Operating Instructions
Important Safety Information –
Please read carefully

Caution: Do not use any power supply other than the
one supplied with your genuine AquaRay SmartControl 8
unit. The use of a different power supply will invalidate the
guarantee.
- Always isolate the PSU from the mains electricity
before installing or carrying out any maintenance
to your AquaRay SmartControl 8 unit unit.
Caution: The AquaRay SmartControl 8 unit is not
waterproof and therefore must not be mounted above the
aquarium or in any position where it may accidentally fall into
water or be splashed by water.
Caution: Do not operate this appliance if it has been
damaged, is malfunctioning, or has been dropped or
immersed in water.
- This unit is designed to be used indoors and is
not suitable for any outdoor applications.
Caution: Always leave a drip-loop in the DC supply cable
to the AquaRay lamp unit to prevent water
running down the cable and reaching the AquaRay
SmartControl 8 unit.
- Dispose of this unit responsibly. Check with
your local authority for disposal information.

Installation
To ensure water shedding properties (should the unit
accidentally get splashed), the unit should be mounted
vertically on a surface using the screws supplied in the
fixing kit. These engage into the keyhole slots on the back
of the unit.
Self adhesive feet are supplied in the fixing kit and can be
placed in the circular indents on the back of the unit to
prevent it marking the wall.
When mounting the SmartControl 8 unit, please make
sure there is enough space below to connect the PSU and
lamps.
Once the unit is in position, connect the lamps and
temperature sensor (if using) to the SmartControl 8 unit
by plugging them into the correct sockets on the control
unit.
Please note: Channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all controlled
independently of each other.
Connect the PSU to the SmartControl 8 unit by plugging it
into the input.
Operation
Once mounted and connected according to the installation
instructions above, the mains power to the PSU may be
switched on.

When the controller has entered ‘RUN’ mode (i.e. the clock
is displayed) you may program the unit as detailed below:-
• Pressing the ENTER button will cycle through the
available menus (see the separate Menu Guide sheet). f
no button is pressed for 10 seconds, the SmartControl 8
unit will return to ‘RUN’ mode.
• Pressing hin ‘RUN’ mode will cycle through ON, OFF,
and AUTO modes, where ON is all channels 100% on,
OFF is all channels 0%, and AUTO resumes the user set
program.
• Pressing iin ‘RUN’ mode will initiate the‘Storm Function’
(see below for details of this function).
• Pressing iwhilst in ‘Storm Function’ will exit and resume
the user set program.
• A DEMO mode can be entered by holding the ENTER
button during power up. The display will show ‘DEMO’
n DEMO mode, the lamps continuously brighten and dim
according to the following set program:-
Ramp up to 100% over 15 seconds
Ramp down to 5% over 15 seconds
Storm function for 10 seconds
Ramp up to 100% over 15 seconds
Ramp down to 5% over 15 seconds
The unit will then exit demo mode and return to the
user set program
Setup
• First follow the Menu Guide sheet to set the current
time (under T ME SETT NG)
• For each channel set your timings
• Lamps start to brighten when the ON T ME equals the
current time. A RAMP time of 1 is equivalent to 1 minute
before lamps are at full brightness.
• Lamps will start to dim when the OFF T ME equals the
current time.
• RAMP has a range of 1 to 240 (1 minute to 4 hours).

• The MAX LEV setting allows the maximum brightness of
each channel to be set as a percentage.
• The M N LEV settings for each channel is the level that
the channel dims down to during the OFF phase.
Please note: the minimum level cannot exceed the
maximum level. At ‘OFF T ME’ the units must dim and at
‘ON T ME’ the units must brighten.
Moon function
Useful Tip: Some coral spawnings are timed with the phases
of the moon.
This function can be toggled on or off in the miscellaneous
settings. t mimics the phases of the moon by varying the
minimum light levels of channel 4 throughout a 30 day cycle.
Cloud function
Useful Tip: Using cloud function will offer a more realistic
lighting scene for your aquarium, and could help prevent coral
bleaching through photoinhibition.
This function can be toggled on or off in the miscellaneous
settings and simulates clouds passing over the tank by dimming
the channels down and then brightening them in sequence.
Clouds pass over at random (20 per hour) and only dim by a
maximum of 20%.
Storm Function
Useful Tip: Using the storm function whilst carrying out a
water change has been known to trigger breeding
behaviour in certain species of fish.
The storm function can be started by a button press (see
“Operation” above), or can be toggled on or off to create
1 storm per day at a random time.
When storm function is entered the following sequence occurs:-
1. The controlled AquaRay light units will dim down to 5%
across a 5 minute period.

