PRECAUTIONS
Read the Operating Instructions carefully and completely
before operating the unit. Be sure to keep the Operating
Instructions for future reference. All warnings and cautions in
the Operating Instructions and on the unit should be strictly
followed, as well as the safety suggestions below.

Water and moisture -Do not use this unit near water,
such as near abathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry
tub, in awet basement, swimming pool, or the like.
Heat -Do not use this unit near sources of heat, including
heating vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate
heat.
It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5°C
(41 oF) or greater than 35°C (95”F).
Mounting surface -Place the unit on a flat, even surface.
Ventilation -The unit should be situated with adequate
space around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured.
Allow 10 cm (4 in.) clearance from the rear and the top of
the unit and 5 cm (2 in.) from each side.
-Do not place the unit on a bed, rug, or similar surface
that may block the ventilation openings.
-Do not install the unit in abookcase, cabinet, or airtight
rack where ventilation may be impeded.
Objects and liquid entry -Take care that objects or
liquids do not get inside the unit through the ventilation
openings.
Carts and stands -When placed or
mounted on a stand or cart, the unit should

Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven
surfaces may cause the unit or cart to n.-*

Condensation -Moisture may form on the CD pickup
lens when:
-The unit is moved from acold spot to awarm spot
-The heating system has just been turned on
-The unit is used in avery humid room
-The unit is cooled by an air conditioner
When this unit has condensation inside, it may not
function normally. Should this occur, leave the unit for a
few hours, then try to operate again.
Wall or ceiling mounting -The unit should not be
mounted on a-wall or ceil;ng, unless specified in the
Operating Instructions.

Power sources -Use on batteries or AC house current,
as specified in the Operating Instructions and marked on
the unit.
Polarization -As asafety feature, some units are
equipped with polarized AC power plugs which can only
be inserted one way intu apower outlet. If it is difficult or
impossible to insert the AC power plug into an outlet, turn
the plug over and try again. If it still does not easily insert
into the outlet, please call aqualified service technician to
service or replace the outlet. To avoid defeating the
safety feature of the polarized plug, do not force it into a
power outlet.
AC power cord
-When disconnecting the AC power cord, pull it out by
the AC power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.
-Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this
could result in fire or shock.
-Power cords should be firmly secured to avoid being
bent, pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular attention
to the cord from the unit to the power socket.
-Avoid overloading AC power plugs and extension cords
beyond their capacity, as this could result in fire or
shock.

Extension cord -To help prevent electric shock, do not
use apolarized AC power plug with an extension cord,
receptacle, or other outlet unless the polarized plug can
be completely inserted to prevent exposure of the blades
of the plug.
When not in use -Unplug the AC power cord from the
AC outlet or remove all the batteries if the unit will not be
used for several months or more. When the cord is
plugged in, asmall amount of current continues to flow to
the unit, even when the power is turned off.
Maintenance
Clean the unit only as recommended in the Operating
Instructions.
Damage Requiring Service
Have the units serviced by aqualified service technician if:
-The AC power cord or plug has been damaged
-Foreign objects or liquid have got inside the unit
-The unit has been exposed to rain or water
-The unit does not seem to operate normally
-The unit exhibits amarked change in performance
-The unit has been dropped, or the cabinet has been
damaged

POWER SUPPLY CONNECTIONS
Connect the AC cord as illustrated below.

CAUTION
Use only the supplied AC cord. Use with other cords may
result in the risk of fire.
Open the lid of the battery compartment on the rear and
insert eight R20 (size D) batteries, not supplied, as illustrated
below. Then close the lid.
To switch from AC power supply to battery power
supply, disconnect the AC cord from the AC inlet.
Batteries wear excessively when the cord is connected.

The batteries need to be replaced when:
The OPE/BATT indicator becomes dim, the tape speed
slows down, volume decreases, or sound is distorted during
operation.
Notes on batteries
To avoid damage from leakage or explosion, observe the
following:
●Insert the batteries with the 0 and Omarks correctly
aligned.
●Do not mix different types of batteries or old batteries with
new ones.
●Never recharge the batteries, apply heat to them or take
them apart.
●Remove dead batteries.
If liquid leaks from the batteries, wipe thoroughly to remove.
IMPORTANT
●Make sure that the AC cord is disconnected and batteries
are removed before connecting speakers.
●Do not connect other than the supplied speakers.

Position the speakers.
To couple with the speakers, slide each speaker down
into the guide brackets on the center unit until the height
is level with the unit.
To separate the unit from the speakers, slide the
speakers up and off, while pressing the speaker release
knob.
Connect the s~eakers.
Connect the righ~ speaker cord to the Rterminals, and
the left speaker cord to the Lterminals.
Connect the speaker cord with the white broken line to
0 and the other cord to O.

