRX-3V5 Video Decoder. The following sections provide
information as follows:
Unpacking the KRX-3V5 defines how to remove the unit and accessories from the box.
Required Items for Installation defines items needed for installation.
Unit Components defines all connections on the front panel and their use.
Mounting defines all methods of securing the decoder for permanent use.
Installing the KRX-3V5 describes how to install all necessary peripheral devices directly to the decoder.
Unpacking the Decoder
Carefully open the carton. Remove the accessory kit and the KRX-3V5 from the box and place them on a
large, flat working surface. Open the accessory kit and verify the contents against the list in Table 1-1.
Required Items for Installation
To properly install the decoder there must be simple hand tools available such as a screwdriver, wrenches,
pliers and wire cutters/strippers. To set up the decoder for operation, there must be a PC computer running
the ViconNet (VN) Setup software.

Unit Components
This section describes the KRX-3V5 front and rear panels.
Panel Connectors and Indicators
The following picture shows the KRX-3V5 panel. Each panel component is described below.

The KRX-3V5’s rear panel contains the following components:
RS-232 Port: A 5-position terminal block used for diagnostics (for service use).
Network Port: A standard RJ-45 connector used to connect to a 100Base-T LAN/WAN. A green LED
indicates network connectivity and a yellow LED indicates data activity. Unit power can be supplied if
connected to PoE (Power over Ethernet) compliant network equipment.
Power Port: A 2-position terminal block used to connect power (24 VAC) (if not using PoE – see above).
Channel 1 Video Output: A mini-D-sub VGA output, standard BNC-F composite output or S-Video output is
provided for connection to a single monitor with one of those input types.
Channel 2 Video Output: A mini-D-sub VGA output, standard BNC-F composite output or S-Video output is
provided for connection to a single monitor with one of those input types.
Channel 3 Video Output: A standard BNC-F composite output used for connection to a monitor.
Alarm Port: 5-position terminal block. Future use.
RS422/485 Port: 5-position terminal block. Future use.
Audio: 1 pair of audio jacks. Future use.
Front Panel LEDs: The front panel includes a blue status LED (Status) and 3 bicolor channel LEDs
(numbered 1, 2, 3). The following table describes their operation.

Mounting
There are several types of mounting recommended for the decoder as shown below.
Desktop
The KRX-3V5 can rest on a clean and dry flat surface, like a desk or tabletop. Four (4) rubber bumpers are
provided for stable mounting. There must be an area of no less than 3 in. (76 mm) left around the exterior to
provide suitable airflow for cooling. Do not place items on the cover.
Rack
The KRX-3V5 can be mounted in a standard 19-inch (483 mm) wide vertical rack shelf using the KX-4-RK2
(double) rack mount kit. The shelf is not provided. The decoder can be rested on the shelf or fastened using
the provided mounting plate.
Wall Mounting
The KRX-3V5 can be wall mounted using the KX-4-WM wall mount kit.

Installing the KRX-3V5
After the decoder is mounted, follow the steps in this section to install the decoder unit hardware.
Step 1: Connecting the Cabling

IMPORTANT NOTES:
The connection of external hardware may require simple hand tools.
WARNING: Disable the AC power to prevent installer injury and damage to the unit.
Before beginning the hardware installation, ensure that the following environmental conditions have been met:
•The surface on which the KRX-3V5 is to be placed must be level, clean and dry.
•The room or area temperature is climate controlled for human occupancy.
Step 1: Connecting the Cabling
This procedure describes the required cabling that must be installed in order to use the decoder.
To connect the cabling:
Perform the following connections (refer to Figure 3-1):
1. Insert one side of a standard LAN cable to the Network Port’s RJ-45 connector. Insert the other RJ-45
connector into the LAN side of the network (switch, wall jack, etc.). Verify that a PC or ViconNet
workstation is available for software configuration.
2. Connect the monitors to the KRX-3V5 rear panel using mini-D-sub, coaxial BNC-M or S-Video cabling as
required by monitor type.
Step 2: Connecting the Power Supply
To ensure that the KRX-3V5 is protected during a power surge or failure and that no data is lost, it should be
connected to an uninterruptible power source (UPS) before use. The power supply must be supplied by the
customer.
NOTES: The KRX-3V5 maybe powered by PoE using the LAN connection or with 24 VAC. Recommended 24
VAC power supply models are the S24WPS-1 for 120 VAC installations and S24PS-230 for 230 VAC
installations or latest equivalents.
If you are using PoE, skip the following steps.
To connect the UPS:
1. Place the KRX-3V5 near the 24 VAC power supply. Connect the 24 VAC power supply to the UPS power
receptacle.
2. Connect the UPS power cord to the wall outlet.
3. Power on the UPS and ensure that it is working properly.
NOTE: Refer to your UPS device’s User Manual for details on proper connection.

