BATTERY DRAIN ISSUES
WARNING Do NOT run an
AD-300 on batteries!

FOR MAGNETIC READERS ONLY
Check System Settings
Ensure mag track low power is enabled for
AD-250 if desired.
This should only be disabled if there is NO data of any type
on track2. In this conguration with low power wake-up
DISABLED, the lock is estimated to have <1 year battery life.
Check Device Firmware
Ensure the device rmware versions are recent
and compatible per AD-Series packages.
Recommendation is that all modules on a lock (reader and
main) be of the same package. Similarly, recommendation is
that all wireless devices (locks, WPRs, etc.) and linked PIM be
of the same rmware package.
If rmware version of the Credential reader and main PCB are
not compatible, update rmware to a valid AD-Series rmware
package.

Check for pinched wires
1. Check the exterior and interior base plate connections.
1.1. Check the exterior to interior through door wire
routing. Verify that the ribbon cable is not crimped
under the base plate.
2. Check the wires in the battery compartment.
2.1. Verify that the battery cable is out of harm’s way (for
example, not under a screw).
2.2. Verify that the cable is not pinched when the cover is
installed.
2.3. Verify that the battery cable is not run under the
battery strap.
3. Check that all wires coming to the main PCB from RTX,
DPS, etc. are not pinched.

4. Check the ribbon cable under credential reader and re
plate.
Ensure ribbon cable on exterior escutcheon is not pinched by
exterior cover near reader pocket.

Check for bent pins (tines)
1. Check for bent pins on the credential reader and
communication PCPs.
1.1. Inspect the credential reader male pins in the
connector.
1.2. AD-400: Inspect the inside escutcheon RF PCB male
connector pins.
1.3. AD-300: Inspect the inside escutcheon Comm PCP
male connector PINs.

Check battery holder
1. Inspect battery holder contacts.
Springs should not be bent. Replace holder if springs are bent.
2. Check that springs collapse properly.
Replace holder if springs do not collapse properly (do not
stack).
3. Inspect battery holder wire.
Check that there are no cuts or abrasions on the wire. Replace
battery holder if wire is damaged.
Verify that wires are not pinched when the holder, battery
strap, and battery cover are properly installed.
Gently pull on the wires to conrm that the wire and connector
pin are secure. Replace the battery holder if wires or
connector pins are not retained when pulled.
4. Inspect connector locking mechanism.
Make sure locking tab is not broken off.
Make sure locking tab securely holds the connector in place
when connected.
5. Check that battery holder is not crushed when cover is
installed.
6. Inspect battery holder housing.
FOR 4B-BATTERY PACKS
7. Check for updated 4B holder.
Notice reverse polarity blocking feature.
Notice improved contact crimp style (top).
Check that battery housing walls are not pushed outward.
Replace battery holder if housing has failed.
Batteries make good contact when installed properly. Replace
battery holder if batteries do not make good contact when
installed properly.

FOR 8B-BATTERY PACKS
8. Inspect battery holder housing.
Check for updated 8B holder.
9. Verify the Mylar insulator is installed properly in the battery
compartment.
10. Inspect battery housing.
10.1. Check that the battery housing walls are not pushed
outward.
Replace battery holder if housing has failed.
10.2. Check that the batteries make good contact when
installed properly.
Replace battery holder if corrosion cannot be completely
removed.
11. Inspect battery holder for signs of battery leakage.
Clean any corrosion. Replace the battery holder if corrosion
cannot be completely removed.
12. Verify that the batteries are installed correctly.
Make sure the batteries are facing out. Check that the battery
holder wire connection is in the upper right corner.
13. Check battery voltage.
14. Batteries installed, but not connected with lock (no load).
Measure terminal voltage (at the connector)
4B - If less than +5.0VDC, replace all batteries.
8B - If less than +10.0VDC, replace all batteries.
Note: Inspect the new batteries for signs of leakage before
installing.