During this period ‘STORM <<’ will be displayed on the
screen to indicate the storm approaching.
2. The controlled AquaRay light units will simulate lightning
by flashing at random intervals across a period of
30 minutes. During this period ‘STORM Ϟ’ will be
displayed on the screen to indicate lightning.
3. The AquaRay light units will stop flashing and brighten
back to their programmed level across a 5 minute
period. During this period ‘STORM >>’ will be displayed
to indicate the storm ending.
4. The user’s set program will be resumed.
WARNING: The storm function involves flashing lights
which have been known to cause seizures in some
sufferers of epilepsy.
Light Level Sensor
Useful Tip: Use this in conjunction with remote internet
access to ensure that your lights are working as they should.
nsert the fibre optic light pipe into the Light Pipe nput on
the controller. Place the lensed end of the light pipe in the
area in which you want to monitor light levels. Ensure that the
lights are at their maximum and then use the menu system to
navigate to L GHT CA and select YES to calibrate the level to
100%. You will then be able to monitor what level your lights
are at. Alternatively you can measure how much light hits
certain areas of your aquarium: Use L GHT CA to calibrate
to the lights’ maximum by activating it when the light pipe
lens is next to the light source, and then you will be able to
measure the percentage of light at different parts of the tank
my moving the lens to different areas.
Temperature Sensor
Useful Tip: f you already have a thermometer/temperature
sensor in your tank, the SmartControl 8 temperature
sensor could be used to monitor the temperature of your
lights instead.

To use the temperature sensor, the temperature probe must
be connected to the COM port on the controller before
the power is turned on. Once connected and powered up,
the temperature can be displayed by navigating through to
the menu system, or by looking at the computer interface.
Master/Slave
If you would like to use up to x SmartControl 8 units
together, you can connect them using the Master/Slave
connection cable (available separately - not supplied). This
connects from the spare USB on the temperature sensor
cable, to the COM port of the next unit. You should use
the menu system to set the first controller in line to be
Master, the second to be Slave1, the third to be Slave2 and
the fourth to be Slave3. All units will then follow what the
Master controller is doing.
1-10V Control
The SmartControl 8 can be connected to any external
lighting controller or aquarium computer with a 1-10V
output and it will slave from that signal. To enable this
mode, simply navigate through the menu system on the
controller and turn 1-10V to ON. Cables to connect to
various devices are sold separately. If you wish to make
your own cable,
connect via the female
type A USB connector
on the temperature
sensor cable, where Pin
1 is 1-10V and Pin is
GND (see diagram).
Tropical Marine Centre does supply a male Type A USB to 2
core bare ended cable to help with this task (supplied
separately). Contact your local retailer for further details.

Firmware Version
The version of firmware running on the controller can be
viewed by scrolling through the miscellaneous settings (see
Menu Guide sheet).
Connection to a PC/Mac
The SmartControl 8 can be connected directly to a PC/Mac
using a cat5 ethernet cable (not supplied). Plug one end into a
spare ethernet port on the PC/Mac and the other end into
the LAN port on the SmartControl 8 unit.
Wait for 10 seconds and then navigate through the menu
system on the SmartControl 8 to view the P address (see
the Menu Guide sheet).
Please note: the P address may change each time the
controller is connected to the network.
f you enter this P address into the address bar of your
web browser you will then see the controller’s settings
displayed on the device. You can also change and save those
settings.
Please note: for your security the settings are password
protected. The default username is ‘admin’ and the
password is ‘icontrol’. You can change these if you wish, and
the password can be reset to ‘icontrol’ via the push button
menu system should you forget your own password (see
the Menu Guide sheet).
Wireless connection to any WiFi device
(PC, Mac, Tablet, Smartphone)
The SmartControl 8 can be connected directly to a
wireless network using a cat5 ethernet cable and wireless
router or wireless bridge (not supplied).

