PRECAUTIONS
Read the Operating Instructions carefully and completely
before operating the unit. Be sure to keep the Operating
Instructions for future reference. All warnings and cautions in
the Operating Instructions and on the unit should be strictly
followed, as well as the safety suggestions below.

Water and moisture -Do not use this unit near water,
such as near abathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry
tub, in awet basement, swimming pool, or the like.
Heat -Do not use this unit near sources of heat, including
heating vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate
heat.
It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5°C
(41“F) or greater than 35°C (95”F).
Mounting surface -Place the unit on a flat, even surface.
Ventilation -The unit should be situated with adequate
space around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured.
Allow 10 cm (4 in.) clearance from the rear and the top of
the unit and 5 cm (2 in.) from each side.
-Do not place the unit on a bed, rug, or similar surface
that may block the ventilation openings.
-Do not install the unit in abookcase, cabinet, or airtight
rack where ventilation may be impeded.
Objects and liquid entry -Take care that objects or
liquids do not get inside the unit through the ventilation
openings.
Carts and stands -When placed or
mounted on a stand or cart, the unit should
be moved with care.

Condensation -Moisture may form on the CD pickup
lens when:
-The unit is moved from acold spot to awarm spot
-The heating system has just been turned on
-The unit is used in avery humid room
-The unit is cooled by an air conditioner
When this unit has condensation inside, it may not
function normally. Should this occur, leave the unit for a
few hours, then try to operate again.
Wall or ceilina mounting -The unit should not be
mounted on a-wall or ceil;ng, unless specified in the
Operating Instructions.
Electric Power
1Power sources -Use on batteries or AC house current,
as specified in the Operating Instructions and marked on
the unit.
2Polarization -As asafety feature, some units are
equipped with polarized AC power plugs which can only
be inserted one way into apower outlet. If it is difficult or
impossible to insert the AC power plug into an outlet, turn
the plug over and try again. If it still does not easily insert
into the outlet, please call aqualified service technician to
service or replace the outlet. To avoid defeating the
safety feature of the polarized plug, do not force it into a
power outlet.
3AC power cord
-When disconnecting the AC power cord, pull it out by
the AC power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.
-Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this
could result in fire or shock.
-Power cords should be firmly secured to avoid being
bent, pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular attention
to the cord from the unit to the power socket,
-Avoid overloading AC power plugs and extension cords
beyond their capacity, as this could result in fire or
shock.

Extension cord -To help prevent electric shock, do not
use apolarized AC power plug with an extension cord,
receptacle, or other outlet unless the polarized plug can
be completely inserted to prevent exposure of the blades
of the plug.
When not in use -Unplug the AC power cord from the
AC outlet or remove al’1th~ batteries if the unit will not be
used for several months or more. When the cord is
plugged in, asmall amount of current continues to flow to
the unit, even when the power is turned off.
Maintenance
Clean the unit only as recommended in the Operating
Instructions.
Damage Requiring Service
Have the units serviced by aqualified service technician if:
-The AC Ipower cord or plug has been damaged
-Foreign ,objects or liquid have got inside the unit
-The unit has been exposed to rain or water
-The unit does not seem to operate normally
-The unit exhibits amarked change in performance
-The unit has been dropped, or the cabinet has been
damaged

POWER SUPPLY CONNECTIONS
USING ON AC HOUSE CURRENT
Connect the AC cord as illustrated below.

CAUTION
Use only the supplied AC cord. Use with other cords may
result in the risk of fire.
USING ON BATTERIES
Open the lid of the battery compartment on the rear and
insert eight R20 (size D) batteries, not supplied, as illustrated
below. Then close the lid.
To switch from AC power supply to battery power
supply, disconnect the AC cord from the AC inlet.
Batteries wear excessively when the cord is connected.
The batteries need to be replaced when:
The OPE/BATT indicator becomes dim, the tape speed
slows down, volume decreases, or sound is distorted during
operation.
Notes on batteries
To avoid damage from leakage or explosion, observe the
following:
●Insert the batteries with the 0 and 0 marks correctly
aligned.
●Do not mix different types of batteries or old batteries with
new ones.
●Never recharge the batteries, apply heat to them or take
them apart.
●Remove dead batteries.
If liquid leaks from the batteries, wipe thoroughly to remove.
IMPORTANT
●Make sure that the AC cord is disconnected and batteries
are removed before connecting speakers.
●Do not connect other than the supplied speakers.