Check lock sleep current
Lock sleep current is the current draw of lock at rest in sleep
mode (idle).
1. Ensure all devices are installed per the installation
instructions.
Check that the credential reader is fully seated. Check that the
RF PCB (for AD-400) is fully seated.
2. Measure sleep current using DVM and the instructions
HERE.
3. Verify that current levels are appropriate for the lock class
and reader type.
4. If sleep current is too high:
4.1. If replacement parts are available: Isolate current
draw to individual component.
•Swap credential reader, perform S1 RESET, then retest.
•Swap outside escutcheon, perform S1 RESET, then
retest.
•AD-400: Swap RF PCB, perform S1 RESET, then retest.
•Swap inside escutcheon, perform S1 RESET, then
retest.
4.2. If no replacement parts are available: Isolate current
to individual components.
While monitoring current, disconnect the through door
ribbon cable connection. If the current returns to proper
sleep level, the problem is in the outside escutcheon or
credential reader.
If the current remains above sleep current level, the
problem is in the inside escutcheon.

Inspect AA batteries
1. Verify that the batteries are inserted in the correct
orientation (with the positive ends of the battery aligned to
the “+” symbol on the battery holder).
1.1. If any battery is found reversed, replace ALL of the
batteries with new batteries. Inspect the new batteries
foir signs of leakage before installing.

BATTERY PACK CURRENT MEASUREMENT
Battery life in an AD or CO-Series lock is extended by the lock
“going to sleep,” or in a resting state. The only way to verify
sleep mode is to measure the current being drawn from the
battery pack.
WARNING
Do NOT utilize this
section for hard-wired
(e.g. AD-300) locks.
Equipment needed
•A digital multi-meter (DMM) capable of measuring DC
current in the micro amp (µA) range. A good example is
the Fluke Model 87, which is illustrated in this section.
•A small piece of thin plastic (can be cut from a drinking
straw or disposable plastic drinking cup).
Procedure
Verifying sleep mode is a two-step process. First, battery pack
voltage must be measured to verify that the lock is not in a
low battery condition. Once battery voltage has been veried,
battery current can be accurately measured.
1. Measure battery pack voltage.
1.1. Set the DMM to measure DC volts (DC V).
1.2. Connect the red DMM lead to the V Ω jack. Connect
the black DMM lead to the COM jack.
1.3. Touch the red DMM probe to the red battery wire (or
its test pad) on the Main PCBA. Touch the black DMM
probe to the black battery wire (or its test pad).
1.4. Observe the DMM readout.
•4-AA pack: should be 4.8 volts or higher.
•8-AA pack: should be 9.6 volts or higher.
Record the measured voltage, date, and lock location.
2. Measure battery pack current.
2.1. Set the DMM to measure DC micro amps (DC µA).
2.2. Connect the red DMM lead to the “mA µA” jack.

2.3. Insert the piece of plastic or insulator between any
positive (+) battery terminal and the battery holder
contact.

2.4. Hold the red DMM probe to the positive battery
terminal. Hold the black DMM probe to the battery
holder contact.
NOTE: The DMM is now part of the lock’s power circuit;
the probes must be held in place to maintain battery
power to the lock.
2.5. While holding the DMM probes in place, wait for the
lock to complete its power-up sequence.
NOTE: The lock will require approximately 20-25
seconds while the power up sequence is completed,
before it will enter its low power SLEEP mode.
2.6. Observe and record the DMM readout.
NOTE: Sleep actual current will vary depending on the
lock class and credential reader type being tested. In all
cases sleep current should always be less than 110
uamps.
The display above is indicating 70.5 micro amps.
NOTE: Remove the plastic piece from the battery holder
to restore normal lock operation after testing.

HHD CONNECTION PROBLEMS
Description of Problem
HHD will not connect or communicate with lock with USB cable
connected and SUS running and logged in.
Double tapping the Schlage button does not show “New Lock” or lock name. If
Schlage button ashes green once then stops, the lock did not see the HHD .
Procedure
1. Check that the HHD SUS communication protocol is set for
USB not Serial.
NOTE: Tap the icon to cycle between USB or Serial
communication modes.

