ed on. To prevent engine damage, please observe
the following notes about the temperat ure rang-
es.
Cold range
If only the LEDsat the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem-
perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full ac-
celerating and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera -
ture once the LEDsup to the center of the gauge
turn on. If the . indicator light in the inst ru-
ment cluster displayturns on, the coolant tem-
perature is too high ¢ page 14.
(D Note
- Auxiliary headlig hts and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair t he
cooling effect of t he coolant .This increases
t he risk of th eengi ne overheating during
high outside tempera tur esand heavy en-
gine load.
9

Instruments and indicator lights
- The front spoiler also he lps to distr ibute
cooling air while driving . If the spoiler is
damaged, the cooling effect will be im-
paired and the risk of the engine overheat-
ing will increase. See an author ized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for
ass istance.
(D Tips
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engines
Due to the high eff iciency of these engines,
the engine may not always reac h opera ti ng
tem perature in cold outside tempe ratur es.
This is normal and not a cause for con cern .
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev-
olutions per minute (RPM).
You shou ld shift to the next lowest gea r whe n
the speed is below 1,S00 RPM. The begin ning of
the red zone in the tachome ter ind icates the
maximum permissible engine speed for all gea rs
once the engine has been bro ken in and when it is
warmed up to operating temperature . Before
reaching the red zone, you should shift into the
next higher gea r, choose the Dor S selecto r lever
position, or remove your foot from the accelera-
tor pedal.
CDNote
The needle in the tachometer @ c>page 9,
fig. 3 may only be in the red area of the gauge
for a short time or the re is a risk of engine
damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early helps you to save fuel and re-
duce operating noise.
(D Tips
Applies to: S models
The engine speed is limit ed when the eng ine
is cold - the full engine outp ut is not availa-
ble. When t he engi ne is at ope rating temper-
at ure, the red area in the tachome ter move s
to a higher RPM range.
10
· Fuel level
The display @ on ly wor ks when the ignit ion is
switc hed on. If t he fue l level drops below 2.6 gal
(10 L), a red LEDwill t urn on and t he HJindica-
tor light will turn on i=>page18 . The LEDblinks
red when the fue l level is very low.
The poss ible range base d on t he current fue l lev-
el is shown in tab @ ¢ page 21, fig. 4.
For t he tank capacity in your veh icle, refe r to the
Techn ical Data c>page 257.
CDNote
Never drive until t he tank is complete ly em p-
ty. The irregu lar su pply of fuel that res ults
from that can cause engine misfires. Uncom-
buste d fue l will t hen en ter t he exhaust sys-
tem . This can cause overheating and damage
to the catalyt ic converter .
Indicator Lights
· Description
The ind icator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or tur n on. They indicate fu nctions or mal-
funct ions.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights.
Awar ning signal will sound at the same time.
The ind icator lights and messages in the instru-
ment cluster disp lay can be covered by ot her dis-
plays. To show them again, se lect the tab for in-
dicator lights and messages using the mu ltifu nc-
tion steering whee l c>page 21. If there are sev-
eral ma lfunctions, you can display them one at a
time using the thumbwheel.
Some indicator lights in the display can disp lay in
severa l colors .
Central indicator light
Applies to: vehicles with monochrome display
If a message appears together with a central in-
dicator light . or U.the centra l ind icator light
will indicate the priority of the warning. If a