Plug one end of the cat5 cable into a spare ethernet port
on the wireless router/bridge and the other end into the
LAN port on the SmartControl 8 unit.
Wait for 10 seconds and then navigate through the menu
system on the SmartControl 8 to view the P address (See
the Menu Guide sheet).
Please note: the P address may change each time the
controller is connected to the network.
Ensure that your internet-ready device is also connected
to the same network, then enter the P address into the
web browser on your internet-ready device. You will then
see the controller’s settings displayed on the device. You
can also change and save those settings.
Please note: for your security the settings are password
protected. The default username is ‘admin’ the password is
‘icontrol’. You can change these if you wish, and the
password can be reset to ‘icontrol’ via the push button
menu system should you forget your own password (see
the Menu Guide sheet).
Accessing the SmartControl 8 from outside the
local area network (LAN)
To do this you must have the controller connected to your
network via a wireless router or wireless bridge (not
supplied). You may need to change settings on your router
and firewall to allow port forwarding. Please ask your
internet service provider or router manufacturer to
explain how to open port 80 to allow port forwarding.
Always ensure that you keep your network secure - seek
advice from an T professional if you are in any doubt.
Once this is set up, you will be able to use your router’s
public P address in the address bar of your browser in
order to access the SmartControl 8 from anywhere in the
world, provided you have internet access.

Maintenance
Caution: To avoid possible electric shock, special care
should be taken when using this appliance near water.
Caution: Always isolate the PSU from the mains electricity
before carrying out any maintenance on your AquaRay set up.
The SmartControl 8 unit is not a customer serviceable part.
Caution: Do not attempt to open the plastic case of the
SmartControl 8 unit. This will invalidate the guarantee.
The SmartControl 8 unit should need little or no
maintenance once set up. However occasional cleaning may
be necessary. This can be done with a warm damp cloth.
Troubleshooting
Problem: The SmartControl 8 unit does not
switch on.
Solution: Check cable connection between PSU and controller.
Solution: Check power cord is firmly connected to PSU.
Solution: Check (and replace if necessary) the fuse in the
PSU’s power cord plug (UK only). f the controller still
does not switch on, return the unit to your local stockist
for further testing and replacement if necessary.
Problem: The SmartControl 8 unit does not
control the lamp units.
Solution: Check the connection between the lamp units
and the SmartControl 8 unit.

does not control the lamp units, return the unit to your local

Frequently Asked Questions
The SmartControl 8 unit has 8 outputs - can I
run less than 8 light units from it?
Yes, it is not a problem to use any number of lights up to the
maximum of 8 outputs.
What is the colour temperature of moonlight,
and how do I simulate this?
Light from the moon is actually just light from the sun that
is reflected back to the Earth. Moonlight is therefore the
same colour temperature as daylight, just not as bright.
The simplest way to simulate a moonlight photoperiod is
to set any or all of the channels of your SmartControl 8
unit to ramp down from full power to 5% or 10%
overnight, before ramping up again at sunrise. With 4
channels timed separately, the SmartControl 8 offers the
flexibility to have a moonlight phase for viewing in the
evening before switching off the lights completely later on.
My lights appear to dim very slowly at first,
then suddenly appear dimmer very quickly -
why is this?
This is because the human eye does not register small
differences in brightness until overall light levels drop below
approximately 40% of “normal” brightness. At sunset, for
example, it does not appear to be getting darker until dusk
when light levels reach around 40% of full daylight, and then it
seems to get dark quite suddenly.
Useful Tip: the shorter the ramp down period, the more
noticeable this effect will be. To minimise the appearance of
sudden dimming, set your SmartControl 8 unit to ramp down
over a longer period of time.

