TheCometisanintelligenthigh-speedfax/modem.Themodemcanbeusedasbotha
send/receivefaxmachineandadatamodem.Whenconnectingtoanothermodem/fax,
themodemautomaticallynegotiatesthefastestspeedpossible.ThePCCard
FAX/MODEMisdesignedtoworkwithmostofthepopularfax/modem
communicationsoftwarepackages.Somesoftwarepackageswill controlandconfigure
thefax/modemforyouautomatically,however,theyareusuallyonlyusefultothose

Thischaptercoversthebasiccommandsandtechniquesinvolvedinmodemoperation.
Inmanycases,thisistheonlyinformationyouwill needinordertogetyourCometup
andrunningwithcommunicationsoftware,andtostartmakingconnectionswithyour
Comet.
Understanding ATCommands
TheCometcommunicatesasynchronouslywithcomputersusingATcommands.AT
commandsareusedtoconfigureandcontroltheComet.Commandsareusuallysentto
themodembywayofcommunicationsoftware,butcanalsobeenteredmanuallywith
thecomputerkeyboard.
CommandstatementsmustbewritteninaspecificforminorderfortheCometto
recognizethem.AcommandstatementalwaysbeginswiththelettersATorat.Itis
thenfollowedbyoneormorecommandsandthe<Enter>key.
ATcommandscanonlybeissuedwhentheCometisin“commandmode”or“off-line.”
Once theComethasestablishedaconnectionwithanothermodemit issaidtobe
“on-line”orin“datamode.”Inthismode,thecharacterssenttotheCometbyyour
computeraretransmittedtotheremotemodemratherthanbeinginterpretedbythe
Cometascommands.
UsingtheWindows95 Hyper TerminalProgram
InordertoissueanATcommandstatement,youfirstneedtorunacommunication
programsuchastheMicrosoftWindows“HyperTerminal”program.Thisprogram
providesasimplemethodtomanuallyenterATcommandssoyoucandosuchthingsas
“customize”thesettingsofyourComet,orstorephonenumbersyouwill commonly
connectto.
Once theCometisconnectedtoyourcomputer’sserialportandtelephoneline,Open
theWindows95 “Accessories”programgroup,andopentheHyperTerminalProgram.
Theprogramwill promptyouforanameandIcontouseforyournewconnection.Type
thenameTestConnectionandpress <Enter>.
Next,youwill bepromptedforcountryinformation,areacode,andphonenumber,and
thedevice usedtomaketheconnection.Forthistestpurpose,donotenteraphone
number;simplychoosetheCOMportyourCometisconnectedtofromthe“Connect
Using”list.Click“OK”whenfinished.
ThenextwindowsetstheCOMportsettings.ThesettingsusedfortheCometshouldbe
asfollows:

TheCometprocessescommandsfromlefttoright.TheATcommandthatappearsto
therightmightover-writethecommandtotheleftiftheyaretryingtoaccomplishtasks
orsetmodesthatcannotcoexist.
•Ifyousee duplicatedcharactersforeachoneyoutype,yourCometandsoftware
bothhavetheir“echo”featureturned.TheCometcommandechostateisswitched
off usingATE0andonusingATE1(default).Toeliminatethedoublecharacters,
turnoff thesoftware’scommandechoratherthanusingtheATE0command.If
yousee nocharactersinyourterminalwindowwhenyoutype,themodem’secho
settingisprobablysettooff.Inthiscase,issuetheATE1command.

Non-VolatileMemory
TheComethasmemorysetasideforstoringuserinformationsuchasfrequentlyused
phonenumbersanddefault commandsettings.Thelatterisparticularlyusefulwhen
youuseyourmodemtocall avarietyofdifferentlocationsthatrequiredifferent
settings.Forthisreason,theCometprovidesanumberofuser“Profiles”thatcanbe
accessedthroughsimpleATcommands.Thissectioncoversthetopicsofstoringphone
numbers,andsavingdefault settingsinthepower-onprofile.
