FingerChip™Demonstrator FCDEMO4 USB/EPP
Description
Congratulations for choosing FingerChip™technology!
FingerChip™is the best choice for fingerprint capture. No other technology offers such
a small device with superior capture capabilities at such a low cost.
With the USB or parallel reader FCDEMO4, the user will be able to:
• Capture a fingerprint image.
• Evaluate the characteristics of FingerChip™technology using the AT77C101B
device (500 dpi sensor, 8-bit digital output).
This document describes how to install the device, and provides all electrical and
mechanical schematics. If you have the electronic version of the present document,
you will need the associated CAD files in order to get all the details.
Requirements
• USB Version FCSWEEP05: one PC running Windows 98®/Windows 2000®with
one USB v1.1 compliant port. Note that Windows 2000®is supported from release
V12.00 or later of the accompanying software.
• EPP Version FCSWEEP04: one PC running Windows 95®or later with one EPP
(Enhanced Parallel Port) + PS2 port (used only for power supply). Windows 2000®
is not supported.

Software
Installation The user will either need the accompanying CDROM, which contains all the programs and
documentation, or the zip file downloaded from our web site or received by email. In the latter
case, not all the files are included in order to reduce the size of the zip file for easier
downloading.
Windows 98 USB Important remark: the USB version of the FCDEMO4 device uses the same schematics and
USB interface chip as the Sweepee Genesys device. It also uses the same software.
• Insert the Sweepee Installation CDROM first: this will install the driver (if the user plugs
the device in first, Windows will ask for the driver: in this case, you can find the driver in the
“driver” directory of the CDROM).
• Run the setup program and follow the accompanying instructions (see the installation
document on the CDROM). If asked, choose Sweepee Genesys in the list.
• Plug the FCdemo into a USB socket of the computer.
• The activity LED will light up and the USB P&P String is displayed: Windows loads the
driver.
Windows 98 EPP • Plug the FCdemo into the parallel and PS2 sockets of your computer.
• Insert the Sweepee Installation CDROM.
• Choose EPP.
Once the installation program is finished, the user can run one of the imaging programs to
check out the device.
Uninstalling Please follow the instructions described in the installation document on the CDROM.
Software
Description
Only the acquisition and reconstruction software is provided. Atmel does not directly provide
authentication software. Please contact Atmel to get authentication software from one of our
FingerChip™Partners.
Imaging software has been installed during the installation procedure. Please read the accom-
panying document that describes the software included on the CDROM.
Hardware Parameters: there is no specific need to adjust the hardware parameters since the
default parameters are usually OK. Refer to the documentation to adjust the parameters if
needed.

Hardware Note that both the USB and EPP versions use the same printed circuit board and packaging.
Only the connector and the bill of materials differ.
CAD Files If the user gets the electronic version of this document accompanied by CAD files, he will be
able to get detailed information on the mechanical and board specifications.
The user needs Cadstar or Cadstar Design Viewer to see the electrical schematic and printed
circuit board files. This viewer is free and can be downloaded from Cadstar’s web site:
http://www.cadstarworld.com.
The user either needs Autocad, Solidworks or Solidworks viewer to see the mechanical files.
This viewer is free and can be downloaded from Solidworks’ web site:
http://www.solidworks.com.

Note that the most difficult point for the plastic design is located near the FingerChip™. The
user must ensure that the finger will touch the FingerChip™: avoid having the silicon part in a
“hole;” it is better to have the FingerChip™a little bit ABOVE the plastic than the reverse. If not,
the skin will not touch the sensor, and the image acquisition will be degraded or impossible.
The thickness of the silicon is 800 microns. The thickness of the plastic piece that comes close
to the silicon is 500 microns, and its shape is not “square”.
