OxiTop®Box Overview
ba31112e04 03/2019 5
1 Overview
The OxiTop®Box serves to regulate the temperature of samples on a stirring
platform, for the determination of the biochemical oxygen demand according to
the self-monitoring procedure. The OxiTop®Box is especially suitable for the
inductive stirring platforms IS 6, IS 12 and IS 602, and to incubate samples
according to the BOD DIN procedure.
The thermostat box is heat insulated and made of stainless steel 1.4301,
including the interior. The deep-drawn plastic cover hood can easily be opened
and grants simple and comfortable loading. Inside the box, beside the cold
evaporator with condensate tub, there is a storing area for 6 methylene blue
samples.
A crossflow blower provides permanent air circulation. The temperature is con-
trolled by a precision control system which activates the heating or refrigerating
system. The refrigeration cycle is hermetically sealed and contains evaporator,
condenser and an automatically ventilated refrigerating unit. The automatic
defroster provides constant refrigerating power.
The power supply of the used stirring platform is provided via the socket inside
the box.
To determine BODn and oxygen consumption, a constant tempera-
ture of 20°C ± 1 °C is required.

2 Safety
2.1 Safety information
2.1.1 Safety information in the operating manual
This operating manual provides important information on the safe operation of
the instrument. Read this operating manual thoroughly and make yourself
familiar with the instrument before putting it into operation or working with it.
The operating manual must be kept in the vicinity of the instrument so you can
always find the information you need.
Important safety instructions are highlighted in this operating manual. They are
indicated by the warning symbol (triangle) in the left column. The signal word
(e.g. "CAUTION") indicates the danger level:
NOTE
indicates a possibly dangerous situation where goods might be damaged
if the actions mentioned are not taken.
2.1.2 Safety signs on the instrument
Note all labels, information signs and safety symbols on the instrument and in
the battery compartment. A warning symbol (triangle) without text refers to
safety information in this operating manual.
2.1.3 Further documents providing safety information
The following documents provide additional information, which you should
observe for your safety when working with the measuring system:
• Operating manuals of accessories
WARNING
indicates a possibly dangerous situation that can lead to seri-
ous (irreversible) injury or death if the safety instruction is not
followed.
CAUTION
indicates a possibly dangerous situation that can lead to
slight (reversible) injury if the safety instruction is not fol-
lowed.

2.2 Safe operation
2.2.1 Authorized use
Authorized use of the OxiTop®Box is exclusively the temperature regulation of
samples on a stirring platform.
Only the operation and running of the instrument according to the instructions
and technical specifications given in this operating manual is authorized (see
section 6 TECHNICAL DATA, page 11).
Any other use is considered unauthorized.
2.2.2 Requirements for safe operation
Note the following points for safe operation:
• The instrument may only be operated according to the authorized use spec-
ified above.
• The instrument may only be supplied with power by the energy sources
mentioned in this operating manual.
• The instrument may only be operated under the environmental conditions
mentioned in this operating manual.
• The instrument may only be opened if this is explicitly described in this oper-
ating manual (example: Inserting the batteries).
2.2.3 Unauthorized use
The instrument must not be put into operation if:
• it is visibly damaged (e.g. after being transported)
• it was stored under adverse conditions for a lengthy period of time (storing
conditions, see section 6 TECHNICAL DATA, page 11).

Operating manual
3.2 Power supply
The OxiTop®Box is supplied with power via the power pack included in the
scope of delivery.
3.3 Initial commissioning
3.4 Setting the temperature
The instrument is set to 20 °C ± 1 °C.
For a different incubation temperature change the desired value at the tem-
perature regulator.
1 Position the instrument with sufficient space for ventilation.
2 Connect the cold device plug to the instrument.
3 Connect the power plug to a power outlet.
4 Switch on the instrument (switch on the rear side)
5 For preparation of the sample bottles and execution of the measure-
ment refer to the operating manual of the OxiTop®measuring heads.
1 Lift off the closing cap (interior).
2 Modify the desired value with the aid of the special wrench (scope of
delivery).
3 After a sufficient delay for the temperature adjustment of the sample
liquid in the bottles, check the new temperature value (e.g. 25 °C) and
correct it as necessary.
4 Close the closing cap (interior) again.

OxiTop®Box Maintenance, cleaning, disposal
ba31112e04 03/2019 9
4 Maintenance, cleaning, disposal
4.1 Maintenance
All electrical and mechanical parts are suitable for permanent operation and do
not require any maintenance work.
4.2 Cleaning
Check the cooling air condenser at the back of the instrument for contamination
regularly.
If the instrument is positioned in a rather dirty place, clean the cooling air con-
denser at the back of the instrument at least once a year.
4.3 Packing
The OxiTop®Box is shipped in a protective transport packing.
We recommend: Keep the packing material.
The original packing protects the instrument against damage during transport.
4.4 Disposal
At the end of its operational lifetime, the instrument must be returned to the dis-
posal or return system statutory in your country. If you have any questions,
please contact your supplier.
5 What to do if...
Note
All repair work (at the cooling system, or exchanging the refrigerating units) is
carried out exclusively by service personnel.
Instrument does not
work
1 Before doing any repair work disconnect the power plug.
2 Open the cover at the back of the instrument with a crosstip screw
driver. Thus all electrical connections according to the wiring scheme
are accessible.
3 Do the troubleshooting.
Cause Remedy
– No power supply – Check the power line
– Check the instrument fuse