Position the speakers.
To couple with the speakers, slide each speaker down
into the guide brackets on the center unit until the height
is level with the unit.
To separate the unit from the speakers, slide the
speakers up and off, while pressing the speaker release
knob.
Connect the speakers.
Connect the righ~ speaker cord to the Rterminals, and
the left speaker cord to the Lterminals.
Connect the speaker cord with the white broken line to
Qand the other cord to O.
OTHER CONNECTIONS
Sound signals can be input to this unit through the AUX/
VIDEO jacks.
Use acable with RCA phono plugs (not supplied) to connect
the external equipment.
Connect the red plug to the Rjack, and the white plug to the
Ljack. 4
To listen to the external source
Press the AUX button and play the equipment.
Refer also to the operating instructions of the connected
equipment for details.

REMOTE CONTROL BEFORE OPERATION
Inserting batteries
Detach the battery cover on the rear of the remote control
and insert two R6 (size AA) batteries.

When to replace the batteries
The maximum operational distance of the remote control
should be approximately 5meters (16 feet). When this
distance decreases, replace the batteries with new ones.
Using the remote control
The instructions in this manual refer mainly to the buttons on
the main unit. Buttons on the remote control with the same
names as those on the main unit can be used as well.
NOTE
●If the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of
time, remove the batteries to prevent possible electrolyte
leakage.
●The remote control may not operate correctly when:
-The line of sight between the remote control and the unit
is exposed to intense light, such as direct sunlight
-Other remote controls are used nearby (television, etc.)
POWER
PHONES
To turn the unit on
Press the POWER button.
After use
Press the POWER button to turn off the power. The display
changes to the clock.
NOTE
When using on the batteries, you cannot turn the power on
with the remote control.
Using the headphones
Connect headphones to the PHONES jack with astereo mini
plug (03.5 mm, 1/8 inch).
No sound is output from the speakers while the headphones
are plugged in.

MANUAL TUNING

TUNER MODE/OSC
1Press the TUNER/BAND button repeatedlyto
select the desired band.

2Press the+ DOWN or -UP button to
select astation.
Each time the button is pressed, the frequency changes.
During FM stereo reception, “STEREO” is displayed.
To play atuned station when the power is off (Direct
Play Function)
Press the TUNER/BAND button on the main unit. The power
is turned on and the tuned station is played.
To search for astation quickly (Auto Search)
Keep the 4+ DOWN or -UP button pressed until the
tuner starts searching for astation. After tuning in to a
station, the search stops.
To stop the Auto Search manually, press the ++ DOWN or
*UP button.
●The Auto Search may not stop at stations with very weak
signals.
For better reception
FM
Extend the FM antenna and orient it for the best reception.
AM
The AM antenna is inside the unit. Position the unit for the
best reception.
When an FM stereo broadcast contains noise
Press the TUNER MODE/OSC button.
“MONO” appears on the display.
Noise is reduced, although reception is monaural.
To restore stereo reception, press the button again.
To change the AM tuning interval
The default setting of the AM tuning interval is 10 kHz/step.
If you use this unit in an area where the frequency allocation
system is 9kHz/step, change the tuning interval.
Press the POWER button while pressing the TUNER/BAND
button.
To reset the interval, repeat this procedure.
NOTE
When the AM tuning interval is changed, all preset stations
(see “PRESETTING STATIONS”) are cleared. The preset
stations have to be set again.

AM. However, up to 16 stations can be preset for each band.
When astation is stored, apreset number is assigned to the
station. Use the preset number to tune in to apreset station
directly.

Selecting apreset number on the main unit
Press the TUNER/BAND button to select aband. Then,
press the ■PRESET button repeatedly.
Each time the button is pressed, the next highest number is
selected.
To clear apreset station
Select the preset station to be cleared. Then, press the II
SET button, and press the -CLEAR button within 4
seconds.
The preset numbers of all other stations in the band with
higher numbers are also decreased by one.
To scan preset stations
Press the P-SCAN button orI the remote control until “PRG”
flashes on the display. The Ipreset stations are received in
order for 5seconds each. The preset number flashes durin~l
reception. To stop scanning, press the In button. Flashing
“PRG” on the display stops.

loaded disc begins.