Sound signals can be input to this unit through the AUX/
VIDEO jacks.
Use acable with RCA phono plugs (not supplied) to connect
the external equipment.
Connect the red plug to the Rjack, and the white plug to the
Ljack.
To listen to the external source
Press AUX and play the equipment.
Refer also to the operating instructions of the connected
equipment for details.

REMOTE CONTROL BEFORE OPERATION
Inserting batteries
Detach the battery cover on the rear of the remote control
and insert two R6 (size AA) batteries.
When to replace the batteries
The maximum operational distance of the remote control
should be approximately 5meters (16 feet). When this
distance decreases, replace the batteries with new ones.
Using the remote control
The instructions in this manual refer mainly to the buttons on
the main unit. Buttons on the remote control with the same
names as those on the main unit can be used as well.
To use the FUNCTION button
The FUNCTION button substitutes for the FUNCTION
buttons (CD, AUX, TUNER/BAND, TAPE) on the main unit.
Each time FUNCTION is pressed while power is on, the next
function is selected cyclically.
●If the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of
time, remove the batteries to prevent possible electrolyte
leakage.
●The remote control may not operate correctly when:
-The line of sight between the remote control and the unit
is exposed to intense light, such as direct sunlight
-Other remote controls are used nearby (television, etc.)

FUNCTION
PHONES
To turn the power on
Pi’eSs one of the FUNCTION buttons (CD, AUX, TUNER/
BAND, TAPE). Play of the inserted disc or the previously
tuned station is received (Direct Play Function).
POWER is also available.
After use
Press POWER to turn off the power. The display changes to
the clock.
When using on the batteries, you cannot turn the power on
with the remote control.
Using the headphones
C[mnect headphones to the PHONES jack with astereo mini
riua (03.5 mm, ‘/8 inch).
N~<ound is output from the speakers while the headphones
are plugged in.

TUNER MODE/

Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select the
desired band.

When TUNER/BAND is pressed while the power is off,
the power is turned on directly and the previously tuned
station is received (Direct Play Function).
When using the remote control, press BAND repeatedly
while the power is on.
Press 44 DOWN or FF UP to select astation.
Each time the button is pressed, the frequency changes.
During FM stereo reception, STEREO is displayed.
To search for astation quickly (Auto Search)
Keep +DOWN or -UP pressed until the tuner starts
searching for astation. After tuning in to astation, the
search stops.
To stop the Auto Search manually, press +DOWN or ~
UP.
●The Auto Search may not stop at stations with very weak
signals.
For better reception
FM
Extend the FM antenna and orient it for the best reception.
AM
The AM antenna is inside the unit. Position the unit for the
best reception.

When an FM stereo broadcast contains noise
Press TUNER MODE/OSC.
MONO appears on the display,
Noise is reduced, although reception is monaural.
MODE on the remote control is also available.
To restore stereo reception, press the button again.
To change the AM tuning interval
The default setting of the AM tuning interval is 10 kHz/step.
If you use this unit in an area where the frequency allocation
system is 9kHz/step, change the tuning interval.
Press POWER while pressing TUNER/BAND.
To reset the interval, repeat this procedure.
When the AM tuning interval is changed, all preset stations
(see PRESETTING STATIONS) are cleared. The preset
stations have to be set again.

The unit can store atotal of 24 preset stations for FM and
AM. However, up to 16 stations can be preset for each band.
When astation is stored, apreset number is assigned to the
station. Use the preset number to tune in to apreset station
directly.

Astation is assigned apreset number, beginning from 1
in consecutive order for each band.

The preset numbers of all other stations in the band with
higher numbers are also decreased by one.

Selecting atrack with the remote control
Press the numberd buttons O-9, +1Oto select atrack.
Example:
To select the 25th track, press +1O, +1Oand 5.
To select the 10th track, press +1Oand O.
The selected track starts to play and play continues to the
end of that disc.
●Do not use irregular shaped CDs (example: heart-shaped,
octagonal ones).
It may result in malfunctions.
●When loading an 8-cm (3-inch) disc, put it onto the inner
circle of the tray.
●Do not place more than one compact disc on the disc tray.
To start play when the power is off (Direct Play Function)
Press the >button. The power is turned on and play of the
loaded disc begins.
If afunction other than CD play is selected with the power
on, one press of Fselects the CD function and starts play.