2. Check that the USB cable is well seated on HHD and lock
USB connectors.
3. Conrm that the HHD SUS is the most current version.
To check the version on the HHD, see the SUS start up
screen, or click “About” on the main screen.
Latest SUS software can be download at schlage.com/support
www.schlage.com/support is the main site for support
document downloads.
4. Conrm that the HHD restarts the HHD USB
communication port by powering the HHD off, then
powering it on, or reset.
5. Test the HHD on another lock to determine if the problem
follows the HHD and USB cable.
6. Test additional HHD USB cable (if available) to determine if
the problem follows the USB cable or not.
If no other lock or cable is available, does the HHD connect
to the computer and sync with this USB cable? If the HHD
connects and syncs to the comoputer with this cable, this
generally indicates that the USB cable and HHD USB port
work properly.

7. Check lock battery pack voltage using a Digital Volt Meter
(DVM) while the USB cable is connected (the HHD will not
connect with a very low AA battery threshold for both 4 or 8
AA battery packs).
•4.5 VDC or higher required for solid USB
communications.
•If batteries are at low voltage, replace all AA cells with
new ones.
•Do not mix old AA batteries with new ones.
•Use high quality alkaline batteries ONLY.
•No other battery types are supported including: carbon-
zinc dry cell, lithium-ion, or any type of rechargeable
battery.

7.1. Battery Voltage Measurement Thresholds
4 battery holder
•New batteries: 6.2 VDC
•Low battery threshold: 4.7 VDC for SM & MT
3.7 VDC for MAG and PROX
USB stops working at 4.5 VDC
•Critical battery threshold: 4.6 VDC for SM & MT
3.4 VDC for MAG and PROX
USB stops working at 4.5 VDC
•Coin cell: New/full is 3.0 VDC. Low is 2.8 VDC.

•New batteries: 12.4 VDC
•Low battery threshold is 7.2 VDC
USB stops working at 4.5 VDC
•Critical battery threshold is 6.9 VDC
•Coin cell: New/full is 3.0 VDC. Low is 2.8 VDC.
8. Check coin cell voltage.
NOTE: AD-300 and AD-400 do not require coin cell.
9. Reset lock with power cycle.
9.1. Remove AA batteries or disconnect battery pack
connector for 10 seconds.
9.2. Press the Schlage button to clear residual power.
9.3. Reseat AA batteries or reconnect battery pack
connector.
9.4. Test connection.
10. Reset lock with the “Press S1” pushbutton on main board.
This reboots rmware and restarts internal communication
with main board CPU, reader CPU, and the communications
board if present (AD-300 or AD-400). Then test.
S1 Reset Switch position on main board.
11. Examine and reseat ribbon cable.
11.1. Make sure red stripe is to the left lower position when
viewed from straight on.
11.2. Make sure there are no bent pins on the board connector
that are not engaging the ribbon cable connector.
11.3. Make sure that the insulation has not been compromised
by pinching between the lock baseplates and the door,
allowing shorting signals or power.
11.4. Test the lock.
Pictures of correctly seated ribbon cable connector and
connector pins without ribbon cable attached.

12. Check the ribbon cable under credential reader and re
plate.
Ensure that ribbon cable on exterior escutcheon is not pinched
by exterior cover near reader pocket.
13. Reseat reader.
Check reader and baseplate connectors, make sure there are
no bent pins on the board connector that are not engaging the
reader connector, then test.

14. If spare locks or parts are available, swap out reader then
test.
15. Reseat AD-400 radio comm board or AD-300 RS-485
comm board.
Review main board connector, make sure there are no bent
pins on the main board connector that are not engaging the
comm board connector, then test.
Main board connector pins and comm board connector.
16. If spare lock or parts are available: For AD-400, swap radio
comm PCB, for AD-300 swap RS-485 comm PCB. Then
test lock.
17. If spare lock or parts are available, swap outside reader
baseplate, then test.
18. If spare lock or parts are available, swap inside main
electronics baseplate, then test.
19. If the HHD and USB cable work but will still not connect
with this lock, your lock is in need of replacement. Contact
customer service.