To check the remaining time
Press the REMAIN button during play. The amount of time
remaining until all tracks finish playing is displayed. To
restore the play time display, press the button again.
Selecting atrack with the remote control
Press the numberd buttons and the +1Obutton to select a
track.
Example:
To select the 25th track, press the +1O, +1Oand 5 buttons.
To select the 10th track, press the +1Oand Obuttons.
The selected track starts to play and play continues to the
end of that disc.
NOTE
●Do not use irregular shaped CDs (example: heart-shaped,
octagonal ones).
It may result in malfunctions.
●When loading an 8-cm (3-inch) disc, put it onto the inner
circle of the tray.
●Do not place more than one compact disc on the disc tray.

REPEA’TPLAY
One track, all the tracks or programmed tracks can be played
repeatedly.
Press the REPEAT button to display “REPEAT ALL” or
“REPEAT 1“.
To repeat all the tracks, display “REPEAT ALL”.
To repeat the current track only, display “REPEAT 1”.
To cancell repeat play, press the REPEAT button to turn off
“REPEAT”.
To repeal the desired tracks only, program the tracks and
press the REPEAT button to display “REPEAT ALL”.
RANDC)M PLAY
All the tracks on the disc can be played randomly.
Press the RANDOM button on the remote control in stop
mode to display” rRrI”.
Press the *button to start play.
The ➤11 button on the remote control is also available.
To cancel random play, press the button again in stop
mode.
NOTE
●Even if the -button is pressed, apreviously played track
cannot be skipped. The unit returns to the beginning of the
current track only.
●During random play, one-track repeat (REPEAT 1)cannot
be performed.
●If you select tracks with the numbered buttons, random play
is canceled.

To change the programmed tracks
Clear the program and repeat all the steps again.
NOTE
●During programmed play, random play cannot be
performed.
●If the programmed time is more than 99:59 minutes, or the
disc track number being programmed is 31 or above, the
display shows --:-- as the total playing time.

TAPE OPERATIONS

INSERTING ATAPE
●Use Type I(normal) tapes only.
●Tapes are played back on one side only.
Press the TAPE button and press the WA button
to open the cassette holder.

Insert atape with the exposed side down and the side to be
played facing out. Push the cassette holder to close.
PLAYING BACK A TAPE
Insert atape.
Press the >button to start play.
To stop play, press the ■=button.
To pause play, press the 11 button. To resume play, press
again.
To fast forward or rewind, press the -or ~button in
stop mode. Then press the WA button to stop the tape.
To start play when the power is off (Direct Play Function)
Press the -button. The power is turned on and play of the
inserted tape begins.
CONTINUOUS PLAY
After play on deck 2finishes, play on deck 1will start without
interruption.
During play on deck 2, press the II button then press the ~
button on deck 1.
The II button on deck 1will be released at the end of play
on deck 2.

About cassette tapes
●To prevent accidental erasure, break off the plastic
tabs on the cassette tape with ascrewdriver or other
pointed tool after recording.

Tab for side A
To record on the tape again, cover the tab openings with
adhesive tape, etc.
●120-minute or longer tapes are extremely thin and
easily deformed or damaged. They are not
recommended.
●Take up any slack in the tape with apencil or similar
tool before use. Slack tape may break or jam in the
mechanism.

SUPER T-BASS SYSTEM
The T-BASS system enhances the realism of low-frequency
sound.
Press the T-BASS button.
To cancel, press the button again.
NOTE
Low frequency sound may be distorted when the T-BASS
system is used for adisc or tape in which low frequency
sound is originally emphasized. In this case, cancel the T-
BASS system.
QSOUND SYSTEM
The QSOUND system provides arich, three dimensional
sound area.
You can enjoy amore enhanced sound.
Press the QSOUND button.
GRAPHIC EQUALIZER MODE
Press the ROCK, POP or JAZZ button.
The indicator of the selected mode lights up.
ROCK Powerful sound emphasizing treble and bass
POP: More presence in the vocals and midrange
JAZZ: Accented lower frequencies for jazz-type music
To cancel the selected mode
Press the selected button again.
When using the remote control
Press the GEQ button until the desired equalizer mode is
displayed.
The equalizer mode changes to ROCK, POP, JAZZ or nc]
equalization, cyclically.
To cancel, press the button again.
NOTE
At higher volumes, turning QSOUND on may cause sound
distortion. In this case, turn the volume down.