One track, all the tracks or programmed tracks can be played
repeatedly.
Press REPEAT on the remote control to display REPEAT
ALL or REPEAT 1.
To repeat all the tracks, display REPEAT ALL,
To repeat the current track only, display REPEAT 1.
To cancel repeat play, press REPEAT to turn off REPEAT.
To repeat the desired tracks only, program the tracks and
press REPEAT to display REPEAT ALL.

pointed tool after recording.

with adhesive tape, etc.
120-minute or longer tapes are extremely thin and
easily deformed or damaged. They are not
recommended.
Take up any slack in the tape with apencil or similar

mechanism.

sound is originally emphasized. In this case, cancel the T-

The QSURROUND system built into this unit uses only two
speakers at the left and right to create an atmosphere that
sounds as if you are surrounded by two front speakers and
two rear speakers.

If the clock display flashes while the power is off
This is caused by apower interruption. The current time
needs to be reset.
Ii power is interrupted for more than approximately 12 hours,
all settings stored in memory after purchase need to be
reset.
During operation 11 and ■on the remote control are also
available instead of II SET and ■PRESET on the main
unit respectively.

SETTING THE TIMER

The unit can be turned on at aspecified time every day with
the built-in timer.
Set the timer as follows while the power is on.

Make sure the clock is set correctly.

Designate the hour of the timer-on time by
pressing +or >, and 1ISET. Repeat to

Select the duration for the timer-activated
period with +or -, and press 11 SET.
The duration for the timer-activated period can be set
between 5 and 240 minutes in 5-minute steps.
Prepare the source.
To listen to aCD, press CD and load the disc.
To listen to the radio, press TUNER/BAND and tune to
astation.
Press POWER to turn the unit off after adjusting
the volume.
0remains on the display after the power is turned off
(timer standby mode).
When the timer-on time is reached, the unit turns on and
begins play with the selected source.
The volume level is automatically set to 21 when the
power is turned off with the volume level set to 22 or
more.

Press TIMER. The timer-on time and the duration for the
timer-activated period flash for 4seconds.
To cancel timer standby mode temporarily
Press TIMER twice to turn off 0.
Using the unit while the timer is set
You can use the unit normally after setting the timer.
Before turning off the power, repeat step 4to prepare the
source, and adjust the volume.
●Timer playback will not begin unless the power is turned
off .
●Connected equipment cannot be turned on and off by the
built-in timer of this unit. Use an external timer.

Each time the button is pressed, the time changes
between 5 and 240 minutes in 5-minute steps.
Specified time
To check the time remaining until the power is turned off
Press SLEEP once. The remaining time is displayed for 4
seconds.
To cancel the sleep timer
Press SLEEP twice to turn off SLEEP on the display.

●If you press SLEEP while the power is off, the power is
turned on and the sleep timer works directly so that the
unit will be turned off after 60 minutes.
To specify the time until the power is turned off, press
SLEEP once again then press <or >within 4
seconds.
●If the unit is turned off during tape playback, >PLAY on
the decks will not be released. Press WA STOP/EJECT
to release bPLAY.
Connect amicrophone with amini plug to the
MIC jack.
Prepare asource to be mixed and play it.
Adjust the volume of the microphone with MIC
VO-L and the source to be mixed with VOLUME.
To record the microphone mixing sound
Insert acassette to be recorded on into deck 1 and press ●
REC.

During dubbing at high speed, the microphone mixing
sound is not recorded.
If amicrophone is placed too close to the speaker, a
howling sound (feedback) may be produced. If this
happens, move the microphone away from the speaker or
decrease the main volume.
The use of aunidirectional type microphone is
recommended to prevent howling. ❑

CARE AND MAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS
Occasional care and maintenance of the unit and the
software are needed to optimize the performance of your
unit.
To clean the cabinet
Use asoft and dry cloth.
If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use asoft cloth lightly
moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use strong
solvents, such as alcohol, benzine or thinner as these could
damage the finish of the unit.
To clean the heads
When the tape heads are dirty;
-high frequency sound is not emitted
-the sound is not adequately high
-the sound is off-balance
-the tape cannot be erased
-the tape cannot be recorded on
After every 10 hours of use, clean the tape heads with a
head cleaning cassette.
Use separately sold dry-type or wet-type cleaning cassette.
Refer to the instructions of the cleaning cassette for details.
Care of discs

When adisc becomes dirty, wipe the disc from the center
out with acleaning cloth.
After cdavina adisc, store the disc in its case. Do not leave
the di’sc in ~aces that are hot or humid.
Care of tapes
●Store tapes in their cases after use.
●Do not leave tapes near magnets, motors, television sets,
or any source of magnetism. This will downgrade the
sound quality and cause noise.
●Do not expose tapes to direct sunlight, or leave them in a
car parked in direct sunlight.

If the unit fails to perform as described in these Operating
Instructions, check the following guide.
GENERAL
There is no sound.
●Isthe AC cord connected properly?
●Was an incorrect function button pressed?
Power is not turned on.
●Is the AC cord connected to the unit with old batteries
inserted?
~Remove all the batteries and disconnect the AC cord.
Then, connect the AC cord again and reset the unit as
stated below.
An erroneous display or amalfunction occurs.