Chapter 4 - Operation
About This Chapter
This chapter details power on, power off and configuration of the KRX-3V5 Video Decoder. For full
programming and operation information, refer to the ViconNet Software manual, XX113-0X (where X is a
revision number between 0 and 9). The following sections provide information as follows:
Powering-On the Decoder guides the user through proper power on and boot procedures.
Powering-Off the Decoder guides the user through proper shut down procedures.
Configuring the Decoder guides the user through network setup.
Powering-On the KRX-3V5
To power on the decoder:
1. Verify that the KRX-3V5 is set up as detailed in Chapter 3, Installation.
2. Ensure that the 24 VAC power supply to the KRX-3V5 or connect PoE via network cable (RJ-45). The
Status Indicator will illuminate blue (blinking) to indicate the decoder is ON and running properly.
Powering-Off the KRX-3V5
To power off the decoder:
With the decoder operational, disconnect the 24 VAC power supply or, if using PoE, disconnect the
network cable (RJ-45). The power indicator will cease to illuminate, indicating a power OFF condition.

Configuring the ViconNet (IP/LAN) Version
The KRX-3V5 is shipped with one CD that contains the ViconNet Version 5 software needed to setup your IP
system, including the application setup, the firmware and setup software (VNSetup). Ensure that the ViconNet
Workstation meets the minimum requirements, and is running the ViconNet application (Version 5)
(VNSetup). VNSetup is found on the included CD. Refer to appropriate ViconNet documentation.
Network Considerations
The KRX-3V5 can be connected to any ViconNet network (Version 5 software) via the VMC.
The default parameters on the KRX-3V5 are:

On first startup, the KRX-3V5 will attempt to establish connection to the Nucleus with the default address
(1.1.1.1). Connecting it to an active Nucleus is done through the VNSetup utility.
Groups and Users Restrictions
ViconNet allows creating Multiple Groups and Users in order to limit the rights to different levels. For more
information on how to create Users and Groups, refer to the latest revision of ViconNet VMC manual XX177.

Configuring the Network Settings
Note: Before starting, make sure that the following is accomplished:
VNSetup is installed on the configuring PC\Workstation. Installation is done using the CD included.
Make sure the MAC address and password of the KRX-3V5 is available. Use MAC Address log provided.
Verify that the KRX-3V5 is physically connected to the configuring workstation via the network.
VNSetup is used to configure network settings. VNSetup consists of several tabs. Each tab provides different
functionality. To access VNSetup, from the desktop, double-click the Viconnet VNSetup icon. The Select tab
screen displays.
To find the KRX-3V5 that you want to configure, proceed as follows:
1. Under Unit selection, find the KRX-3V5 unit by using the drop-down list.
2. You can narrow your search by specifying the Unit type or Unit status.
Unit type Allows you to select any or all hardware connected to the network.
Unit status Allows you to select online, offline, configuration error or all hardware on the network.

3. You can connect to a remote unit that is not located on the network by typing its address in the IP
address of remote unit: field and clicking Find remote unit.
Note: If the Select button is grayed out, the unit is password protected and you must unlock the protection to
make any changes to the settings. Proceed to step 4. If Select is available, click it and the unit will display in
the Selected unit box. Click Refresh unit to see the latest status.
4. If the unit displays with a lock icon in the Unit selection box, it is password protected and you must
enter the password to change any settings on the selected unit.
Password Authentication
You have 2 password authentication options. You can either authenticate a specific unit, by entering its
password, or use Nucleus authentication, allowing you access to all units in the network. To authenticate a
unit, proceed as follows:
1. In the Unit password field, enter the unit password and click Add password.
Note: The password for the unit is provided either on a sticker in the shipping box or on the CD case
2. Upon authentication, the lock icon will no longer be displayed indicating that settings may be changed.
3. Click Select on the lower section of the tab.
4. The unit will display in the Selected unit box. Click Refresh unit to see the latest status.
To use Nucleus authentication, proceed as follows.
1. In the Nucleus admin login field, enter a valid Nucleus IP address and password and click Login.
2. Upon authentication, the lock icon will no longer be displayed on any of the units connected to the
selected Nucleus indicating that settings may be changed.
3. Click Select on the lower section of the tab.
