prior to installing or operating this heater.

• Carefully examine the heater and the power
cord for signs of damage or defect. DO

If the heater appears to be damaged or
defective, contact Zoo Med’s customer
service department for replacement within
the speci ed period according to the terms

• Carefully inspect the power cord insulation
and plug to be sure that there are no cuts,
burns, or exposed wires. DO NOT splice,
repair, or modify the power cord in any way.
Inspect the power cord, plug, and heater
periodically for damage.
• This heater gets hot when plugged in. To
avoid injury, DO NOT touch the heater when
it is plugged in. Allow the heater to com-
pletely cool before handling it or performing
aquarium maintenance.
• Caution must be taken when using electrical
appliances near water. To reduce the risk
of electric shock, be sure that the heater
is unplugged during any of the following
situations:
-Unplug when the heater is dry and is not
submerged in water.
-Unplug when installing the heater in your
 sh bowl or tank.

the electrical connection.
• This unit has no user-serviceable parts. Do
not attempt to repair this product yourself.
Return to Zoo Med for inspection and repair.
DRIP LOOP:
This heater must be plugged into a grounded
GFCI (Ground Fault Interrupted Circuit) receptacle
with a “drip loop” (see Figure 1). The drip loop
will prevent water from running along the power
cord and getting the plug or wall receptacle wet.
To create a drip loop, be sure that a portion of
the power cord is lower than the level of the
wall receptacle as shown in Figure 1. If you are
unsure about the electrical supply and connec-
tion, contact a quali ed licensed electrician. If for
any reason the plug or wall receptacle gets wet,
do not grasp or unplug the power cord until after
the power has been switched off at the main fuse
or circuit breaker.

DO NOT allow this heater to operate dry. Special
care should be taken to be sure that the heater
remains submerged in water when in use.
If the heater comes out of the water, unplug
immediately and allow to completely cool before
handling.
HEATER INSTALLATION:
•Note: This heater will raise the temperature
in your sh bowl or tank by approximately
5 to 10°F (2.7 to 5.4°C) over ambient room
temperature. An aquarium thermometer
must be used to be sure that the tempera-
ture is appropriate for your Betta or other
aquarium sh. In the event that the ambient
room temperature is warmer than the de-
sired temperature in your aquarium, be sure
to unplug the heater to prevent overheating
the water and your aquarium sh. Do not
place your bowl or tank near a window, in
direct sunlight, or any other heat source to
prevent overheating your aquarium.
CAUTION:
1.Do not plug in the heater until after complet-
ing the following steps.
2.Place the heater near the floor of the bowl or
tank as shown in Figure 2.
3.Before lling the bowl or tank with water,
add aquarium gravel or sand to the floor of
your aquarium.
4.The heater is to be placed under a thin layer
of sand or gravel (up to 1 inch or 2.54 cm).
5.Secure the heater’s power cord to the side
wall of the bowl or tank with the clip and
suction cup provided.
6.Fill the bowl or tank with dechlorinated water
to the desired level. We recommend using
Zoo Med’s Betta H2O Conditioner.
7.Plug in the heater and allow the water
temperature to stabilize. This may take
several hours depending on the initial
water temperature and the ambient room
temperature.
8.Check the temperature shown on the
aquarium thermometer to be sure that the
temperature is correct for your Betta or
other aquarium sh. Bettas do best when
the temperature is between 76 and 80°F
(24.5 to 26.7°C). Temperatures required for
spawning are slightly higher at 80 to 85°F
(26.7 to 29.4°C).
If the temperature shown on your aquarium
thermometer exceeds the desired tempera-
ture in your bowl or tank, unplug the heater
to avoid overheating your sh.
