Description
The WALR 24-2A control unit has been designed for the control of pressure
sensitive mats and safety edges in accordance with EN ISO 13856-1: 2013,
EN ISO 13856-2: 2013, EN 60204-1: 2006 + A1: 2009, EN ISO 13849-1:
2015.
The operation of this module is based on the use of guided contact safety
relays.
Safety precautions
Pressure sensitive safety mats and edges perform a personal protective
function. Incorrect installations or manipulations can cause serious personal
injury.
Pressure sensitive safety mats and safety edges must not be bypassed
(shorting the contacts), moved, removed or otherwise rendered ineffective.
The machine manufacturer or installer is responsible for correct and safe
operation.
The auxiliary exchange output 15-16-17 provides a signal on the status of
the device, therefore it must not be used in any way as a safety output.
The WALR 24-2A is not suitable for operation in the presence of ionizing
and non-ionizing radiation (X-rays, microwaves, lasers, ultraviolet rays) (EN
60204-1: 2006, §4.4.7).
Operation
The WALR 24-2A safety control unit is able to check the status of pressure
sensitive safety mats and edges: the output is activated by pressing and
releasing the START (reset) button only if the two inputs are closed and if
none operator is in the area covered by the carpet (edge). When the safety
device is pressed, the control unit opens the safe outputs 20-21 and 23-24.
The Reset, manual and monitored, is possible only once the device is no
longer pressed as required by EN ISO 13856-1: 2013 (Appendix A) and EN
ISO 13856-2: 2013 (Appendix A).
It is possible to configure the control unit so that the reset takes place
automatically upon release of the mat (edge) by connecting terminals 3-5
together.
The opening of even a single input connection determines a safety situation,
placing the safe outputs in the open state and preventing their re-closing
even after the contact has been re-closed and the START button (reset) is
pressed.
The system composed of WALR24-2A + carpet or pressure sensitive edge
reaches the safety category 3 according to EN ISO 13849-1: 2015 only if
(see connection drawing):
- two relays are used to interrupt the load, each of which connected to an
output of the control unit.
- the relay contacts controlled by the control unit are inserted in the
feedback ring.
Safety is guaranteed by the use of guided contacts, redundancy and the
interconnection scheme of the contacts.
It is the responsibility of the user to choose suitable components for
safety applications, such as guided contact relays.
Installation
The installation must be carried out only by authorized personnel.
The WALR 24-2A control unit must be installed in a suitable area of use
(electrical panel, junction box, at least IP54). The control unit is installed by
attaching it to a standard 35mm DIN omega rail.
Electric connections
Electrical connections must be made only by personnel authorized in
accordance with EN 60204-1: 2006.
All electrical inputs must be isolated from the main power supply or through
a transformer with separate windings in accordance with EN IEC 61558-2-6
with limited output voltage in the event of a defect, or by an equivalent
removable mechanism.
The power supply must be permanently connected using a cable with a
maximum length of 10m; safety mat must be connected to the unit with
cables with a maximum length of 30m.
The relay outputs have a maximum current of 6A; the power supply
connected to these outputs must be protected against overcurrent by
devices suitable for the loads to be protected.
All output contacts must have an adequate protection circuit for inductive
and capacitive loads.
If a standard power supply is used, all inductive and capacitive loads (e.g.
relay contacts) connected to the power supply must be connected to an
appropriate interference suppressor.
Maintenance and checks
The correct operation of the WALR 24-2A control unit must be periodically
checked by the operator and/or by the control circuit of the machine in
which it is used (at the beginning of each shift) by checking the following:
- correct switching
- secure attachment of components
- correct fixing of the connections.
The device monitoring function is performed at each intervention of the
device itself.
In case of failure or wear, the damaged system must be replaced.
Warranty coverage disappears in the following circumstances:
- if the instructions are not followed
- non-compliance with safety regulations
- installation and electrical connection not carried out by authorized
personnel
- failure to carry out functional checks.
Setup
If the control unit does not seem to work when the supply voltage is applied
(the green POWER LED does not light up), the unit must be returned sealed
to the manufacturer. Check if the safety outputs switch (see LED table) by
activating the inputs and pressing the START (reset) button.
