WARNING: Be sure to reference the Safety Warnings and Precautions section. Failure to exercise care while using
this product and to comply with the safety guidelines could result in product malfunction, excessive heat, fire, damage
to your products not covered under warranty, property damage, and/or personal injury.
Battery Charging
All batteries are shipped at less than 50% full capacity, as the battery ages less when stored in this state. Charging the
battery is not required before first use.
A USB cable is included with the ProDSS for the purposes of charging the instrument battery and connecting the instrument
to a PC. The battery can be charged using a computer, the AC adapter included with the instrument, or from an external,
portable USB battery pack (sold separately).
To charge the ProDSS, plug the USB connector into the AC power adapter, USB port on a computer, or an external USB
battery pack and plug the micro USB connector into the ProDSS. Always charge the battery in an open area away from
flammable materials, liquids and surfaces.
The ProDSS will charge faster when plugged into an AC outlet for charging rather than a PC’s USB port. For the instrument
to recognize that it is using AC power, you must start charging the ProDSS while on. After the instrument recognizes it is
being charged, it can be turned off to finish charging.
When using the AC adapter, it takes approximately 14 hours to charge the ProDSS battery when the instrument is turned
off during the charge. The amount of time required to completely charge the battery when the ProDSS is on during
charging is approximately 9 hours.
Battery Life
Battery life depends on use, enabled parameters, LCD brightness, GPS use, sampling mode, and battery age. As with all
lithium-ion batteries, battery life will decline over time and use - this decay is typical and should be expected.
Battery life may also depend on the battery charging practices used. For maximum battery life, keep the battery 40% to
80% charged. Also, a larger discharge (e.g. to 50%) is better than a small discharge (e.g. to 90%) between recharges.
A new ProDSS battery is expected to last for the following durations (25°C, auto sampling, GPS on, keypad backlight off):
ProDSS instrument only - 48 hours
ProDSS with fully loaded 4 port cable assembly and 25% (Default) LCD brightness - 20 hours
ProDSS with fully loaded 4 port cable assembly and 100% LCD brightness - 14 hours
The ProDSS handheld instrument uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack as a power source. The battery comes
pre-installed in a ProDSS and does not need to be replaced until the battery charge capacity is deemed unacceptable
by the user.

unapproved chargers can result in battery failure and potentially serious injury to the user.
CAUTION: The temperature range over which the battery can be charged is 2°C to 45°C (35.6°F to 113°F). Charging
the battery at temperatures outside of this range may cause the battery to become hot or to break. Charging the battery
outside of this temperature range may also harm the performance of the battery or reduce the battery’s life expectancy.
CAUTION: The ambient temperature range over which the battery can be discharged is -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).
Use of the battery outside of this temperature range may damage the performance of the battery or may reduce its life
expectancy. Performance will suffer in cold temperature (0°C / 32°F) and perform best at warm temperature (37°C /
98.6°F).

Battery Storage and Disposal
Lithium-ion batteries will lose their charge capacity over time, especially when stored for long periods between use.
For long term storage, remove the battery pack from the instrument. If possible, store in a non-conductive/fireproof
container and/or in a cold environment (>0°C / >32°F). If stored cold, allow the battery to return to room temperature
before charging. Also, store the pack with a partial charge (~50%) to limit loss of charge capacity.
1. When the battery is worn out, insulate the terminals with adhesive tape or similar materials before disposal.
2. Dispose of batteries in the manner required by your city, county, state or country. For details on recycling lithium-
ion batteries, please contact a government recycling agency, your waste-disposal service, or visit reputable online
recycling sources such as www.batteryrecycling.com.
This product must not be disposed of with other waste. Instead, it is the user’s responsibility to dispose of their
waste equipment by handing it over to a designated collection point for the recycling of waste electrical and electronic
equipment. The separate collection and recycling of your waste equipment at the time of disposal will help to conserve
natural resources and ensure that it is recycled in a manner that protects human health and the environment.
For more information about where you can drop off your waste equipment for recycling, please contact your local city
office, or your local waste disposal service. DO NOT ship batteries to YSI or a YSI authorized service center unless
instructed to do otherwise.
• DO NOT attach the batteries directly to a power supply plug or directly to a car’s cigarette lighter.
• DO NOT place the batteries in or near fire, or into direct extended exposure to sunlight. When
the battery becomes hot, the built-in safety equipment is activated; preventing the battery from
charging further, and heating the battery can destroy the safety equipment and cause
additional heating, breaking, or ignition.
• DO NOT leave the battery pack unattended while charging.
