Type of Connector
All twisted pair ports feature 9-pin RJ-45 connectors. (For the port
pinouts, referto RJ-45 Twisted Pair Port Pinouts onpage70 in
Appendix A, Technical Specifications.
Speed
The ports are 10Base-T and100Base-TX compliant and are capable of 10
megabitspersecond(Mbps)or 100 Mbps speed.You can set theport
speed manually or, since the ports are IEEE802.3u Auto-Negotiation
compliant, you can let the switch set each port’sspeedautomatically.
WithAuto-Negotiation,theswitchautomatically matchesthe highest
possible common speed between each switch port and each end node.
For example, if an end node is capable of only 10 Mbps, the switch sets
the port connected tothe end node to 10 Mbps.

Auto-Negotiationisactivatedasthedefaultonalltwistedpairports
on the switch. To deactivate Auto-Negotiation and set the speeds
manually, refer to the AT-S39 Management Software User’s
Guide.
Maximum Distance
Eachtwistedpairport hasa maximumoperating distance of100 m(328
ft.).
Type of Cabling
For10 Mbps operation, Category 3 or better 100 ohm shielded or
unshielded twisted pair cabling isrequired.For 100 Mbps operation,
Category5orEnhancedCategory5(5E)100ohmshieldedorunshielded
twisted pair cabling is required.
Auto-MDI
The ports are auto-MDI and IEEE 802.3ab-compatible. They
automatically configure themselves as either MDI or MDI-X. This feature
allows you to use eitherstraight-through or crossover twisted pair
cables to connectdevicesto the ports.
Duplex Mode
Eachtwistedpairporton the switchcan operatein eitherhalf- orfull-
duplexmode. The twisted pairports are IEEE802.3u-compliantandwill
Auto-Negotiatetheduplexmodesetting.Iftheendnodeconnectedtoa
twistedpairporton the switch is capableof full-duplex operation,the
switchsetsthetwistedpairporttofull-duplex.Iftheendnodeiscapable
ofonlyhalf-duplex,theportis settohalf-duplex.
Ifdesired,Auto-Negotiationononeoralloftheswitchportscanbe
disabled so that you can set the duplex mode manually through the
switch’smanagement software.

The port LEDs on the front panel display port status information. Each
port hastwo LEDs. The Link LED, as described in Table 1 below, indicates
whetherthereisavalidlinkbetweena portandtheendnodeconnected
toit.
Each port also has a Mode LED.This LED displays a varietyof status
information,includingport speed andduplex mode. Use the Mode
Selectbutton to toggle the Mode LEDsto display differentstatus
information.TheLEDsnexttotheModeSelectbuttonindicatethestatus
being displayed by the port Mode LEDs. For example, if the Mode100
LED is lit, then the port Mode LEDs are displaying port speed.
Note
TogglingtheModeSelectionbutton doesnotaffectthenormal
operationsof theswitch.

LINK OFF Indicates that there isno link between the port
and the end node.
Steady Green Indicates a valid linkhas been established
between the port and the end node.
Mode - COL OFF Indicates that no data collisions are occurring on
theport.
FlashingGreen Indicatesthat datacollisions are occurring on the
port.
Mode - 100 OFF Indicates that the port is operating at 10 Mbps.
Steady Green Indicates that the port is operating at 100 Mbps
Mode - FULL OFF Indicates that the port is operating in half-duplex
mode.
Solid Green Indicatesthat the port isoperating in full-duplex
mode.
Mode- ACT OFF Indicatesthat there isno activity on theport.

Flashing Red Indicatesthat the switch is loading its operating software,
runningdiagnostictests,writingmessagesto FLASH,or
downloadingfiles usingXMODEM.
MASTER Solid Green Indicates thatthe switchis functioning astheMaster switch
of an enhanced stack.
OFF Indicatesthat the switch is a slave switch of anenhanced
stack or is not a member of a stack.
PWR Solid Green Indicates that the switch is receiving power.

The AT-8024GBFast Ethernet Switch hastwo expansionslots on the
front panel, labelled Port A and Port B. Each slot can accommodate one
optional GBIC module.
A GBIC module isa gigabit (1000Base) transceiver. Figure 8shows an
example of a fiber optic GBIC module. You can use GBIC modules to
quicklyandeasilyaddGigabitEthernetportstoyourswitch.

GBIC Module
LEDs Next to each GBIC slot are two LEDs. The LEDsdisplay theoperating
statusofaGBICmodule.UsetheModeSelectButtontotogglethestatus
information displayed by aGBIC Mode LED. The LEDs are defined in
Table 3.