USING COUPLING PASSWORDS
Coupling passwords are a higher security option.
Overview
The Schlage Utility Software (SUS) and all AD-series and
CO-Series devices use a shared security token known
as a “Coupling Password”, to provide the highest security
possible for site administration and device programming.
The coupling password is not the SUS login password. This
Coupling Password is saved in the lock during the initial lock
commissioning process, and then validates a specic HHD to
a lock during subsequent lock update, programming, or audit
retrieval events.
When starting the Schlage Utility Software (SUS) on the Hand
Held Device (HHD) for the rst time the Coupling Password will
be default (123456). Changing the Coupling Password from
the default at this time will increase your level of security and
prevent others from using their SUS/HHD with the (123456)
default Coupling Password to gain control of your devices.
If the Coupling Password is not changed, then the rst time
the SUS is coupled with a device, the Coupling Password
programmed into the device will be the default (123456).
AD-Series and CO-Series devices do not come from the factory
with a Coupling Password pre-programmed. A device receives
its Coupling Password from the SUS during the coupling
process.
For a higher security, change the Coupling password and
ALWAYS couple with your devices using a NON-DEFAULT
Coupling Password.
Affected Products
All AD-Series and CO-Series computer-managed devices use
the coupling process to provide higher security. All devices are
affected except the CO100.

Setting the Coupling Password
For increased security, change your (default) Coupling
Password in the SUS to a private password to ensure your
facility is secure and only you will have access to your device
settings and programming features.
1. On the HHD, start the SUS application and select SUS
Options on the main screen.
2. Select Coupling Password on SUS Options screen.

NOTE: Notice the (six) asterisks within the Old Password text
box; these asterisks will only be there if the default Coupling
Password is also the current Coupling Password. If this eld is
blank, then the Coupling Password is not at default (123456).
3. Enter the Old Password into the eld provided if it is blank.
If asterisks are there, then the default password (123456)
is already entered.
4. Enter the new six-digit password into the New Password
text box.
5. Re-enter the new six-digit password into teh Conrm New
Password text box.
6. Press the Submit button.
A text box will appear conrming the change of the Coupling
Password: “Password changed successfully.”
7. Select OK in the text box which will return you to the SUS
Options page.
8. Now select the Back button on SUS Options to return to
the main screen.
9. You have successfully changed the Coupling Password in
the HHD!
CAUTION: Be sure to save your coupling password
in a safe place. If you lose your coupling password,
Technical Support will not be able to help you recover
it. To recover a lost Coupling Password, you will need
to reinstall the SUS application on the HHD and begin
again using the default Coupling Password.

Method A: Normal Operation
The programming of the new Coupling Password into each
device within your facility will automatically occur the next time
you perform any of the following actions: save changes within
device properties, change or set the device Time and Date,
load a new door le or perform a rmware update to the device.
See below.

The following text box would appear during any of the
above actions if the HHD were not currently coupled to the
device. This would result in having to couple the HHD and
device before any of the above actions could be performed
successfully.
Method B: Quick Coupling Password Updates
If you want to program the new Coupling Password into the
device without making any changes to the device do the
following:
1. Select Device Options on the Main Screen to go to the
Device Options page.
2. Select Couple HHD to Device on the Device Options Page.
The Utility Software text box indicates that the new Coupling
Password is now in the device.
The site administrator can use either of the procedures when
they want to update any or all devices with a new Coupling
Password.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why do I get an E805 popup error message when trying
to save changes, coupling with my device, or changing the
coupling password?
In the process of trying to couple a HHD to a device, this error
code will appear if the CO device is not in the coupling model.
The E805 popup error message will instruct the user on how
to place the CO device into coupling mode before trying again.
2. How can I tell what my Coupling Password is on my SUS/
HHD?
You can only nd out the Coupling Password in the SUS/HHD
if the default Coupling Password is also the current Coupling
Password. When looking at the Coupling Password screen
below, the asterisks will only be presented when the default
Coupling Password is also the current Coupling Password.
If you do not see any asterisks in the “Old Password” eld,
the password is NOT the default (123456) and you must see
your Site Administrator for this information or reinstall the SUS
application to RESET the Coupling Password to its Default
(123456) setting.

