ZyXELwarrantstotheoriginalend user(purchaser) thatthisproductisfree fromanydefectsin
materialsorworkmanshipforaperiodofup totwo(2)yearsfromthedateofpurchase.During
thewarrantyperiod,and uponproofofpurchase,shouldtheproducthaveindicationsoffailure
duetofaultyworkmanshipand/ormaterials,ZyXELwill,atitsoption,repairorreplacethe
defectiveproductsorcomponentswithoutchargeforeitherpartsorlabor,and towhateverextent
it shall deemnecessarytorestoretheproductorcomponentstoproperoperatingcondition.Any
replacementwill consistofaneworremanufacturedfunctionallyequivalentproductofequal
value,and will besolelyattheoptionofZyXEL.Thiswarrantyshall notapplyiftheproductis

impliedwarrantyofmerchantabilityorfitness foraparticularuseorpurpose.ZyXELshall inno
eventbeheldliableforindirectorconsequentialdamagesofanykind orcharactertothe

usedtoensurecompliancewithFCC Part15,and it istheresponsibilityoftheusertoprovideand
useshieldedRS-232 cables.

TheRENisusefultodeterminethequantityofthedevicesyoumayconnecttoyourtelephone
lineand still haveall ofthosedevicesringwhenyourtelephonenumberiscalled.Inmost,butnot
all areas,thesumoftheRENsofall devicesconnectedtoonelineshouldnotexceedfive(5.0).
Tobecertainofthenumberofdevicesyoumayconnecttoyourline,asdeterminedbythetotal
RENs,youshouldcontactyourlocaltelephonecompanytodeterminethemaximumRENfor
yourcallingarea.
Ifyourequipmentcausesharmtothetelephonenetwork,thetelephonecompanymaydiscontinue
yourservicetemporarily.Ifpossible,theywill notifyyouinadvance.Butifadvancenoticeisn’t
practical,youwill benotifiedassoonaspossible.Youwill beinformedofyourrighttofilea
complaintwiththeFCC.
Yourtelephonecompanymaymakechangesinitsfacilities,equipment,operations,or
proceduresthatcouldaffecttheproperfunctioningofyourequipment.Iftheydo,youwill be
notifiedinadvancetogiveyouanopportunitytomaintainuninterruptedtelephoneservice.

Beforeyouproceed,checkall itemsyoureceivedwithyourmodemagainstthislistto

HardwareOverview
TheCometisanintelligenthigh-speedfax/modem.Themodemcanbeusedasbotha
send/receivefaxmachineandadatamodem.Whenconnectingtoanothermodem/fax,
themodemautomaticallynegotiatesthefastestspeedpossible.ThePCCard
FAX/MODEMisdesignedtoworkwithmostofthepopularfax/modem
communicationsoftwarepackages.Somesoftwarepackageswill controlandconfigure
thefax/modemforyouautomatically,however,theyareusuallyonlyusefultothose
whoneedthemodemtoperformspecialtasks.ATcommandscanalsobeusedto
controlthefax/modemmanually.

Thischapterdescribeshowtoinstall yourComethardware.Installationproceduresalso
coverWindows3.x,Windows95,WindowsNT4.0,andDOSoperatingsystems.
Hardware
YoucaninsertyourCometwithyourcomputerturnedonoroff.Followthestepsbelow
tocompletethehardwareinstallation:
1.Holdthecardlabelup andinsertandattachthemodemcabletotheconnector
displayingthemodemicon.
2.InsertthecardintothePCMCIATypeII orTypeIII slotonyourcomputer.
3.Plug theRJ-11 cableintothetelephonelinejackandintothemodemconnector.
Windows95
Noanydisketteneededinthisinstallation.
1.ChooseSelectfromalistofalternatedriversintheNewHardwareFounddialog
box.
2.SelectStandardModemTypesandStandard33600 bpsModem.
3.ClicktheOK button.
4.ConnecttheFAX/MODEMinterface cableandhookup theRJ-11 plug tothe
telephonelineoutlet.
5.RestartWindows95.

hardware manufacturer,andclickOK.
4.EnterthepathA:\,andinserttheFax/ModemcardINFfiledisk.Windows95 will
install themodemINFfileautomatically.

telephonelineoutlet.

COMportandIRQ.
6.Install theFAX/MODEMapplicationprogramthatcamewiththefax/modem
card.ConnecttheFAX/MODEMinterface cableandhookup theRJ-11 plug tothe
telephonelineoutlet.
