Install the modem driver
If you are running Windows 95 and you are

icon. When the “Modems Properties” screen appears,

Windows 95 or 98, click the tab,and then
click the COM port next to the description of your
modem. Write down the COM port to which your
modem is assigned (for example, ) in the
box below.

Write the modem’s serial number in the box below.
The serial number is located on the white bar code
sticker on the modem and on the modem’s box.
CAUTION: To avoid risk of electrical shock, make
sureyourcomputer andallperipheraldevices areturned
off and unplugged from electrical outlets.
Shut down Windows. Turn off your computer and all
peripherals. Unplug your computer, and remove the
computer’s cover.
Unscrew and remove the expansion slot cover at the
backof an emptyPCI expansion slot.The slotcoveris
located on the back of the computer and covers an
opening on the computer case. The opening lines up
with the slot (inside the computer), which is usually
white plastic lined with metal.

Troubleshooting
Windows®95UsersReadThisFirst!
1. ClickWindowsStart, pointtoSettings ,and click
Control Panel.
2. Double-clicktheModems icon.
3. ClicktheDiagnostics tab.
4. Click the COM port that your modem is assigned to so that
itishighlighted.
Ifyou do not see your modem onthis screen, you need to exit
the “Modems Properties”screen by clicking Cancel.Click
Start,ShutDown ,selecttheShutdownthecomputer? option,
and then click Yes.When your computerhas shut down, turn it
offandunplugitfromitspoweroutlet.Uninstallthe modem from
the computer. If it is an external, unplug its serial cable from the
computer’sCOMport.Ifitis an internal,unplugthephoneline
andyourtelephonefromthemodem’sPHONEandTELCO
jacks.Thenremovethecomputer’scaseandremovethe
modem from its slot. Reinstall the modem using the instructions
in the electronic Installation Guide on the included CD, this time
usingadifferent slotforyourinternal modemoradifferent COM
portforyourexternalmodem.
5. ClickMoreInfo . Youshouldseealistofthe modem’sATI
commands.ClickOK andexit all open screens.
IftheATIcommandsdonotappear,continue reading to
troubleshootyourmodem.
Problem:Thecomputerorsoftwarewillnotrecognizethemodem.
Possiblesolution:
YoumayhaveanIRQconflict.Ifyouhaveaninternalmodeminstalledinan
ISA slot ona Windows 95 system:
1.Right-clicktheMyComputer icononyourdesktop.
2.ClickProperties .
3.ClicktheDeviceManager tab.
•Ifyouseeayellowexclamationpointoveryourmodem,you
havearesourceconflict,anditisprobablyanIRQconflict.
•Ifyoudonotseeayellowexclamationpoint,youmaystillhave
anIRQconflict.Continuewiththenext“Possiblesolution:”inthis
section.Iftheremaining“Possiblesolutions:”donotsolveyour
problem,continuewithstep4below.
4.Clickthe modem’s name to select it.
5.ClickRemove.
6.Youwillbeaskedifyouaresureyouwanttoremovethe
device.ClickOK.
7. Whenthe“ConfirmDeviceRemoval”screendisappears,shut
downWindowsandturnoffyourcomputer.
8.Unplugthecomputerfromitselectricaloutlet.
9.Removethecomputer’scover,andphysicallyremovethemodem
fromitsslot.
10.ReinstallthemodemusingtheInstallationGuideinstructions.
Useadifferentslotfromthe one usedintheinitialinstalla-
tion.
Possiblesolution:
Youmayhavepluggedyourmodem’sphonecordintoadigitalline.
Pluggingyourmodem’sphonecordintoadigitalphonelinecan
damagethemodem.Callyourphonecompanyifyouareunsure
whetherornotyourphonelineisdigital.
Possiblesolution :
Ifyouhaveanexternalmodem,youmaybeusingthewrongpower
adapterforyourmodem.Useonlythepoweradapterthatcamewith
yourmodem.
Possiblesolution:
Yoursoftwaremaynothaveautoanswerenabled.Enabletheauto
answerfeature.Inyourcommunicationsoftware’sterminalmode,type
ATS0=1(ATS“zero”=1)andpressENTER.
Youneedtoenableautoanswerbeforeeverysessionunlessyoualter
yoursoftware’sinitializationstringtopermanentlyenableautoanswer.

Ifyouhavevoicemail,yourdialtonemaybealteredbecausemes-

actualspeedswillvary;thisdoesnotmeanyouhavenotachieveda
V.90connection. Ourresearchshowsthatthe vastmajorityof
telephonelinesinNorthAmericasupportV.90connections.However,
duetounusualoroldtelephonelineconfigurations,someuserswill
notbeabletotakefulladvantageofthistechnology.Ifthisisthecase,
your3Commodemwilluseitsbackwardcompatibilitytonegotiatea
speedcompatiblewithyour phoneline,suchasV.34.
Itisimportanttorememberthatyourlineconditionsmaychange,so
youmaybeabletomakefasterconnectionsinthefuture.Tomake

2.Whenasked if you wishto shut down yourcomputer, click

3.When Windows indicatesthatitissafe toturnoffyour
computer,turnitoff.
4.Wait15seconds beforeturningthecomputerbackon.
5.Windowsmaydetectyourmodemuponthisrestartevenif
itdidnotdetectthemodemduringtheinitialinstallation.