3. I have forgotten my Coupling Password and it is not at the
factory default setting (123456), how do I recover it?
You cannot recover your Coupling Password if you have
forgotten it. You will need to reinstall the SUS application
on the HHD and begin again using the default Coupling
Password.
4. I have forgotten my Coupling Password; can I ask my lock/
device what its coupling Password is?
A: No, for security reasons, it is not possible to recover the
current Coupling Password from a device

AD-400 COMMUNICATION ISSUES
Verify that your PIM is working properly and in link mode. After
determining that your PIM is working, follow the steps below.
AD-400 Will Not Link
Check the batteries. There are two ways to check the batteries.
1. Present card to reader.
If there is no LED response on the Schlage button, it could
signify the lock's batteries are low.
2. Using the HHD connected to the AD-400, go to "Lock
Properties" and expand "Power Status."
2.1. Check that the power status shows acceptable battery
voltage levels.
4 battery holder
•New batteries: 6.2 VDC
•Low battery threshold: 4.7 VDC for SM & MT
3.7 VDC for MAG and PROX
•Critical battery threshold: 4.6 VDC for SM & MT
3.4 VDC for MAG and PROX

2.2. If your batteries are in the low battery threshold,
replace batteries.
Link Process Does Not Begin
1. Check lock type with HHD.
1.1. Connect HHD to USB connector on AD-400 and start
SUS program.
1.2. Make sure to press the Schlage button two times to
activate the AD-400 USB port.
1.3. The following screen should appear.
Make sure that AD-400 is the device type you are
connected to. If not, the device will need to be re-ashed
(change Lock Class) to an AD-400.
The device can be re-ashed via the HHD. (Providing
package le is loaded on the HHD). See Change Lock

1.4. Select Device Options.
1.5. Select Change Lock Class.

Reader is Not Responding to Credentials
1. If Schlage button does not ash when presented with a
credential, then it could signify that the AD-400's batteries
are low.
2. Using the HHD connected to the AD-400, go to "Lock
Properties" and expand "Power Status."
2.1. Check that the power status shows acceptable
battery voltage levels.

•New batteries: 6.2 VDC
•Low battery threshold: 4.7 VDC for SM & MT
3.7 VDC for MAG and PROX
•Critical battery threshold: 4.6 VDC for SM & MT

2.2. If your batteries are in the low battery threshold,
replace batteries.
3. Check Keypad
3.1. Make sure that the keypad's # key is working.
3.2. Check that under "Reader Options" in the HHD, the
beeper is congured on.
3.3. Listen for a beep when the # key is pressed. If not,
swap reader.
4. Check RTX Switch
The RTX switch, actuated by AD-400 inside lever, connects to
printed circuit board via connector.
4.1. Unplug this connector.
4.2. Using a multimeter, connected to each pin on the
connector; ensure that when the lever is turned that
the multimeter shows closure.
4.3. Re-connect RTX switch connector to printed circuit
board.
4.4. Or, if multimeter is unavailable to check operation of
RTX switch: as an alternative, remove the RTX switch
connector and short the pins on the printed circuit
board during the Link Process (instead of turning
inside lever)
4.5. Reset lock and press S1. Then try to link again.

