Wfly WFT08 User instructions

S ETTIN G U P TH E W F T 0 8
FOREWARD
This instruction supplement is not inten e to replace the CD-ROM manual that’s supplie with
your ra io. It is inten e to provi e gui ance on setting up this ra io for use with a mo el
submarine, an to act as a supplement to the original manual. Although this gui e will help the user
get the WFT08 configure for use to make the most of the capabilities of the WFT08 it is still up to
the user to rea through the supplie CD-ROM manual.
The setup escribe within is inten e to be somewhat generic, but certain assumptions have been
ma e about the mo el with which it will be use . These instructions have been written aroun a
mo el which has both sternplanes an operable (but non-retracting) bowplanes as may be foun
on many KILO, Seawolf, or Skipjack mo els. Many other combinations are possible an epen ing
on the users’ mo el some of the functions shown here may not be necessary or may nee to be set

up ifferently. Although all possible configurations cannot be shown some alternatives have been
presente .
Because function assignments to specific switches an sticks are also epen ant on correctly
making connections to the receiver (in conjunction with transmitter programming) this gui e also
contains sections which escribe the necessary receiver signal an power connections.
TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING
The or er of steps presente below has been chosen to ensure that a uniform setup results even if
some steps may seem re un ant. Within this section:
1. Buttons are always i entifie in BOLD UPPER CASE text
2. Menu pages are i entifie in PLAIN UPPER CASE text
3. On-screen selections are i entifie in UPPER CASE ITALIC text.
Figure 1 below shows the buttons which make up the user interface on the WFT-08.

be pai to when power cycles are necessary to save changes.):
1) Use the UP button to navigate to 1.) MODEL SELECTING, then press the OK button. If
your mo el type is alrea y set to MODEL1 press the EXIT button to leave the setting
unchange an skip to the next step. Otherwise use the UP button to select MODEL1, then
press OK. Use the RIGHT button to select OK in the confirmation screen an press the OK
button. Press EXIT to leave the MODEL SELECTING screen. You will be prompte to shut
power own to complete this change. Remember to hol own the MENU button while
switching the power back on to return to the SYS SETTING page. (If you wish to setup
multiple boats using this one ra io this is the screen you must navigate to to change the
selecte mo el.)
2) Use the UP/DOWN keys to navigate to 3.) MODEL SETTING, then press OK. If your
mo el setting is alrea y set to ACRO press EXIT button to leave the setting unchange an
skip to the next step. Otherwise press UP to select ACRO, then press OK. Use the RIGHT
button to select OK in the confirmation screen an press the OK button. Press EXIT to leave
the MODEL SELECTING screen. You will be prompte to shut power own to make the
change take effect, but this time you will be allowe to return to the SYS SETTING page. You
must cycle power now or any other changes you make will be lost! Remember to hol own
the MENU button while switching the power back on to return to the SYS SETTING page.

