CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Warning
• Thermometers are not designed to work on live electrical
samples.
• Do not use this instrument when voltages at the sample point
exceed 24VDC or 24Vrms.
• Do not make temperature measurement in microwave ovens.
Leaking microwaves may result in burns and serious injuries.
• Repeated sharp exing can cause the RTD sensor to break.
To prolong sensor life, avoid sharp bends in the thermocouple,
especially near the connector.
International Electrical Symbols
This symbol on an instrument indicates a WARNING and that
the operator must refer to the user manual for instructions before
operating the instrument. In a manual, the symbol preceding
instructions indicates that if the instructions are not followed, bodily
injury, installation/sample and product damage may result.
Risk of electric shock. The voltage at the parts marked with this
symbol may be dangerous.

1.1 Receiving Your Shipment
Upon receiving your shipment, make sure that the contents are consis-
tent with the packing list. Notify your distributor of any missing items. If
the equipment appears to be damaged, le a claim immediately with the
carrier and notify your distributor at once, giving a detailed description of
any damage. Save the damaged packing container to substantiate your
claim.

CHAPTER 2
PRODUCT FEATURES
2.1 Description
The RTD Thermometer Model CA865 is a portable, compact digital meter
designed to use an RTD Pt385/100Ω as the temperature sensor for pre-
cise temperature measurements in a variety of environments.
The RTD probe provides fast response time, accurate measurements, and
good repeatability. Features include a 3 digit LCD with readings to 1999.
The meter is supplied with one RTD probe and a shockproof protective
holster.

2.2 Push Buttons
2.2.1 Center (Yellow) Function Switch
Turns the Thermometer ON or OFF. Slide the button to OFF after use.
2.2.2 Back-Light and °C/°F Button
• Press the button to turn the Back-Light ON.
• Press the button again to turn the Back-Light OFF.
• Press the button for 2 seconds to change the temperature scale to
°C or °F. The temperature scale °C or °F is displayed in the lower right
hand side corner of the display.
NOTE: At power-up the thermometer displays °C or °F, based on the last
measurement.
2.2.3 MAX Button
• Press the MAX button to enter the MAX mode. The “MAX” annunciator
appears in the upper right hand corner of the display.
• The thermometer then records and updates the maximum absolute
temperature values.
• Press the MAX button again to exit the MAX-recording mode (“MAX”
goes out).
• The HOLD button may be used in the MAX mode to “Freeze” (no
longer updates) the MAX measurement on the display.
• Press HOLD again to resume the MAX mode recording.
2.2.4 HOLD Button
The Hold button “freezes” the reading on the display. Press the “HOLD”
button to toggle (activate/release) HOLD. In the HOLD mode, the “HOLD”
annunciator is displayed in the upper part of the LCD display and the last
reading is displayed until released.

CHAPTER 4
OPERATION
4.1 Operating the Model CA865
1. Connect the RTD to the instrument input.
2. Put the RTD near or on the sample tested.
3. Press the ON/OFF button. The Model CA865 will display degrees Cel-
sius (°C) at power-up. Press the back-light button for more than 2
seconds to switch to degrees Fahrenheit (°F), if desired.
4. The RTD needs a certain time to respond. Take the reading when the
measurement has stabilized.
5. The HOLD button will freeze the measurement in the display, and will
not update until released.
6. When nished, remove the RTD from the sample, unplug the RTD
from the meter and slide the switch to OFF.

MAINTENANCE
Use only factory specied replacement parts. AEMC® will not be held
responsible for any accident, incident, or malfunction following a repair
done other than by its service center or by an approved repair center.
To avoid possible electrical shock, disconnect the sensor
connectors from the thermometer before opening the back
cover.
5.1 Replacing the Battery
The symbol appears on the LCD display when replacement is
needed. Replace with a standard 9-volt battery (NEDA 1604, IEC 6F22).
To replace the battery:
• Turn the Thermometer OFF.
• Remove the sensor.
• Remove the rubber holster.
• Remove the screw from the back of the meter and lift off the
battery cover.
• Replace the battery, then put the rear cover and holster back
on.
5.2 Cleaning
• Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with soapy water.
• Rinse with a damp cloth and then dry with a dry cloth.
• Do not use any abrasives or solvents.
• Do not let any liquid enter the case or sensor area.

Repair and Calibration
To ensure that your instrument meets factory specications, we recommend
that it be scheduled back to our factory Service Center at one-year intervals
for recalibration, or as required by other standards or internal procedures.
For instrument repair and calibration:
You must contact our Service Center for a Customer Service Authorization
Number (CSA#). This will ensure that when your instrument arrives, it will be
tracked and processed promptly. Please write the CSA# on the outside of the
shipping container. If the instrument is returned for calibration, we need to
know if you want a standard calibration, or a calibration traceable to N.I.S.T.
(Includes calibration certicate plus recorded calibration data).

