1. DESCRIPTION
1.1 GENERAL
All Victron Atlas inverters are tested for proper functioning before
leaving the factory. They are wrapped in shock-absorbing styrene foam
and packed in sturdy cardboard boxes for secure
transportation.
The Victron Atlas models are housed in robust aluminium
cabinets (IP21) suitable for floor or wall mounting. The AC
terminals of the external equipment, the DC terminals of the
batteries and the terminals of a remote control panel must be
connected to the underside of the inverter PCB.
1.2 ATLAS INVERTER
The name "ATLAS" designates an inverter. The coding of the Atlas
models is composed as follows:

"24": 24 V, refers to the battery voltage
"850": 850 W, refers to a continuous
output power of 850 Watts.
Victron Energie has made improvements to the Atlas converters since
the last versions. The no-load current has been reduced while efficiency
and power have been increased. These enhancements have been
achieved through the use of ring core transformers and have reduced
the weight of the inverter.
The Atlas inverter converts a direct current of 12, 24 or 48 V into an
alternating current of 230 Vrms ( 5%), 50 Hz.

A full-load efficiency of approx. 92% has been achieved
through the use of high-frequency switching techniques and
FET electronics. With the inverter in "auto" mode, its own
power consumption (no-load consumption) is as stated below.

Almost any electric or electronic device may be connected to
the Atlas inverter.
The Atlas inverters are extremely reliable thanks to numerous built-in
protective devices. Descriptions of these devices are given below.

2. PROTECTIVE DEVICES
2.1 SHORT-CIRCUITS
The inverter's output is protected against short-circuiting. The
short-circuit currents of the different models are stated in the table
below.

In this condition the output voltage approaches 0 V. Once the
short-circuit has been rectified the inverter immediately resumes
normal operation. This eliminates the need to fit a fuse in the inverter's
output circuit.
2.2 MAXIMUM POWER
The inverter delivers a maximum power as stated in the table below.

This level is limited electronically and can be delivered for
approximately one to twenty seconds (depending on the load).

2.3 TEMPERATURE
The temperature of the electronics is measured continuously. The
inverter switches off before the temperature reaches an unacceptably
high level due to short-circuiting, overloading or excessive ambient
temperatures. The red "temperature" LED lights up when this situation
occurs. The inverter restarts automatically once the temperature has
dropped to an acceptable level.
2.3.1 Temperature protection of Atlas
The Victron Atlas inverter has extra temperature protection in addition
to the standard protective device. The expansion consists of a
multi-functional ventilator control.
The electronics in the cabinet are measured continuously to ensure that
the ventilator functions whenever necessary. The ventilator will switch
on (or remain in operation) if:
q the temperature of the electronics or conductors has risen to an
unacceptably high level or if a load greater than 1000 W is
connected to the Atlas ;
q the load has dropped below 1000 W and the temperature has risen;
q the inverter switches off because of an overload or an unacceptably
high temperature. The inverter will cool down more quickly with
the help of the ventilator.
This multi-functional ventilator control helps to accelerate the cooling
of the electronics (including the FETs), connections and wiring.
2.4 OVERLOAD
Overload protection is activated whenever an unacceptably high load is
connected to the inverter.

This takes place in the following way:
q The red "overload" LED flashes if there is an overload.
q The inverter switches off after a few seconds; the red "overload"
LED stops flashing and lights continuously.If the load drops below
the critical limit, the inverter restarts after 30 seconds and full
power can be delivered again.
q If the load returns within a few seconds to a level below the critical
limit, the inverter resumes normal operation and the "overload"
LED goes out.
2.5 LOW INPUT VOLTAGE
The inverter switches off if the input voltage is too low and it restarts
once the input voltage has risen again to an acceptable level.

2.6 HIGH INPUT VOLTAGE
The inverter switches off if the input voltage is too high and it restarts
once the input voltage has dropped again to an acceptable level.

2.7 CONNECTION OF "+" AND "-" TERMINALS
The Atlas 12/1600, 24/850, 24/1600, 48/850 and
48/1600 are NOT protected against reversed
polarity (i.e. "+" connected to "-" and "-"
connected to "+"). Therefore you should follow
the connection instructions given in section 3.3
very carefully. Defects caused by reversed
polarity are not covered by the guarantee.

3. INSTALLATION
3.1 MATERIALS
A screwdriver (No. 1) is needed in order to connect equipment to the
230 V output. The connecting points are located to the left on the front
of the inverter PCB.
3.2 LOCATION
Install the inverter in a dry area with good ventilation.
NOTE: High ambient temperatures will reduce output power,
impair efficiency and shorten working life (see specifications).
There are holes in the bottom and rear of the cabinet for floor or wall
mounting. For the dimensions see section 8.
The Atlas inverters may be fitted to a wall or any horizontal surface.
Ensure ventilation is adequate for the heat generated by the continuous
power. Make sure you will have easy access to the inside of the inverter
after it has been installed.
Keep the distance between the inverter and the battery as short as
possible.
3.3 CONNECTIONS
3.3.1 Earth
Connect the mains earth wire to the earth (PE) of the 230 V terminal
block. This circuit is functional only if the cabinet is connected to
earth. You must therefore connect the inverter to earth. The earth for
vessels is the hull or earth plate; for motor vehicles it is the chassis. See
illustration 1, page 20.
3.3.2 230-Volt AC output
The terminal block is located on the PCB. The 230 V external
equipment must be connected to the inverter by means of a three-wire
cable.

Use a cable with a flexible core. A wire diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 mm is
sufficient (see illustration 1, page 20.). The connection arrangement on
the output terminal block is as follows:
Phase: brown or black wire to: L1
Neutral wire: blue wire to: N
Earth: yellow/green wire to: PE
The inverter will be seriously damaged if
another alternating current (e.g. from a
generator) is connected to the 230 V output.
You can avoid such damage by using a Victron Mains Manager in your
power system.
3.3.3 Battery
The connecting points for the 12 VDC, 24 VDC and 48 VDC inputs are
located to the right on the bottom of the PCB.
The functioning and working life of equipment and batteries depend on
the battery connections being made correctly. Between the battery and
inverter there is a circuit with a low voltage and high current.
Resistance decreases accordingly as cables become shorter and thicker.
The combined resistance of the two cables must not exceed the values
given below.

3.3.3 Protection of battery cables
The battery cables are protected by fuses located in the cabinet of the
inverter (see illustration 1).

Avoid contact resistances by connecting the battery cables only by
means of (new) cable lugs.
3.3.6 Procedure
The inverter is not protected against reversed polarity. The following
procedure should therefore be used:
step 1
Unscrew the four screws of the dripshields and the four
screws on the front of the cabinet.
step 2
Carefully take off the dripshield and slide the front of the
cabinet to one side.
step 3
Satisfy yourself that the four fuses (30 Ampere) have been
disconnected. You will find the fuses with the other
connection material. Connect the battery cables; the "+" (red)
to the left connector and the "-" to the connector on the right.
If the connections have been made properly, the green LED
("right") will light up.

step 4
If the red LED ("wrong") lights up, this means that the
battery cables have been connected incorrectly. In this
event, immediately disconnect the battery cables. Switch
the cables over, then reconnect them.
step 5
When the green LED "right" is lit up, the four fuses of
30 ampere can be fitted. To this end, disconnect the plus
pole of the battery cable. Fit the fuses, then reconnect the
plus pole again.
step 6
Check that the connections have been sufficiently tightened. Use the
M6, open-end spanner.
