Wehavedesignedyourmodemtoconformtofederalregulations,soyoucanconnectittomosttelephone
lines. However,eachmodem(andeachdevice,suchasa telephone,thatyouconnecttothetelephoneline),
drawspowerfromthetelephoneline.Werefertothispowerdrawasthedevice'sringerequivalencenum-
ber,orREN.TheRENisshownonthelabelpackedwithyourmodem.
Ifyouareusingmorethanonedeviceontheline,addupalltheRENs.Ifthetotalismorethanfive,your
telephonesmightnotring. Inruralareas,a totalRENofthreemightimpairringer operation.
YourmodemcomplieswithFart68ofFCC Rules. Youmust,uponrequest,providetheFCCregistration
numberandtheRENtoyourtelephonecompany.Bothnumbersareshownonthelabelpackedwiththe
modem.

Lightning
Yourmodemhasprotectioncircuits,whichmeetorexceedFCCrequirements,toreducetherisk ofdamage
fromsurgesintelephoneandpowerlinecurrents.However,lightningstrikingnearorontheselinescan
damagethemodem.
Lightningdamageisuncommon.However,ifthisconcernsyouorifyouliveinanareawithfrequent
and/orsevereelectricalstorms,wesuggestthatyouunplugyourelectronicequipmentduringthestorms.
Theloadnumber(LN)assignedtoeachterminaldevicedenotesthepercentageofthetotalloadtobe con-
nectedtoa telephoneloopwhichisusedbythedevicetopreventoverloading.Theterminationona loop
mayconsistofanycombination ofdevices,subjectonlytotherequirementthatthetotaloftheloadnum-
bersofallthedevicesdoesnotexceed100.LoadNumber:20

To begin using your Tandy Sensation computer, all you have to do
is unpack it, make a few connections, and turn it on. Software is
already installed on the hard drive.

Setting Up
To get started, review the Sensation's controls, indicators, and
connectors. Then, follow the instructions for connecting your
mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals, or external options, you
might have purchased.

youneedtoenhancesynthesizersound,usethefollowingprocedureto
selectoneoftheothermodes.

1. FromtheWindowsdesktop,accesstheMaingroup.
2. DoubleclickontheControl Panel icon,thendoubleclickonthe
Drivers icon.A listofoptionsisdisplayed.
3. SelectTandy Wave/MIDI Synthesizer andclickonSetup. A listof
drivermodesisdisplayed.
4. Selectthebase-level,extended-level,orgeneralmodefortheMIDI
driver.
Ifnecessary,repeattheabove stepstoselectthemodethatproducesthe
bestsynthesizersound.

ConnectingthePowerCord
PlugtheACpowercordIntothebackofthecomputerandthenintoan
easilyaccessibleACwalloutlet, orusea grounded powerstripwith
multipleoutlets.Thegroundedpowerstripshouldbepluggedintoan
easilyaccessibleACwalloutlet,asshown:

Power-On/Power-Off
Nowyou'reready to beginusingyourSensationcomputer.Turnonthe
computerbeforeturningonperipheraldevices,such asa printer.Press
thepowerbuttonontheright side of thecomputertoturn it on. The
powerindicatorlightswhenthecomputerison.

UsingtheDisketteDrive
Yourcomputercanreadandwriteeither3Vi-inch,720KB(standard-
capacity)diskettesorthe3V£-inch, 1.44MB (high-capacity)diskettesfor
whichitsdiskettedriveisspecificallydesigned.
AlldiskettesmustbeformattedbyMS-DOSbeforeinformationcanbe
storedonthem.Standard-capacitydiskettesmustbeformattedwithspe-
cialformattingparametersthatindicatethediskettecapacity.Referto
yourMS-DOSdocumentationforinformationontheseparameters.
Toprotectinformationondiskettesfromaccidentalerasure,youcan
writeprotectyourdiskettes.Thewrite-protecttabisa smallplastictab
intheupperleftcorner onthebackofthediskette.Thediskettecanbe
writtentoaslongasthistabispositionedsothatthetabcoversthe
smallsquareopening.Towriteprotectthediskette,useyourfingernail
ora pointedobjecttoslidethetabsothattheopeningisvisible.
Inserta disketteintothediskettedriveasshown:

Checkthatthediskettedriveactivityindicatorlightisoffbeforeyoure-
movea diskettefromthediskettedrive.Toremovea diskette,pressthe

Compactdiscsshouldbecaredforinmuchthesamewayasrecords,al-
thoughtheyarenotaseasilydamaged.AlwaysstoreyourCDsinthe
originalcase.
MaintainingCompactDiscs
TomaintainyourCDs:
#Avoidexposingyourdiscstodirectsunlightandextremesintem-
peratureandhumidity.
•Donotusehouseholdcleanerstocleanyourdiscs.Usea soft,dry,
lint-freecloth.Beginatthecenterofthediscandgentlywipeout-
ward,ina seriesofstraightlines.
•Holddiscsbytheedges.Donottouchtheflatsurfacesofthedisc.