Agua yhumedad –No utilizar este aparato cerca del

que se especifique asi en Ias instrucciones de
funcionamiento.

Fuentes de alimentacion –Utilizarlo con pilas o
corriente alterna de la red, como se especifica en Ias
instrucciones de manejo y se indica en el aparato.
Polarization –Como medida de seguridad, algunos
aparatos estan equipados con enchufes polarizados en el
cable de alimentacion que pueden solamente insertarse
en un sentido unico dentro del enchufe de la pared. Si
fuera dificil oimposible insertar el enchufe del cable de
alimentacion dentro del tomacorrientes, invierta el sentido
de insertion del enchufe yvuelva aintentar conectarlo. Si
sigue siendo dificil insertarlo en el tomacorrientes, Ie
rogamos Ilame a un tecnico de servicio calificado para
que repare ocambie el tomacorrientes. Para evitar que la

medida de seguridad del enchufe de alimentacion quede
anulada, no fuerce el enchufe dentro de un
tomacorrientes.
Cable de alimentacion
-Cuando se desconecte el cable de alimentacion,
sujetarlo por el enchufe. No tirar del cable.
-No tocar el enchufe del cable con Ias manes mojadas,
ya que puede producirse un incendio o una descarga
electrica.
-Los cables de alimentacion deben colocarse de manera
que no queden doblados, pillados por objetos ni en un
sitio donde puedan pisarse. Prestar una atencion
especial al cable que conecta el aparato yel
tomacorrientes.
-Evitar sobrecargar Ios cables de alimentacion yIos
cables de extension por encima de su capacidad porque
puede producirse un incendio o una descarga electrica.
Cable de extension –Para evitar descargas electrical,
no utilice un enchufe polarizado en el cable de
alimentacion con un cable de extension, receptaculo u
otro tomacorrientes amenos que el enchufe polarizado
pueda insertarse completamente con miras aevitar que
Ias hojas del enchufe queden expuestas.
Cuando nose utilice el aDarato –Desenchufe el cable
de alimentacion de la toma de corriente osaque todas Ias
pilas cuando el aparato no vaya autilizarse durante
algunos meses. Cuando el cable esta enchufado, sigue
entrando una pequeha cantidad de corriente en el
aparato aunque este apagado.
Mantenimiento
Limpiar el aparato solamente como se recomienda en Ias
instrucciones de funcionamiento.
Servicio yreparation
Llevar el aparato a un tecnico de servicio calificado cuando:
-Se haya dafiado el cable de alimentacion oel enchufe
-Hayan entrado objetos extrafios oI(quidos en su interior

PRECAUTION
Usar solamente el cable de alimentacion facilitado. El uso de
otros cables puede producir un incendio.
Abrir la tapa del compartimiento de Ias pilas situada en la
parte trasera einsertar echo pilas R20 (tamah’o D), no
incluidas, como se ilustra abajo. Luego cerrar la tapa.
Para cambiar de alimentacion aCA aalimentacion por
pilas, desconectar el cable de alimentacion de la toma de
corriente del aparato.
Cuando se desconecta el cable de alimentacion, Ias pilas se
gastan excesivamente.
Es necesario cambiar Ias pilas cuando:
El indicador OPE/BATT pierde intensidad, disminuye la
velocidad de la cinta, se reduce el volumen oel sonido se
distorsiona durante el funcionamiento.
Notas sobre Ias pilas
Observar 10siguiente para evitar darlos causados por fugas
oexplosions:
●Insertar Ias pilas alineando correctamente Ias marcas 0y
e.
●No mezclar diferentes tipos de pilas ni pilas usadas con
pilas nuevas.
●No recargar, calentar ni desarmar nunca Ias pilas.
sSacar Ias pilas gastadas.
Si se producen fugas de electr6iito en Ias pilas, Iimpiar bien
Ios residues.
IMPORTANTE
●Antes de conectar Ios altavoces, asegurarse de que el
cable de alimentacion esta desconectado yIas pilas
sacadas.
●No conectar unos aitavoces diferentes aIos que se
inciuyen.
1Instalacion de Ios altavoces.
Para acoplar Ios altavoces, deslizar cada uno de ellos
dentro de Ias guias del aparato principal hasta que su
parte superior quede al ras con la parte superior del
aparato.
Para separar Ios altavoces del aparato, desl[celos
hacia arriba por Ias guias hasta sacarlos al tiempo que
oprime el boton de Iiberacion.

Conectar el cable del altavoz derecho en Ios terminals
R, yel cable del altavoz izquierdo en Ios terminals L.
Conectar el cable del altavoz marcado con una I[nea
