INTENDED USE
Tree Trunk Protector
Tree trunk protectors are used to protect the tree used as an anchor point for your
recovery. If you use anything other than a tree trunk protector you risk damaging both
the tree and your winch cable.
Recovery Bag
The 4x4 TOUGH® Recovery Bag is a multipurpose bag designed to carry your essential
recovery gear.
This product is intended for private domestic use only.

BEFORE USING THE TREE TRUNK PROTECTOR.
Unless directions are followed, physical injury or property damage may result.
Australia oers some of the world’s best o road playgrounds and when it comes to
getting o road, having the correct recovery equipment is imperative. Even the most
experienced o road enthusiasts will encounter the need to use recovery gear and a tree
trunk protector is an important piece of equipment in your recovery gear collection.
Using recovery gear can be extremely dangerous and should always be treated with
a cautious well thought out approach. Take the time to assess your situation as every
recovery will be dierent and it is vital you always put safety rst during a vehicle recovery.
• Always follow the product instructions.
• The Tree Trunk Protector must NEVER be used as a Snatch Strap.
• Persons intending to use the tree trunk protector should consider completing a
nationally recognized four wheel drive training course, or contact a four wheel drive
club for comprehensive advice on the proper selection and use of the strap.
• The strap must not be used for lifting or conventional towing.
• Persons intending to use the strap must ensure that the strap is not damaged and is
in a usable condition.
• The strap’s strength and stretch are reduced when the strap is saturated with water
and can reduce the MBS by 20%.
• An object such as a recovery damper, heavy bag or blanket must be draped over the
strap or cable connecting the vehicle to the tree trunk protector during use to reduce
any unintentional rebound of the strap.
• Vehicle OCCUPANTS and BYSTANDERS have been KILLED during recovery exercises
when recovery straps have been attached incorrectly.
• BEFORE tensioning the winch to the tree trunk protector, ensure all bystanders are
at least twice the length away from the recovery scene.
• The minimum breaking strength of the strap should be between 2 and 3 times the
vehicle’s GVM.

KEY INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
• Inspect Tree Trunk Protector before every use.
• If the Tree Trunk Protector is damaged in any way do not use. Keep strap away from
sharp edges especially when under load.
• Exposing the strap to high temperatures may cause damage and is to be avoided.
Ensure proper rated recovery points are used.
• When using shackles with a tree trunk protector always use approved rated shackles.
• Never exceed the Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) of a strap, or the Working Load
Limit (WLL) or Safe Working Load (SWL) of shackles.
USAGE
Getting Set Up
• Assess the area. Wrap the tree trunk protector around a large sized healthy tree trunk
and bring together the two eyelets. Avoid using undersized or dead tree trunks.
• Ensure the strap is not twisted, knotted or kinked.
• Attach a suitably rated bow shackle through both eyelets and connect a winch clevis
hook or winch extension strap to the shackle and secure.
NB – When using a BOW shackle.
• To avoid seizing the screw pin of the bow
shackle, it is a good practice to back o about
1/2 a turn after fully hand tightening the
shackle pin. Shackle pins may seize due to
force exerted during recovery operation.
• If using a shackle to connect to the vehicle
ensure it is a RATED SHACKLE and is adequate
for the recovery being conducted.
Attachment with Bow Shackle
• The strap must be suited to the GVM of the lighter of the 2 vehicles used in the
recovery process.
• Before attempting the vehicle recovery, passengers of the vehicles involved must:
- exit the vehicles
- stand as far away from the vehicles as possible
- avoid standing in the path of the vehicle performing the recovery

• The tree trunk protector can also be used when using a recovery snatch block to
change the direction of your winch line when the anchor point is oset or when
using a snatch block to increase your winches pulling power.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE – TREE TRUNK PROTECTOR
• Dirt, mud, grit and sand are abrasive and can damage the tree trunk protector.
Always clean your recovery equipment after use.
• Clean by using warm water containing a mild detergent. Ensure the strap is
completely dry before coiling and storing.
• Check the strap for any nicks, cuts, burn marks or wear marks. If found the tree trunk
protector should be disposed of thoughtfully.
• When nished using your tree trunk protector it is recommended to roll up the strap
to avoid the strap getting tangled, knotted or damaged

• Clean by wiping the bag down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and grit.
