1. Introduction
1.1. About this manual
The purpose of this manual is to provide the user with the basic information on the
relay REJ 527 and to focus on detailed instructions for using the Man-Machine
Interface (MMI) of the relay. In addition to the instructive part, the manual includes
a short chapter discussing the service of the relay.
1.2. The use of the relay
The directional or non-directional earth-fault relay REJ 527 is designed for earth-
fault current as well as zero-sequence voltage protection and supervision in
distribution substations. It can also be used for protection of generators, motors and
transformers. Generally the relay measures the zero-sequence voltage, earth-fault
current and phase angle of the system.
The low-set earth-fault current stage can be given a definite-time or an inverse-time
characteristic whereas the high-set earth-fault current stage and the voltage stage
feature the definite-time characteristic alone. The operation of the earth-fault current
and voltage stages can be blocked by means of an external control signal.
The protection relay REJ 527 is based on a microprocessor environment. A self-
supervision system monitors continuously the operation of the relay.
The MMI includes an LCD display which makes the local use of the relay safe and
easy.
Local control of the protection relay can be carried out with a portable computer
connected tothefrontconnector andremotecontrolviatherear connectorconnected
to the distribution automation system through the serial interface and fibre-optic bus.
1.3. Features
• Directional or non-directional low-set earth-fault current stage I0>with definite-
time or inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) characteristic
• Directional or non-directional high-set earth-fault current stage I0>> with
definite-time characteristic
• Deblocking zero-sequence voltage stage U0b>
• The two earth-fault current stages configurable to operate alternatively as two
voltage stages: a three-stage voltage monitoring operation possible
• Intermittent earth-fault protection
• Circuit-breaker failure protection (CBFP)
• Disturbance recorder
• Two accurate measuring inputs
• Galvanically isolated binary input with a wide input voltage range
• All settings can be modified with a personal computer
• Settings are stored into non-volatile memory and remain even in case of power
supply failure

2. Safety Information
Dangerous voltages can occur on the connectors, even though the
auxiliary voltage is disconnected.
National and local electrical safety regulations must always be fol-
lowed.
The frame of the protection relay has to be carefully earthed.
Current transformer has to be short-circuited before disconnecting
the relay from it.
Only a competent electrician is allowed to carry out the electrical
installation.

3.1.2. Display
3.1.2.1. Display idle mode
Self-supervision tests are run during initialisation. After all tests are completed, the
display will return to idle mode showing the text ABB.
)LJ 'LVSOD\LQLGOHPRGH
3.1.2.2. Display test at power up
When the auxiliary voltage is connected to the protection relay:
1. The backlight goes on.
2. The LCD display is tested by inverting it for a short time.
3. The display returns to idle mode and the backlight turns off.
)LJ 'LVSOD\WHVWDWSRZHUXS
3.1.2.3. Display backlight
• Normally the backlight of the display is off.
• When an arrow button on the MMI is pressed, the backlight turns on. If the MMI
panel has not been used for about 5 minutes, the backlight goes off automatically.
• A power saving built-in feature: pressing the [C] button switches the backlight

3.1.2.4. How to adjust display contrast
Contrast of the display is automatically adjusted depending on the ambient temper-
ature. To obtain optimum readability, the contrast can be adjusted manually. To
change the contrast, the LCD display must be in idle mode.
• To increase contrast, hold the [E] button pressed and use simultaneously the [↑]
button for adjusting.
• To decrease contrast, hold the [E] button pressed and use simultaneously the [↓]
button for adjusting.
)LJ $GMXVWLQJWKHGLVSOD\FRQWUDVW
The selected contrast tuning value is not stored. After power-off cycling of the relay
the contrast setting automatically returns to the factory preset value.
3.1.3. How to use push-buttons
The MMI includes push-buttons for manoeuvring the protection relay.
)LJ 1DYLJDWLRQEXWWRQV
• A touch on the arrow button up [↑] or down [↓] is interpreted as one step upward
or downward in a menu or as the minimum step up or down in the setting mode of
parameters.
• If the display shows the first item of a menu, pressing the [↑] button does not
affect the display at all; use the [↓] button instead. Correspondingly, if the display
shows the last item of a menu, push the [↑] button to move in the menu again.
• The right arrow button [→] is used for entering a subordinate menu from a higher
menu level and the left arrow button [←] for returning to a higher menu level
from a subordinate menu.
• In addition, the MMI includes buttons [C] (cancel, clear) and [E] (enter). A more

3.2.3. Passwords
There are two passwords: one for the MMI and one for SPA communication.
The MMI password protects all user-changeable values from being changed by an
unauthorized person. The default value for the MMI password is “999” and for the
SPA password “001”. With the default value “999” the MMI password is not active
and it is not required for altering parameter values.
The passwords can be changed but not read from a remote unit. The SPA password
is changed via the serial bus by entering first the current password in parameter
V160, and writing then a new password to parameter V161. The MMI password can
be changed via parameter V162. For changing the MMI password, see also section
3.2.4.3. Configuration.
As soon as the MMI password is changed from the default “999”, the password will
be required for altering parameter values. Once the password is given, it will not be
required again until the MMI returns to idle state.

3.2.4. Technical level
3.2.4.1. Menu system of parameters
The interactive communication between the operator and the MMI is based on
menus. Press an arrow button to activate the Main Menu. Everyone has the access
to view all the parameters, even the MMI password if the default password is in use.
In case the password is changed from the default “999”, it will remain hidden until
the valid MMI password is given.
The views are used for reading setting parameters, measured values, etc. The
parameters are divided into two main groups:

3.2.4.2. How to change settings
Actual settings are found in the first submenu, and they are not editable. Actual
settings consist of settings either of group 1 or 2, depending on which of these are
selected to be active. Settings of group 1 and 2 can be edited in the setting mode; see
the instructions later in this section.
)LJ 6HWWLQJV
Both the setting groups have their related registers. Switching between the setting
groups 1 and 2 enables changing a whole group of settings atthesame time. You can
switch between the setting groups 1 and 2 in three different ways:
1. by selecting “Group 1/Group 2” under the main menu group “Settings”
2. with a binary input signal BI
3. with the command V150 via serial communication bus.
)LJ 6HWWLQJJURXSVHWWLQJJURXS
When a large number of setting values is to be altered, e.g. during commissioning of
relay systems, it is recommended that you use a personal computer provided with
the necessary software. When these are not available or when only a few settingsare
to be altered, proceed as follows:
1. Select the main menu group “Settings”, and further the “Protect.stages”. Press
the [→] button to enter the actual settings.
2. Use the arrow button [↓] to select the setting to be changed and press the [→]
button.
3. Enter the setting mode by pressing the [E] button. If the default password has

required.
3. The first digit or character of the setting value/text of the concerned parameter
starts flashing; in case of an enumerator the entire text is flashing. Set the digit/
character by using the [↑] and [↓] buttons. The next digit/character to be set is
activated by pressing the [→] or [←] button; when setting an enumerator type of
parameter, the left and right arrows have no function.
4. To store new values, press the [E] button. If the parameter is of numeric type the
LCD confirms the storage by showing “---” on the display. If a setting value
beyond the allowed limits is confirmed in the setting mode, the former value is
restored and remains unchanged.

LCD are cleared only if the fault situation has disappeared.
• Press the [C] button for at least 5 seconds to unlatch the output contacts. Note that
the LEDs and the LCD display have to be cleared before this (idle mode).
• Press the [C] and [E] buttons simultaneously for at least 5 seconds to clear