Installation
Afin de garantir l’évacuation de l’eau (si l’appareil est
accidentellement éclaboussé), montez l’appareil sur une surface
verticale à l’aide des vis fournies avec le kit de fixation. l suffit de
les introduire dans les fentes en trou de serrure situées au dos de
l’appareil.
Des patins adhésifs sont fournis avec le kit de fixation ;
positionnez-les dans les creux circulaires au dos de l’appareil pour
éviter qu’il laisse des marques sur le mur.
Lors du montage de l’appareil SmartControl 8, veillez à garder
suffisamment d’espace au-dessous pour connecter le bloc
d’alimentation et les lampes.
Une fois que l’appareil est en place, connectez les lampes et le
capteur de température (si utilisé) au SmartControl 8 en les
branchant dans les prises correspondantes sur l’appareil.
Remarque: Les canaux 1, 2, 3 et 4 sont tous contrôlés
indépendamment les uns des autres.
Branchez le bloc d’alimentation dans l’entrée de l’appareil
SmartControl 8.

Dès que le contrôleur accède au mode « RUN » (MARCHE)
(c’est-à-dire lorsque l’horloge s’affiche), vous pouvez programmer
l’appareil comme indiqué ci-dessous :
• Appuyez sur la touche ENTER (VAL DER) pour parcourir les
options du menu (voir la Fiche du menu fournie). Si vous
n’appuyez sur aucune touche dans les 10 secondes, l’appareil
SmartControl 8 retourne en mode « RUN ».
• Appuyez sur hen mode « RUN » pour faire défiler les modes
suivants : ON, OFF et AUTO. En mode ON (allumage), tous les
canaux sont activés à 100%, en mode OFF (extinction) tous les
canaux sont à 0 %, et le mode AUTO rétablit le programmé réglé
par l’utilisateur.
• Appuyez sur ien mode « RUN » pour lancer la fonction
«Storm » (Orage) (consultez ci-dessous les détails expliquant
cette fonction).
• Appuyer sur ialors que la fonction «Storm » est active permet
de quitter cette fonction et de rétablir le programme réglé par
l’utilisateur.
• Accédez au mode DEMO en appuyant sur la touche ENTER
pendant la mise en marche. L’affichage indique « DEMO »
En mode DEMO, les lampes s’allument et s’éteignent
progressivement en continu selon le programme suivant :
Éclairage à 100 % dans les 15 secondes
Diminution jusqu’à 5 % dans les 15 secondes
Fonction orage pendant 10 secondes
Éclairage à 100 % dans les 15 secondes
Diminution jusqu’à 5 % dans les 15 secondes
L’appareil quitte le mode démo et rétablit le programme réglé
par l’utilisateur.
Configuration
• Commencez par régler l’heure à l’aide de la Fiche du menu
(sous T ME SETT NG, RÉGLAGE DE L’HEURE)
• Réglez les horaires pour chaque canal
• Les lampes commencent à s’allumer lorsque l’heure de mise en
marche (ON T ME) correspond à l’heure actuelle. Un temps
RAMP (de progression) de 1 équivaut à 1 minute avant que les
lampes atteignent leur luminosité totale.
• Les lampes commencent à s’éteindre lorsque l’heure d’extinction
(OFF T ME) correspond à l’heure actuelle.
• RAMP offre une plage de 1 à 240 (1 minute à 4 heures).