3) Use the UP/DOWN keys to navigate to 6.) MODULATION SETTING, then press OK. If
your mo ulation setting is alrea y set to PPM press EXIT button to leave the setting
unchange an skip to the next step. Otherwise press UP to select PPM, then press OK. Use
the RIGHT button to select OK in the confirmation screen an press the OK button. Press
EXIT to leave the MODEL SELECTING screen. You will be prompte to shut power own
to make the change take effect, but this time you will be allowe to return to the SYS
SETTING page. You must cycle power now or any other changes you make will be lost!
Remember to hol own the MENU button while switching the power back on to return to
the SYS SETTING page.
4) Use the UP/DOWN keys to navigate to 4.) ATL an press OK. Press UP to select OFF an
press OK. Now press EXIT to leave the ATL setting screen.
5) Use the UP/DOWN keys to navigate to 7.) STICK SETTINGS, then press OK. Press the
UP button until the isplay shows MODE 2, then press EXIT to leave the STICK
SETTINGS screen. As a result of this setting the WFT-08 will assign:
oThe left/right movement on the right stick to channel 1 which woul typically be
use to control the mo el’s ru er.
oThe up/ own movement on the right stick to channel 2 which woul typically be
use for either bowplane control (if available) or sternplane control.
oThe up/ own movement on the left stick to channel 3 which is typically use to
control the throttle.
oThe left/right movement on the left stick to channel 4 which is typically use for
ballast control.
6) If esire , you may also navigate to 2.) MODEL NAME, then press OK. (This is useful to
keep track of which mo el is selecte when you will to have multiple mo els set up to run
from this transmitter.) You may i entify each mo el with a unique 8-character name. Use
the RIGHT button to choose the character position to set, then select that position with the
OK button. A small menu win ow will now open up an allow you to choose what
character you want to appear in that space, select the character you wish using the RIGHT
button an press the OK key when one. Press EXIT to leave the MODEL NAME setting
screen.
When you’re one with these steps, switch the transmitter off, then back on again but this time
without hol ing own the MENU button own while you switch the power on. Navigate to the
NORMAL SETTING page by pressing the MENU button after the WFT-08 has complete its power
up. Many of the settings accesse in this menu, such as SERVO REVERSE an END POINT
a justment will be unique to your mo el an it is left up to the mo eler to work out the correct
settings as you’re setting up your boat. Remember where to fin these setup items. For
consistency we recommen that you set 6.) AUXILIARY CHANNELS with the following settings:
CH5 = C, CH6 = VA, CH7 = D. (You may leave CH8 set to – for now, or assign it to a switch or ial of
your choosing.) This setup will use the Snort/LPB river on Switch C, stern-plane trim on ial VA,
an torpe o fire control on Switch D. You must now press the EXIT key until you’re back out at the
main menu for these changes to be save .
Optional Mix
This section escribes a mix that the author has inclu e to provi e more rapi epth control by
mixing control from bow planes to stern planes. Navigate to the NORMAL SETTING page by
pressing the MENU button after the WFT-08 has complete its power up. Use the UP/DOWN keys
to navigate to 17.) ADVANCED, then press OK. Set the master to ELE an slave to FLP. (ELE ->
FLP) On the next line change INH to ON. Leave both LINK an TRIM set to OFF. Change the CTRL
to SwitE an change the POSI to 0. Finally, set the RATE D an U to +100.0% each. This will
result in a programme mix that is engage when Switch E is set to the UP position. When engage
this mix will rive the stern planes in conjunction with the bowplanes

RECEIVER CONNECTIONS
In or er for the programming ma e above to control the correct functions/surfaces on your mo el
a matching set of servo connection must also be ma e at the receiver. Figure 2 shows these
connections for a fully-feature mo el with Snort, bowplanes an torpe oes, while Figure 3 shows
the connections for a minimum-configuration mo el. For clarity the connections to the LiPo
Guar
TM
an ADF2
TM
are show in Figure 2 an 3 with inputs on the left si e an outputs on the right.
Further, only signal connections are shown here, power connections are left to a separate iagram.
FIGURE 2
FIGURE 3
Note that it is the ESC which supplies the power for your receiver, ADF2
TM
, MPC control electronics
an servos. You can test the above connections before sol ering up the power connections (as

shown in the Power Connections section) by unplugging the ESC an replacing it with a 4.8V (4-cell
NiC or NiMh) battery pack. This can be useful for figuring out the appropriate servo reverse an
travel limits for each channel. (Remember those can be accesse in the NORMAL SETTING page
accesse by pressing the MENU button after the transmitter is turne on.)
POWER CONNECTIONS
Before being installe in your SubDriver
TM
the power bus connections must also be ma e as shown
in Figure 4.
Mission
Switch
FIGURE 4
Installation of a fuse is not shown in Figure 4 but is also recommen e . The fuse shoul be installe
as close to your battery as practically possible, may be locate on either the positive or negative
wire, an shoul be installe with a series connection just like the Mission Switch. Since the
function of the fuse is to protect both your battery an your wiring in the event of a catastrophic
electrical failure consi eration shoul be given to the current rating of your power bus wiring since
this is generally less than the burst current limit on most batteries.

TRANSMITTER FUNCTIONS
When configure to the “full feature ” setup (as shown in Figure 2) the controls on your WFT-08
will behave as shown below in Figure 5.
FIGURE 5
If on the other han you followe the “minimum configuration” (as shown in Figure 3) your
transmitter’s functions will be as shown below in Figure 6.
