OmnicalTM 2010
Voltage calibrator

OmnicalTM 2010 Voltage Calibrator
WORLD PRECISION INSTRUMENTS 1
Introduction
Omnical™ 2010 is a battery operated source of DC voltage and square waves
electrically isolated from ground. A digital panel voltmeter accurately indicates the
amplitude of the instrument's output voltage. By applying an external positive
command voltage, the user may also obtain a gated DC voltage or trigger a single
pulse. Two amplitude ranges, 10 volts and 100 millivolts are available.
Specifications

Operation
DC Voltage
Set the MODE switch to DC and switch the Power switch to ON. Depending on
whether volts (V) or millivolts (mV) has been toggled on the Range switch, the
digital voltmeter will indicate volts or millivolts respectively.
Rotate both the COARSE and the FINE amplitude controls. Note that with no
external load resistance, meter readings may change slowly in the V range.
Rotation of both COARSE and FINE amplitude controls to their minimum
(counterclockwise) position should result in a zero reading on the panel voltmeter. If
necessary, adjust the panel ZERO adjustment screw with a small screwdriver to
restore the meter zero reading.
When the NORMAL/OFF/INVERT switch is in the NORMAL position, the OUTPUT
banana jack designated + is positive with respect to its mate. INVERT reverses the
polarity of the output. In the OFF position, the OUTPUT terminals are disconnected
from the instrument.
Note particularly that the output resistance of the instrument in the V range is
approximately 50 ohms and 100 ohms in the mV range. If the instrument is
connected to load resistances less than 100 times greater than the values cited
above, there will be a one percent or greater discrepancy between the reading of
the digital meter and the actual voltage at the load.
Square Waves
To generate square waves, switch the MODE switch to FREE RUN. Square wave
amplitude and polarity are indicated and selected just as for DC voltages. Square
wave frequency can be varied with the PERIOD knob from approximately 20 Hz to
1 KHz (50 ms to 1 ms).
External Command
An internal photon coupler allows Omnical™ 2010 to be controlled by external
ground referred logic level commands while its output remains completely
disconnected from earth ground. A voltage command of +5 volts will trigger or gate
the instrument. In GATED mode, the output DC voltage will remain as long as the
external command is maintained. Note the small timing delays cited in the
specifications.
A single pulse, activated by an external +5 volt command can be obtained by
switching to the MONO mode. The PERIOD control will vary the pulse width from
approximately 0.5 to 25 milliseconds. Polarity and amplitude adjustments are the
same as for DC voltage.

Batteries
Omnical™ 2010 is powered by two 9 volt alkaline batteries. Batteries should be
replaced every six months or as needed. Battery fatigue is shown by the LO BAT
indicator on the panel meter face or when the user has difficulty in obtaining full
rated voltage with the COARSE and FINE amplitude controls set to maximum. To
replace the batteries, switch OFF the Power switch. On the rear of the instrument
slide off the battery compartment cover in the OPEN direction.
CAUTION: be very careful to assure that the battery pins mate
correctly when inserting new batteries. Improper insertion may
result in damage to the batteries and/or the instrument.
Battery life will be extended if you remember to switch the instrument power OFF
when not in use.
Shipping Information
The Omnical™ 2010 is packaged and shipped in a foam-packed container. Upon
receipt of the the instrument, make a thorough inspection for proper contents and
possible shipping damage. If reshipment is necessary, use the original container. If
the original container is not available, use any suitable substitute that is rigid and of
adequate size. Wrap the instrument in paper and surround with at least 100 mm
(four inches) of shock absorbing material.
Tilt Bail
The instrument is provided with a tilt bail. If use is desired, lift the bottom edge of
the bail out, and snap into place.
Cleaning
The exterior of this instrument may be cleaned periodically to remove dust, grease
and other contamination. There is no need to clean the inside. Use a soft cloth
dampened with a mild solution of detergent and water. Do not use abrasive
cleaners.
CAUTION: Do not use alcohol, aromatic hydrocarbons or
chlorinated solvents for cleaning. They may adversely react with
plastic materials used to manufacture the instrument.
