Overview
Attention
This guide is intended to be followed in a linear fashion from the first chapter to the last
chapter.
The first section of this guide details a web threading process in six steps, which starts
at the right side of the CiPress™(the Infeed Module) and ends at the left side of the
CiPress™(the Outfeed Module).

Overview

Preparing the Infeed
Module for Threading
This section describes the web threading process for the highlighted section of the web
path.
1. Prepare the unwinder and any other external devices at the start of the Infeed Module.
Correctly align the physical position of the unwinder, turnbars, and finishing equipment
with the CiPress™. The unwinder should be powered on in the ready state, able to
feed paper as it is pulled through the web path.
2. Open the Infeed Module Front Door.

The Primary CiPress™is also known as the Upstream CiPress™in a Tandem or Duplex
configuration. When mentioned, The Secondary

CiPress™is also known as the Downstream CiPress™in a Tandem or Duplex
configuration.
3. Start with the edge of the web at the unwinder and cut a 45 degree angle across two
thirds of the sheet, leaving a straight edge about 76 mm (3 inches).
4. Provide paper slack by manually pulling the web about 3 to 5 meters (5 to 10 feet)
off of the unwinder. You need to perform this step throughout the web threading
process.
5. Place the web against the Web Positioning Label.

6. Open the Infeed Module end cover located at the right side of the Infeed Module to
access the Web Edge Guide.
7. To identify which metal tab to use on the Web Edge Guide for aligning and inserting
the web, refer to the label, also located on the Infeed Module, and perform the
following steps.

a) Begin at the right side of the guide and align the web edge at either the pinfeed
or pinless paper icon. To determine the correct metal tab to use for aligning the

web on the guide, refer to the appropriate CiPress™icon on either lower corner of
the label.
Left front metal tab (gold color from label) used to align the web for the
Secondary CiPress™.

Right front metal tab (blue color from label) used to align the web for the
Secondary CiPress™.

b) If the left edge of the web ends at the blue area on the label, use the metal tab
that corresponds with the blue arrow. If the web edge ends at the gold area, use
the metal tab that corresponds with the gold arrow.
8. Ensure that the Front and Rear Web Edge Guides are located against their respective
sides of the Infeed Module.
a) Loosen the thumb screw.
b) Move the Web Guide to the appropriate position.
c) Tighten the thumb screw.

9. Adjust the orientation of the Web Tension Adjuster by pulling up the pin and rotating
the Adjuster depending on the weight of the media being used.

For media ≤90 gsm, rotate the Adjuster counter-clockwise to increase tension on
the web. The default setting is to set the Adjuster at the 0 degree position so that
•
the pin is facing upward. For very light weight media, set the Adjuster slightly past
this position.
•For media ≥90 gsm, rotate the Adjuster clockwise to decrease the tension on the
web. The default setting is to set the Adjuster at the 90 degree position so that
the pin is facing outward and is in the horizontal position. For very heavy weight
media, set the Adjuster slightly past 90 degrees.

10. Perform one of the following steps depending on if threading the Primary Printer or
the Secondary Printer.
•For Primary Printer: Lock the Infeed Idler Roller into position so that it does not
rotate. Align the notch in the Infeed Idler Roller with the pin and push in the pin.

•For Secondary Printer: Allow the Infeed Idler Roller to rotate freely. Pull out the
pin.

11. Using a clean lint-free cloth and anti-static fluid, clean the upper and lower surfaces
of both the Front and Rear Web Edge Sensors.

12. Move the Front and Rear Web Edge Sensors out of the way.
a) Turn the Front Web Edge Sensor Adjustment Knob counterclockwise until it stops.
b) Loosen the thumbscrew by turning it counterclockwise.
c) Rotate the Rear Web Edge Sensor Adjustment Knob if necessary so that the Brass
Clamp is facing upward.
d) Pull up to release and open the Brass Clamp.
e) Grasp the Front Web Edge Sensor and gently pull the Sensor towards you so that
it is as far forward as possible.
f) Tighten the thumbscrew by turning it clockwise.

g) Rotate the Rear Web Edge Sensor Adjustment Knob until the end of the shaft is
flush with the mounting block at the rear of the cavity.
h) Grasp the Rear Web Edge Sensor Knob and gently push it into the Printer until it
stops.
i) Close the Brass Clamp.

Threading the Web
Registration Module
This section describes the web threading process for the highlighted part of the web
path.
1. While leaving a 5 mm (.2 inch) space between each Web Edge Guide and the edge
of the web, begin threading the web through the Web Tension Adjuster by placing
the web over the top of the Infeed Idler Roller and underneath the Grooved Web
Tensioning Bar. Follow the label on the CiPress™.

2. Press the Emergency Stop button on the Infeed Module of the CiPress™until it clicks.
The CiPress™is now offline.
3. On the Web Registration Module Control Panel, select .
4. Unlock the Infeed Module S-wrap Roll Nip Release Lever.

5. Thread the web through the S-wrap. Refer to the web path label on the CiPress™
panel for guidance.
Note
Always check that the web is not creeping forward (towards you) along the web path
and rubbing against any of the front components of the machine. Misalignment of
the web could cause the web to continually rub against the front components of the
web path and damage the web.

6. Thread the web over the upper roller and through the registration rollers. Refer to
the label on the CiPress™.
7. Thread the web through the registration guide and over the registration exit roller.
Ensure that the web passes through the appropriate web edge sensor.
•For the Primary CiPress™: Rear Web Edge Sensor.
•For the Secondary CiPress™: Front Web Edge Sensor.
