1. General
1.1 System Overview
The Advantech SKY-8101D is a highly configurable high performance server designed to balance the best in
x86 server-class processing with maximum I/O and offload density in a 1U 29.5" depth chassis.
The system is a cost effective, robust platform optimized for superior reliability in business critical applications
such as communications, edge and industrial high performance computing. It is specifically designed for high
density PCIe card payloads where maximum IO connectivity is needed or the integration of industry leading
offload and acceleration technology is essential. The power and cooling options along with the streamlined
mechanical design make it ideal for demanding applications requiring high performance acceleration
technologies such as GPU, DSP and FPGA cards.
Architected around the new Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable Family, the dual socket SKY-8101D combines
cutting-edge performance with the ruggedness, reliability, and long system lifecycles required by the industry.
With integrated security and compression offload based on Intel® QuickAssist technology and two 10GbE ports
with SR-IOV and RDMA support, the system offers best-in-class integration in a compact form factor.
The SKY-8101D accommodates up to four 10.5” PCIe x16 Gen3 adapters, designed for applications requiring
high TDP, high speed networking capacity or longer length add-on cards. The server can significantly scale the
bandwidth up and provide better cost advantages for applications such as NFV infrastructure requiring up to
400Gbps throughput, high definition multi-stream video processing and AI workloads leveraging high density
FPGA offload adapters. Redundant power supplies, the ability to withstand single fan failures, redundant
firmware images with failsafe upgrades and hot swappable FRUs make the SKY-8101D the platform of choice
for applications requiring zero downtime. Interoperability testing is performed with a wide selection of
Advantech and third-party PCIe card vendors in order to accelerate integration and shorten time to deployment.

1. The LEDs will be ON if the IPMI ‘Chassis Identify’ command (IPMIv2.0
specification, Section 28.5) is received, and they will be automatically OFF after 15
seconds (by default).
2. The LEDs will be ON if ‘Chassis ID’ button on the front panel is pressed. Press the
button again to turn off the LEDs.

Critical Alarm
The Critical Alarm LED is ON when the BMC detects any critical system failure event.
A critical system failure has a significant impact to the system, it means that the
system can either not continue to operate or it is operating under a non-redundant
power or cooling condition, resulting in increased risk for system failure.
The fault condition is defined following:
If any BMC sensor does pass a critical threshold
Or a critical discrete sensors is asserted (e.g. processor thermal trip, PSU
failure)

Major Alarm (System Status LED)
One system status LED in red color is provided for the SKY-8101D system chassis.
The system status LED behavior is based on Platform Event Filtering (PEF) alert
rules, which can be configured by user. The default configuration is to light up if any
critical sensor threshold or critical discrete events (fan failure, power supply failure)
occurs. These events will trigger the LED to light up. And the LED will turn off
automatically when all critical events are absent.

Minor Alarm
The Minor Alarm LED is ON when the BMC detects a minor system failure event but
such event does not affect the system’s normal operation. Such events are defined
as any non-critical BMC sensor event (such as SEL_FULL) being asserted or
Case_Intrusion sensor having triggered.
The MNR LED can be changed to overwrite mode and turned on or off by the PICMG
Set FRU LED State command. In this mode, BMC does not change the LED in any
condition.

Power State LED

This LED indicates that the unit is powered on. (The Payload power is on.)
1.4.1.3 Chassis Intrusion Event
When user opens the chassis top cover, the BMC will generate chassis intrusion event and turn on
MNR indicator LED. An assertion event is created if the chassis cop cover is opened. De-assertion
event can be triggered when the cover is closed and the sensor is re-armed (e.g. via sensor rearm IPMI
command). Without the rearm procedure, the event cannot be cleared even when the chassis is closed.
The SKY-8101D intrusion sensor id is 0x08. Please use the following IPMI raw command to clear/rearm
intrusion alarm:

2. Getting Started
2.1 Safety Instructions
Warning!
Advantech intends to provide all necessary information to install and handle the SKY-8101D in this manual.
Because of the complexity of this product and its various uses, we do not guarantee that the given information is
complete. If you need additional information, contact your Advantech representative.
Only personnel trained by Advantech or persons qualified in electronics or electrical engineering is authorized
to install service or maintain the product. The information given in this manual is meant to complete the
knowledge of a specialist and must not be used as replacement for qualified personnel. Operating personnel
must not remove equipment covers. Only factory authorized service personnel or other qualified service
personnel may remove equipment covers for internal subassembly or component replacement or any internal
adjustment.
Do not install substitute parts or perform any unauthorized modification of the equipment or the warranty may
be voided. Contact your local Advantech representative for service and repair to make sure that all safety
features are maintained.
This section provides warnings that precede potentially dangerous procedures throughout
this manual. Instructions contained in the warnings must be followed during all phases of
operation, service, and repair of this equipment. You should also employ all other safety
precautions necessary for the operation of the equipment in your operating environment.
Failure to comply with these precautions or with specific cas elsewhere in this manual could
result in personal injury or damage to the equipment.