• Le réglage MAX LEV (N VEAU MAX.) permet de régler la
luminosité maximum de chaque canal sur un pourcentage.
• Le réglage M N LEV correspond au niveau minimum d’extinction
de chaque canal pendant la phase OFF (d’extinction).
Remarque: le niveau minimum ne peut pas dépasser le niveau
maximum. Sur OFF T ME (heure d’extinction), la luminosité des
unités doit diminuer, sur ON T ME (heure de mise en marche), la
luminosité doit augmenter.
Fonction Lune
Conseil utile : Certains frais de corail se synchronisent aux phases
de la lune.
Cette fonction peut être activée ou désactivée dans les réglages
divers. Elle reproduit les phases lunaires en faisant varier les
niveaux minimum d’éclairage du canal 4 sur un cycle de 30 jours.
Fonction Nuage
Conseil utile : La fonction Nuage permet de créer une ambiance
d’éclairage plus réaliste dans votre aquarium et peut aider à
empêcher le blanchiment des coraux par photo-inhibition.
Cette fonction peut être activée ou désactivée dans les réglages
divers et simule le passage des nuages au-dessus de l’aquarium en
atténuant et en éclaircissant la luminosité des canaux en séquence.
Les nuages passent de manière aléatoire (20 par heure) et
atténuent la luminosité de seulement 20 % maximum.
Fonction Tempête
Conseil utile : L’utilisation de la fonction tempête pendant la
réalisation d’un changement d’eau est connue pour déclencher un
comportement reproductif chez certaines espèces de poissons.
La fonction tempête s’active en appuyant sur une touche (voir la
section «Utilisation » ci-dessus), ou bien vous pouvez régler son
activation/désactivation afin de créer une tempête par jour à une
heure aléatoire.
Lorsque la fonction Tempête est déclenchée, la séquence suivante
se produit:
1. Les éclairages contrôlés AquaRay atténuent leur luminosité
jusqu’à 5 % sur une période de 5 minutes.

Pendant ce délai, « STORM << » s’affiche à l’écran afin
d’indiquer qu’une tempête approche.
2. Les éclairages contrôlés AquaRay simulent des éclairs en
clignotant à intervalles irréguliers sur une période de
30 minutes. Pendant ce délai, « STORM ϟ» s’affiche à l’écran
pour indiquer les éclairs en cours.
3. Les éclairages contrôlés AquaRay arrêtent de clignoter et
augmentent leur luminosité jusqu’au niveau programmé sur une
période de 5 minutes. Pendant ce délai, « STORM >> » s’affiche
à l’écran pour indiquer la fin d’une tempête.
4. Le programme réglé par l’utilisateur est rétabli.
AVERTISSEMENT : La fonction tempête implique le
clignotement des éclairages, qui peut être à l’origine de
convulsions chez certaines personnes souffrant d’épilepsie.
Capteur du niveau d’éclairage
Conseil utile : Utilisez ce capteur avec un accès internet à distance
pour vous assurer que vos éclairages, fonctionnent correctement.
nsérez le conducteur de lumière en fibre optique dans l’entrée
conducteur de lumière sur le contrôleur. Positionnez l’extrémité
du conducteur de lumière dotée d’une lentille dans la zone où
vous souhaitez surveiller les niveaux d’éclairage. Veillez à ce que les
éclairages soient au maximum avant d’utiliser le système de menu
pour accéder à L GHT CA ; sélectionnez YES pour étalonner le
niveau sur 100 %. Vous pourrez alors surveiller le niveau auquel se
trouvent vos éclairages. l est également possible de mesurer la
quantité de lumière qui atteint certaines zones de votre aquarium.
Utilisez L GHT CA pour étalonner selon la luminosité maximum
des éclairages en activant cette fonction lorsque la lentille du
conducteur de lumière se trouve près de la source de lumière. l
vous sera alors possible de mesurer le pourcentage de lumière à
divers endroits de l’aquarium en déplaçant la lentille.
Capteur de température
Conseil utile : Si votre aquarium est déjà équipé d’un
thermomètre/capteur de température, le capteur de température
SmartControl 8 peut alors être utilisé pour surveiller la
température de vos éclairages.

Pour utiliser le capteur de température, la sonde de température
doit être connectée au port COM sur contrôleur avant d’activer
l’alimentation. Dès que le capteur est branché et sous tension,

