General Safety Instructions
Excising bands from gels
1. It is recommended that users wear the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE),
(including wearing clothing that covers the arms and hands).
2. As a minimum, VWR recommends the use of full-face shields that meet the necessary levels
of UV protection. Check that the full-face shields are marked with the ANSIZ87.1 notation,
(ANSI Z87.1-89, Practice for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection, IBR
approved for 29CFR1910.133(b)(1). For Europe full face shields that meet the standard will
be marked with the EN 170:2002 notation (Personal eye-protection - Ultraviolet filters -
Transmittance requirements and Recommended use).
3. It is also recommended that all users of UV should be familiar with the guidelines published
by the various national authorities. In the USA these guidelines are published by OSHA
(www.osha.gov) in their standard 29CFR1910. This provides up- to-date safety information
and guidance. In the UK the HPA (www.hpa.org.uk) issues similar guidance.
4. Refer to DIRECTIVE 2006/25/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE
COUNCIL of 5 April 2006 on the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the
exposure of workers to risks arising from physical agents (19th individual Directive within the
meaning of Article 16(1) of Directive 89/391/EEC) for the European guidelines.
VWR gel Image capture systems
Basic
1. The Basic image capture system consists of a UV transilluminator and a hood with an
attached digital camera. Gels are placed on the UV transilluminator, covered with the hood
and images acquired with the camera.
2. It is imperative that the hood covers the entire surface of the UV transilluminator to prevent
UV exposure to the user.
3. To excise bands when the hood is not in place this can be done by using the appropriate PPE
including wearing clothes that cover the arms and hands.

Smart systems: darkroom with sliding door and Imager/Chemi Premium darkroom
1. When the UV transilluminator is fully enclosed within the darkroom and the door closed, images can
be acquired within VWR Image Capture software with no risk of UV exposure. Within the software
there is a built-in mechanism for the UV cut-off if the door has not been fully closed, therefore,
protecting the user.
Operator Instructions
UV transilluminator (used with VWR®SMART5, Imager2 and Chemi Premium
systems)
1. Note the switch arrangement is as shown in the diagram below. Make sure that the On/Off switch is
in the Off position.
2. Plug the mains input to the unit and supply. DO NOT switch the unit on before checking that safety
precautions have been observed.
3. Now switch the unit on and ensure the switch lamp illuminates and the lamps in the unit illuminate
evenly.
4. Please switch off the unit when not in use.
5. If unit fails to light up, check that the mains display is present, that the On/Off switch is in the On
position. If no fault can be found please contact VWR service department for assistance.
Benchtop Transilluminator (used with VWR®Basic system)
1. Note the switch arrangement is as shown in the diagram below. Make sure that the On/Off switch is
in the Off position.
2. Plug the mains input to the unit and supply. DO NOT switch the unit on before checking that safety
precautions have been observed.

3. Make sure the lid of the transilluminator is in the down position and now switch the unit on and
ensure the switch lamp illuminates and the lamps in the unit illuminate evenly.
4. Please switch off the unit when not in use.
5. If unit fails to light up, check that the mains display is present, that the On/Off switch is in the On
position. If no fault can be found please contact our service department for assistance.