Link Polling Problems
Link polling (red/green) starts but packet test never begins.
1. Verify PIM is in link mode
2. Verify Com board is properly seated. Picture shows RF
board not seated properly
3. Try different com board.
4. Possibly RF sensitivity issue, reduce distance between lock
and PIM.
5. Check rmware.
Intermittent Loss of Link
1. Check batteries.
2. Foil gasket in place.
This improves RF ground plane.
3. Move lock close to PIM and test functionality.
3.1. Ensure that PIM and AD400 are installed on same
oor of building
3.2. Ensure that PIM is mounted vertically (mounting PIM
horizontally, such as on a ceiling, will change antenna
polarization)
4. Check room RF environment.
The AD-400 may have connection problems due to the room
environment affecting radio frequency communications.
4.1. Test door in open AND closed positions.
4.2. How is the wall constructed? Are there metal
structures inside the wall (ie; metal studs or metal
lathe)?
4.3. Are there conduits, equipment mount near PIM,
multiple PIMs stacked in close proximity?
5. Check rmware.
Make sure AD lock and PIM have the latest rmware.
6. Check PIM location,
Is distance between PIM and AD400 greater than maximum
prescribed distance? RF communication is rated at up to 200
feet (indoors) and up to 1000 feet (outdoors, line of sight). If
PIM is too far:
6.1. Try a different comm board.
6.2. Move components closer, then try connecting again.
6.3. Try external or hi gain antenna.
6.4. Make sure line of sight is not blocked. Move PIM or
antenna.
7. Check for RF interference.
7.1. Are multiple PIMs in close proximity? This may cause
interference.
7.2. Are the PIM wires are routed close to the PIM comm
board?
Keep all wiring away from antenna.

7.3. Make sure there are no metal enclosures near PIM.
7.4. Construction in the area may cause interference.
7.5. Are there metal conduits? Relocate PIM.
7.6. Check for external interference.
Try to isolate and shut down RF emitters. See if
communication improves.
8. Try different frequency as far away from the suspect
frequency as reasonable.
Consider DCS (Dynamic Channel Switching).
8.1. Connect HHD to PIM and select "Device Options."
8.2. Select "PIM Properties," then select "Edit."
8.3. Check the currently selected RF channel.
8.4. Change the selection to a different channel lby
selecting a different channel in the drop down list.
Make sure to save the new selection.
8.5. Try enabling "Channel Switching" by picking a group
of channels in the drop down.
NOTE: Channel Switching will reduce battery life.
9. Swap comm board.

10. Check communications between PIM and OEM system.
Check that both red and green RX and TX LEDs are ashing
on PIM.
10.1. If both red and green RX and TX LEDs are not
ashing, try reversing the RS485 + and - connections.
10.2. If the green LED is ashing, it signies that good
RS485 data is being received by the PIM. If the red
LED is not also ashing, it signies that the PIM is not
responding to the received data.
This is most likely due to having an incorrect RS485
address programmed into the PIM.
11. To see what RS485 address is programmed into the PIM,
connect HHD to PIM and log into SUS program.
11.1. Select "Device Options," then "PIM Properties," then
"Edit."
The RS485 Address that the PIM is currently set to is
now displayed. Make sure that this address corresponds
to what is called out by the Head End Software. Be
advised that some OEM Software providers begin their
RS485 addressing at address 1. IR begins their RS485
address at address 0. Sielox starts at 3.
Sometimes it will be necessary to increment the RS485
address, in the PIM, by one in order to compensate for
the difference.
If groups of locks need to be split over multiple PIMs but
utilize the same port on the panel, it may be necessary
to utilize High Low addressing.
12. High Door/Low Door addressing.
One PIM may have 5 locks and another 3. To allow this logical
grouping, the rst PIM would have Low Door 0 and
High Door 4. The second PIM would have Low Door 5 and
High Door 8. The overall panel port device capacity may also
affect the upper limits.
12.1. Program the desired RS485 address and make sure
to save it.
12.2. Now check to see if both RS485 LEDs on the PIM are
now both ashing. If so, good RS485 communication
between the controller and PIM has now been
established.

13. Check RS485 cables.
13.1. Make sure the cable is run less than 4000 feet.
13.2. Has twisted pair cabling been used?
13.3. Has the RS485 cabling utilized proper topology:
13.4. Has drain wire been used (ground)?
If so, ensure that only one side of the cable run has the
drain wire connected to ground (to avoid ground loops).
14. As a last resort, install 120 ohm resistors at rst and last
RS485 ends. Install resistors across the RS485 + and
-. These 120 ohm resistors will match the characteristic
impedance of the cabling used and will minimize signal
reections.