Master/Slave (Maître/Esclave)
Si vous souhaitez utiliser jusqu’à 4 appareils SmartControl 8
ensemble, il est possible de les raccorder en utilisant le câble de
connexion Master/Slave (Maître /Esclave) (disponible séparément,
non fourni). Ce câble se branche sur le port USB situé sur le
câble du capteur de température, vers le port COM de l’appareil
suivant. l est ensuite recommandé d’utiliser le système de menu
pour régler le premier contrôleur comme Master (Maître), le
second comme Slave1 (Esclave 1), le troisième comme Slave2 et le
quatrième comme Slave3. Tous les appareils suivent alors ce que
fait le contrôleur Master (Maître).
Contrôle 1-10
Le SmartControl 8 peut être raccordé à un contrôleur d’éclairage
externe ou à un ordinateur d’aquarium doté d’une sortie 1-10V et
adoptera un comportement esclave à partir de ce signal. Pour
activer ce mode, il suffit de naviguer dans le système de menu du
contrôleur et d’activer 1-10 V (ON). Les câbles de connexion vers
divers dispositifs sont vendus séparément. Si vous souhaitez
utiliser votre propre câble, connectez au niveau du connecteur
USB femelle de type A sur
le câble du capteur de
température, où la Broche
1 est 1-10 V et la Broche 4
est GND (MASSE) (voir le
schéma).
Tropical Marine Centre peut fournir un connecteur USB de type A
relié à une extrémité de câble libre à 2 conducteurs pour vous
assister dans cette tâche (fourni séparément). Contactez votre
revendeur local pour tout renseignement supplémentaire.

Version de micrologiciel
Vous pouvez consulter la version du micrologiciel exécuté sur le
contrôleur en parcourant les réglages divers (voir la Fiche du
menu).
Raccordement à un PC/Mac
l est possible de raccorder le SmartControl 8 directement à un
PC/Mac à l’aide d’un câble Ethernet cat 5 (non fourni). Branchez
une extrémité du câble dans le port Ethernet sur le PC/Mac et
l’autre extrémité dans le port LAN sur l’appareil SmartControl 8.
Attendez 10 secondes puis naviguez dans le système du menu sur
le SmartControl 8 pour consulter l’adresse P (voir la Fiche du
menu).
Remarque: l’adresse P peut changer chaque fois que le
contrôleur est connecté au réseau.
Si vous saisissez l’adresse P dans la barre d’adresse de votre
navigateur, les réglages du contrôleur s’affichent sur le dispositif.
Vous pouvez modifier ou enregistrer ces réglages.
Remarque: pour votre sécurité, les réglages sont protégés par
un mot de passe. Le nom d’utilisateur par défaut est « admin » et
le mot de passe « icontrol ». Vous pouvez les modifier si vous le
souhaitez et réinitialiser le mot de passe sur « icontrol » via le
système de menu à touche si vous oubliez votre mot de passe
(voir la Fiche du menu).
Connexion sans fil à un dispositif Wifi (PC, Mac,
tablette, smartphone)
l est possible de connecter le SmartControl 8 directement à un
réseau sans fil à l’aide d’un câble Ethernet cat 5 et d’un routeur
sans fil ou une passerelle sans fil (non fournis).

Branchez une extrémité du câble ethernet cat 5 dans le port
Ethernet sur le routeur/la passerelle sans fil et l’autre extrémité
dans le port LAN sur l’appareil SmartControl 8.
Attendez 10 secondes puis naviguez dans le système du menu sur
le SmartControl 8 pour consulter l’adresse P (voir la Fiche

Accès au SmartControl 8 depuis l’extérieur du
réseau local LAN
Pour obtenir cet accès, le contrôleur doit être connecté au réseau
via un routeur sans fil ou une passerelle sans fil (non fournis). l
vous faudra peut-être modifier les réglages sur votre routeur et
pare-feu pour permettre le transfert de port. Veuillez demander à
votre fournisseur de services nternet ou au fabricant du routeur
de vous expliquer comment ouvrir le port 80 afin d’autoriser le
transfert de port. Veillez à garantir la sécurité de votre réseau à
tout moment ; demandez l’aide d’un professionnel de
l’informatique si vous avez le moindre doute.
Une fois que cette tâche est réalisée, vous pourrez utiliser
l’adresse P publique de votre routeur dans la barre d’adresse de
votre navigateur afin d’accéder au SmartControl 8 depuis
n’importe où dans le monde, pourvu que vous ayez accès
à nternet.