2.2 Unpacking
Please check the delivery for completeness as you open the carton carefully. If any of the items listed in Table
2-1 is missing or damaged, please contact your Advantech representative.
For maximum protection during shipments, the SKY-8101D is packaged inside a double carton, collectively
referred to as the “box” in the remainder of this document.
When opening the box, you will find the SKY-8101D embedded in protective foam and the accessory box
embedded to the foam. Remove the accessory box first and then pull out the unit including the protective foam
using both hands. Now, remove the foam and the plastic sleeve on the unit.
After unpacking the unit, please check for any visible damage of the unit and contact your Advantech
representative in case of any issue.
Please note that unless agreed otherwise power cords need to be ordered separately.

2.3 Installation and Configuration
The SKY-8101D comes as a pre-configured system with CPUs, memory and peripherals installed in the unit. In
the case that you procured a barebone system or need to install components in the SKY-8101D for any other
reason, please refer to Chapter 3.
2.3.1 Rack Mounting
The SKY-8101D server is designed to be as a rack server. Please follow the basic guidelines below for rack
mounting:
Mount the mounting ears on the each side of the unit using the screws included.
1. Locate the threaded mount holes on the chassis on the side, close to the front panel.
2. Place the mounting ear over the holes and insert the two screws. Do not tighten the screws immediately.
After all screws have been inserted, hand tighten them using a PH2 screw driver to ensure secure installation.
Ensure the rack is adequate for the unit (weight) and the application.
Use the mounting hardware recommended by the rack manufacturer to mount the unit in the rack. For mounting
screws, compatible with the rack design, must be used and hand tightened to ensure secure installation.
Choose a mounting location that does not block any air inlet and air outlet areas of the unit, it is also
recommended to factor in heat generated by adjacent equipment and to avoid exposure to direct sunlight when
mounting the unit. If installed in a closed or multi- unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the
rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the
equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum recommended ambient temperature.
Route cables away from power lines, fluorescent lighting fixtures and sources of noise. Make sure that cables
do not block air inlet and outlet areas. Reliable grounding of rack-mounted equipment must be maintained.

2.3.2 Chassis Slide Rail Installation
To install the chassis slide rail on the SKY-8101D chassis, please follow below instruction.
Step 1: Remove the chassis (inner) member
Step 2: Mount the chassis (inner) member to the chassis
Step 3: Attach the cabinet (outer) member to the rail

Step 4: Mount the chassis into the cabinet

Caution!
DO NOT add any weight upon the system when chassis slide rail is installed.
2.3.3 Powering On
Caution!
Before connecting the SKY-8101D to the power outlet, please make sure that the power rating of the outlet and
the SKY-8101D’ PSU match. Please also make sure that the primary circuit and all power distribution in not
overloaded. Inrush current and steady state power specifications for the SKY-8101D can be found at the type
label on the bottom of the unit.
Connect the power cords to the PSU modules first and then to the power outlets.
The unit will automatically power on after power is supplied. The green LED on the front panel should be lit as
the unit is under power.
Please refer to Section 1.4 for the location of front and rear panel elements.
2.3.4 Connecting to Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse
The SKY-8101D supports a VGA Port and two USB ports at the front of the unit for connection of a monitor,
keyboard and mouse. Please refer to Section 1.4.1 for information on the location of the related connectors.
2.3.5 Connecting to the Serial Console
The SKY-8101D supports the operation via a serial terminal connection by default for scenarios where a directly
attached monitor, keyboard and mouse are not available or not desirable. In this configuration, BIOS output as
well as OS output are provided via a serial terminal connection.
The SKY-8101D uses a USB-to-UART bridge called CP2102-GM from Silicon Labs® to convert data traffic
between USB and UART formats. This chip includes a complete USB 2.0 full-speed function controller, bridge
control logic, and a UART interface with transmit/receive buffers and modem handshake signals.
The remainder of this section describes how to configure PuTTY on a Windows platform for connection with the
SKY-8101D serial console as a reference. Other terminal programs may be used in a similar way as well.

Open up PuTTY and begin the configuration as shown below. Please use the actual COM port’s number on the
client machine instead of “COM1”.
1. Specify “COM1” under serial line and “115200” for speed, no parity, no flow control.
2. Check Serial for connection type.
3. Check “VT100+” for keypad in the keyboard submenu.
4. Check “Colour” or “Both” for “Indicate bolded text” in the colours submenu.
5. Click the “Open” button and a PuTTY terminal screen will appear.

If the connection is successful you should be able to see the BIOS Power On (POST) screen after powering the
unit:

In case you would extend the time the BIOS displays the POST screen and waits for a key press to enter the
setup menu, you can do so via the BIOS setup menu.
2.3.6 Installing an OS
Several options are available for OS installation:
-System comes with a preinstalled OS
-Install an image from a USB key
-Install an OS via network boot.
If you use Advantech’s services to pre-install an OS, you can skip the following section.
2.3.6.1 Pre-installed reference OS
If you receive this manual along with a sample unit, the system will have a reference OS installed by default.
The unit will be ready to boot the reference OS from the mass storage option selected.
2.3.6.2 Installing and/or boot and OS from a USB key
To boot from a USB stick:
1. Create a Live USB stick using LiLi (available via http://www.linuxliveusb.com/) or a similar tool. If you want to
use a serial console, please make sure to configure the Linux properly (115200bd, 8N1, no handshake).
Enabling serial support in the Linux bootloader (grub or similar) as well as kernel debug messages via serial
console may be valuable for potential troubleshooting.
2. Install the USB stick in one of the front ports. Make sure you have a serial console connection established via
tools such as PuTTY as described earlier.
3. Power on the server.