Limited Warranty
The Model CA865 is warranted to the owner for a period of one year from
the date of original purchase against defects in manufacture. This limited
warranty is given by AEMC® Instruments, not by the distributor from whom
it was purchased. This warranty is void if the unit has been tampered
with, abused or if the defect is related to service not performed by AEMC®
Instruments.
For full and detailed warranty coverage, please read the Warranty Cov-
erage Information, which is attached to the Warranty Registration Card
(if enclosed) or is available at www.aemc.com. Please keep the War-
ranty Coverage Information with your records.
What AEMC® Instruments will do:
If a malfunction occurs within the one-year period, you may return the
instrument to us for repair, provided we have your warranty registration
information on le or a proof of purchase. AEMC® Instruments will, at its
option, repair or replace the faulty material.

What you must do to return an Instrument for Warranty Repair:
First, request a Customer Service Authorization Number (CSA#) by phone
or by fax from our Service Department (see address below), then return the
instrument along with the signed CSA Form. Please write the CSA# on the

CAPÍTULO 1
INTRODUCCIÓN
Advertencia
• Los Termómetros no están diseñados para trabajar en
circuitos eléctricos energizados.
• No utilice este instrumento cuando el voltaje en el punto de
prueba exceda 24VCD o 24Vrms.
• No haga mediciones de temperatura en hornos de
microondas. La fuga de microondas puede producir
quemaduras y heridas serias.
• El sensor RTD puede romperse si se lo dobla repetidamente.
Para prolongar la vida del sensor, evite curvas cerradas en la
termocupla, especialmente cerca del conector.
International Electrical Symbols
Este símbolo en el instrumento indica ADVERTENCIA y el operario
debe remitirse al manual de usuario en busca de instrucciones
antes de operar el instrumento. En este manual, cuando el
símbolo precede a las instrucciones, indica que si no se siguen las
instrucciones se pueden producir heridas corporales o dañarse la
instalación, la medición y el producto.
Riesgo de choque eléctrico. El voltaje, en las partes marcadas con
este símbolo, puede ser peligroso.

1.1 Recepción de Su Embarque
Luego de recibido su embarque, asegúrese que el contenido coincide con
la guía de despacho. Avise a su distribuidor sobre cualquier parte faltante.
Si el equipo aparece dañado, presente un reclamo inmediatamente
al transportador y avise inmediatamente a su distribuidor, dando una
descripción detallada de los daños. Conserve el empaque dañado para
respaldar su reclamo. No utilice un instrumento que aparezca dañado.

CAPÍTULO 2
CARACTERÍSTICAS DEL PRODUCTO
2.1 Descripción
El Termómetro RTD Modelo CA865 es un instrumento digital, portátil y
compacto, que utiliza como sensor de temperatura una RTD Pt385/100Ω
que le permite mediciones precisas de temperatura en distintos ambien-
tes. El sensor RTD tiene un excelente tiempo de respuesta ante los cam-
bios de temperatura y una buena repetibilidad.
Posee un display LCD de 3 dígitos con lectura de hasta 1999. Se provee
con una sonda RTD y un bolso protector a prueba de golpes.

2.2 Botónes
2.2.1 Selector de Funciones Central (Amarillo)
Presionando el botón central se enciende y apaga el Termómetro. Apague
el Termómetro después de usarlo.
2.2.2 Botón de luz posterior y ºC/ºF
• Presione el botón para encender la iluminación posterior.
•
Presione el botón nuevamente para apagar la iluminación posterior.
• Presione el botón durante 2 segundos para cambiar la escala de
temperatura a ºC o ºF. La escala de temperatura ºC o ºF se muestra en
la esquina inferior derecha de la pantalla.
Nota: Al encenderse el termómetro muestra °C o °F, según la última
medición.
2.2.3 Botón MAX
• Presione el botón MAX para entrar en el modo MAX. El símbolo “MAX”
aparece en la esquina superior derecha de la pantalla.
• El termómetro registra y actualiza los valores de temperatura absoluta
máxima.
• Presione el botón MAX nuevamente para salir del modo de registro
MAX (el símbolo “MAX” desaparece).
• El botón HOLD (vea abajo) puede ser usado en el modo MAX para
“congelar” (no se actualiza más) la lectura MAX en la pantalla.
2.2.4 Botón HOLD
El botón HOLD “congela” la lectura en la pantalla. Presione el botón
“HOLD” alternadamente para activar/desactivar la función HOLD. En
el modo HOLD, el símbolo “HOLD” aparece en la parte superior de la
pantalla LCD y se muestra la última lectura hasta que se desactive este
modo.