To stop recording, press the WA button on deck 1.
To pause recording, press the 11 button of deck 1. To
resume recording, press again.
NOTE
If squealing or beating sounds occur when recording an AM
broadcast, press the TUNER MO DE/OSC button, so as to
eliminate the noise.
Each time the buttons are pressed, the dot light on the
display is turned on and off.
To record from an external source
You can record the sound from an external source
connected to the AUX/VIDEO jack.
1Insert the tape to be recorded on into deck 1.

3Press the ●button to start recording.
4Start to play the connected external unit.
Sound adjustment during recording
The output volume and tone of the speakers or headphones
may be freely varied without affecting the level of the
recording.

To switch to the 12/24-hcmr standard
While the power is off, press the II SET button twice until
the clock is displayed and then press the ■button.
When the display switches, carry out steps 2to 5above to
set the clock again.
If the clock display flashes while the power is off
This is caused by apower interruption. The current time
needs to be reset.
If power is interrupted for more than approximately 10 hours,
all settings stored in memory after purchase need to be
reset.

The unit can be turned on at aspecified time every day with
the built-in timer.
Preparation
Make sure the clock is set correctly.

Designate the hour of the timer-on time by
pressing the ++ or _button, and the SET
button. Repeat to designate the minute of the
timer-on time.
Within 4seconds, select the duration for the

button, and press the SET button.
The duration for the timer-activated period can be set
between 5 and 240 minutes in 5-minute steps.
●If this step is not completed within 4seconds, repeat
from step 1.
Prepare the source.
To listen to aCD, press the CD button and load the
disc.
To listen to the radio, press the TUNER/BAND button
and tune in to astation.

To cancel timer standby mode temporarily
Press the TIMER button on the remote control twice to turn

Using the unit while the timer is set
You can use the unit normally after setting the timer.
Before turning off the power, repeat step 4to prepare the
source, and adjust the volume.
NOTE

MIC VOL control and the source to be mixed

To record the microphone mixing sound
Insert acassette to be recorded on into deck 1 and press the

NOTE
.During dubbing at high speed, the microphone mixing
sound is no? recorded.
●If amicrophone is placed too close to the speaker, a
howling sound (feedback) may be produced. If this
happens, move the microphone away from the speaker or
decrease the main volume.
●The use of aunidirectional type microphone is
recommended to prevent howling.
NOTE
If the unit is turned off during tape playback, the ~button on
the decks will not be released. Press the WA button to
release the >button.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS
Occasional care and maintenance of the unit and the
software are needed to optimize the performance of your
unit.
To clean the cabinet
Use asoft and dry cloth.
If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use asoft cloth lightly
moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use strong
solvents, such as alcohol, benzine or thinner as these could
damage the finish of the unit.
To clean the heads and tape paths
After every 10 hours of use, clean the heads and tape paths
with ahead cleaning cassette or cotton swab moistened with
cleaning fluid or denatured alcohol. (These cleaning kits are
commercially available.)
When cleaning with acotton swab 0, wipe the recording/
playback head Q, erasure head 0, capstans ~, and
pinchrollers Q.
After cleaning the heads and tape paths with aliquid head
cleaning cassette or amoistened swab, wait until the
cleaned parts are completely dry before inserting tapes.
Care of discs
●When adisc becomes dirty, wipe the disc from the center
out with acleaning cloth.
●After playing adisc, store the disc in its case. Do not leave
the disc in places that are hot or humid.
Care of tapes
●Store tapes in their cases after use.
●Do not leave tapes near magnets, motors, television sets,
or any source of magnetism. This will downgrade the
sound quality and cause noise.
●Do not expose tapes to direct sunlight, or leave them in a
car parked in direct sunlight.

