THE SOUND SOLUTION TO BIRD CONTROL
Bird Gard AVA Instructions
Please read these instructions completely before using your new
Bird Gard AVA Bird Repeller. Unpack and examine the system which
includes one control unit, one vinyl rain cover for the control
Unit, one 3m (10 feet) battery connector cable and six speakers,
each with 31m (100 feet) of connecting cable.
CONTROL UNIT
1 - Set the POWER switch to OFF.
2 - Set the MODE switch to 24 HRS.
3 - Set the TIME OFF switch to SHORT.
4 - Set the VOLUME switch to 1.
Connect the battery power cable to the POWER JACK (12 V DC).
Connect the other end of the battery cable to an operating
12-volt automobile battery. Note: you may also use an optional
12-volt, 500mA adapter, plugging the adapter into a standard
110-volt electrical outlet. (220/240-volt adapters are also
available for operation in other countries.)
EXTENSION SPEAKERS
There are six (6) speakers, each speaker includes 31m (100 feet)
of connecting cable. At the end of each cable is a connecting
jack.
1 - Connect one speaker to each of the two SPEAKER JACKS on the
bottom of the control unit.
2 - Connect a second speaker to the SPEAKER JACK on the bottom
of each of the first two speakers.
3 - Connect a third speaker to the SPEAKER JACK on the bottom of
each of the second two speakers. You should now have an
array that looks like this:

OPERATION
Your Bird Gard AVA is now ready for operation. Aim speakers away
from yourself and others. if you undertake a normal (loud) sound
test of the equipment.
1 - Move the POWER switch to ON. The unit will now go on and off
regularly with a change in sound quality to a warble after the

eighth cycle.
2 - The MODE switch is used for automatic shut off of the system
at dawn or dusk by the photocell. DAY mode will turn the system
on at dawn and off at dusk. NIGHT mode reverses this for night
operation only. 24 HRS mode bypasses the photocell so that the
unit will operate 24 hours a day continuously. The photocell is
the white bulb in the center of the rear panel.
3 - The PHOTOCELL ADJUSTMENT is used to set sensitivity of the
light level entering the photocell under the white bulb. Normal
use is set at the factory; if an adjustment is necessary, use a
small screwdriver to twist the knob in the photocell adjustment
hole to the desired light level. If night operation is desired,
set mode to NIGHT and twist the knob until unit barely turns on
as more of the white bulb is covered. These adjustments can also
be made in the field with the setting made to actual light
conditions.
4 - The TIME OFF circuit is set to alternate between eight
seconds on, eight seconds off, eight seconds on, after which the
TIME OFF setting takes effect. The SHORT time off is eight
seconds, the MEDIUM time off is 40 seconds (this is the normal
setting), and the LONG time off is 104 seconds. The chirp and
warble sounds alternate every 128 seconds regardless of the
setting.
NOTE: The normal time off setting is MEDIUM for a 40-second
interval. As control becomes evident, the time off can be
switched to LONG. If initial installation takes place when birds
are already causing damage, start the system on the SHORT time
off setting, switching to first MEDIUM, then LONG as more control
is gained.
5 - The VOLUME switch should be set at one of the four settings,
based upon the area to be protected. The higher the setting
number, the louder the noises made by the unit and, therefore,
the larger the area that can be protected.
PLEASE REFER TO ACCOMPANYING INFORMATION FOR SETTING UNITS UP IN
FIELDS AND ORCHARDS OF VARYING SIZE, SHAPE AND FOLIAGE DENSITY.
Bird Gard, Bird Gard ABC and Bird Gard AVA are all manufactured
by Weitech, Inc. in Sisters, Oregon, U.S.A. to very high quality

Bird Gard AVA Suggested Installations
Sound Dispersion
The sound pattern produced by Av-Alarm is shown in Figure 1. Each
speaker enclosure contains one speaker which is phased for
optimum sound pressure dispersion. The sound is directional and
pancake shaped.
For adequate bird control, sound intensity must be above ambient
background noise which is 70 decibels or greater. One BG AVA
speaker produces 70 decibels of sound intensity at 150 meters
(500 feet) away from the face of the speaker. Sound intensity to
the sides and rear of each speaker is small.
Placement
BG AVA units are specifically designed to allow the greatest
possible flexibility in positioning and placement. It is
important to project the sounds outward as projecting sounds
inward might tend to trap birds in the area you are trying to
protect. Strong prevailing winds can carry BG AVA sounds.
Position upwind when possible.
Effectiveness is not hampered when units are mounted on the top
or sides of barns, silos and other outbuildings, on fence posts,
or on the back of pickup or flatbed trucks.
Height AdJustments
Elevation is very important for best sound dispersion. In most
cases BG AVA units should be about one meter (three feet) above
the top of crops---whether the crop is low-lying like
strawberries, medium height like grapes or blueberries or high
like a mature apple orchard.
For perimeter protection of smaller orchards under two hectares
(five acres), mounting height may be over the crop or possibly
between ground level and the canopy base if adequate trimming or
open space exists for good sound dispersion.
Place speaker units just over the top of your crop for best sound
dispersion.