Fuentes de alimentacion –Utilizarlo con pilas o
corriente alterna de la red, como se especifica en Ias
instrucciones de manejo yse indica en el aparato.
Polarization –Como medida de seguridad, algunos
aparatos estan equipados con enchufes polarizados en el
cable de alimentacion que pueden solamente insertarse
en un sentido unico dentro del enchufe de la pared. Si
fuera dificil oimposible insertar el enchufe del cable de
alimentacion dentro del tomacorrientes, invierta el sentido
de insertion del enchufe yvuelva aintentar conectarlo. Si
sigue siendo dificil insertarlo en el tomacorrientes, Ie
rogamos Ilame a un tecnico de servicio calificado para
que repare ocambie el tomacorrientes. Para evitar que la

medida de seguridad del enchufe de alimentacion quede
anulada, no fuerce el enchufe dentro de un
tomacorrientes.
Cable de aiimentacion
-Cuando se desconecte el cable de alimentacion,
sujetarlo por el enchufe. No tirar del cable.
-No tocar e! enchufe del cable con Ias manes mojadas,
ya que puede producirse un incendio o una descarga
electrica.
-Los cables de alimentacion deben colocarse de manera
que no queden doblados, pillados por objetos ni en un
sitio donde puedan pisarse. Prestar una atencion
especial al cable que conecta el aparato yel
tomacorrientes.
-Evitar sobrecargar [OScables de alimentacion yIos
cables de extension por encima de su capacidad porque
puede producirse un incendio o una descarga electrica.
Cablle de extension –Para evitar descargas electrical,
no utilice un enchufe polarizado en e! cable de
alimentacion con un cable de extension, receptaculo u
otro tomacorrientes amenos que el enchufe polarizado
puecia insertarse completamente con miras aevitar que
Ias hojas del enchufe queden expuestas.
Cuando nose utilice el aparato –Desenchufe el cable
de alimentacion de la toma de corriente osaque todas las
pilas cuando el aparato no vaya autilizarse durante
algunos meses. Cuando el cable esta enchufado, sigue
entri~ndo una pequefia cantidad de corriente en el
aparato aunque este apagado.
Mantenirniento
Limpiar el aparato solamente como se recomienda en Ias
instrucciones de funcionamiento.

Llevar el aparato a un tecnico de servicio calificado cuando:

ALINIENTACION ELECTRICA CONEXIONES

PRECAIJCION
Usar solamente el cable de alimentacion facilitado. El uso de
otros cables puede producir un incendio.
USO CON PILAS
Abrir la ta,pa del compartimiento de [as pilas situada en la
parte trasera einsertar echo pitas R20 (tamafro D), no
incluicias, como se ilustra abajo. Luego cerrar la tapa.
Para cambiar de alimentacion aCA aalimentacion por
pilas, desconectar el cable de alimentacion de la toma de
corriente del aparato.
Cuando se desconecta el cable de alimentacion, Ias pilas se
gastan excesivamente.
IMPORTANTE
●Antes de conectar Ios altavoces, asegurarse de que el
cable de alimentacion esta desconectado yIas pilas
sacadas.
●No conectar unos altavoces diferentes aIos que se
incluyen.
IInstalacion de Ios altavoces.
Para acoplar Ios altavoces, deslizar cada uno de ellos
dentro de Ias guias del aparato principal hasta que su
parte superior quede al ras con la parte superior del
aparato.
Para separar Ios altavoces del aparato, deslicelos
hacia arriba por Ias guias hasta sacarlos al tiempo que
oprime el boton de Iiberacion.

Conectar el cable del altavoz derecho en Ios termina.les
R, y el cable del altavoz izquierdo en Ios terminals L.

Es necesario cambiar Ias pilas cuando:
El indicaclor OPE/BATT pierde intensidad, disminuye la
velocidad de la cinta, se reduce el volumen oel sonido se
distorsiona durante el funcionamiento.
Notas sobre Ias pilas
Observar 10siguiente para evitar dafios causados por fugas
oexplosions:
●Insertar Ias pilas alineando correctamente Ias marcas ~y

●No mezclar diferentes tipos de pilas ni pilas usadas con
pilas nuevas.
●No recargar, calentar ni desarmar nunca Ias pilas.
●Sacar Ia.spilas gastadas.
Si se producen fugas de electrolito en Ias pilas, Iimpiar bien
Ios residues.
