Intended Use
The Bannon 5500 Lb. Capacity Pallet Jack with Hand Brake is designed for transportation of loads
with a level, attached base and may be used only on a firm and even surface, such as concrete or
asphalt. The load must be on evenly distributed pallets, with the ideal loading mode such that the
center of gravity of the load is at the central position of the fork. With the braking device, the walking
speed can be controlled at will on decline ramps and temporary stops are a possibility on incline
gradients.

Assembling the Handle
1. Insert the base of the handle into the pump bracket (Figure 1). Align the holes at the base of the
handle with the holes in the pump bracket.
2. Use a hammer to tap the handle pin into the holes of the pump bracket and handle (Figure 2).
Use pliers to turn the handle pin until its holes align with the spring pin holes.

3. Feed the screw head through the center hole in the handle pin (Figure 3). Using a screwdriver,
pry up the cam and slip the screw head under the notch in the cam.
4. Use a hammer to tap the spring pins (Figure 2) into the holes on the pump bracket and handle
pin.
5. Tap out the pump retainer pin (Figure 1).
Note: It’s a good idea to remove any air bubbles that might have accumulated in the hydraulic system
during shipping. Refer to ''Bleeding the Air'' in the maintenance table.
Assembling the Braking Device
1. After installing the handle, press Lock 1 to loosen it and put Handle Knob 2 in its lowest position
(Figure 4, following page).
2. Unscrew Screw 6, put Braking Wire 3 through holes in Shafts 4 and 5 and tense it in the indicated
direction. Put back screw 6 and complete the installation by tightening it.
3. Brake sensitivity can be adjusted with Hollow Screw 7. For large free strokes of the braking
handle knob, or if poor braking is experienced, slowly turn Hollow Screw 7 counter-clockwise
(adjust Screw 7 in a downward direction). Or, if the free stroke of the braking is too small or too
much force is felt with an unloaded pallet jack, Hollow Screw 7 should be turned slowly in a
clockwise direction (adjust Screw 7 in upward direction). Loosen Nut 8 before these adjustments
and tighten again when the adjustment is over.

Operating Instructions
⚠WARNING
To avoid serious bodily injury or death, and/or property damage, do not exceed the rated load
capacity.
When not in use, do not allow heavy loads to remain on the fork for an extended period of time.
Always lower the fork completely when not in use.
Note: The numbers in parentheses refer to part numbers in the part breakdown table.
This pallet jack is designed for use with open style pallets or skids only. Closed style pallets must be
placed on top of fork prior to use.
1. Insert the fork into the pallet.
2. To raise the fork, push the control lever all the way down and pump the handle until the desired
fork height is reached.
3. To move the handle without affecting the fork setting, set the control lever in the center neutral
position. The load can now be pushed or pulled using the handle.
4. To lower the fork, pull the lever all the way up. Allow the load to descend slowly in a controlled
manner. The lever is spring-loaded and will return to the neutral position when released.

Adjusting the Control Handle: 3 Positions
On the Handle (1) of this pallet jack, you can find the Control Lever (10), which can be placed in three
positions (Figure 5):
LOWER - to lower load, pull up on the control lever.
NEUTRAL - place the control lever in this position while pulling the pallet jack or load.
LIFT - to raise the load, push down on the control lever and pump the handle to raise the load.
Figure 5
Note: These three positions have been set at the factory to work appropriately as soon as the
handle is attached. However, if the forks do not raise or lower as expected, adjust the control
positions using the following instructions. (See Figure 6 on the following page.)
1. The Socket Head Cap Screw (33) is designed to adjust the three control positions. Use a
wrench and a flat screwdriver to loosen the Hex Nut (32) and turn the Socket Head Cap
Screw (33) clockwise, or counter-clockwise. Check to see if the pallet jack works well in the
three control positions. If more adjustments are necessary, proceed to the following steps.
2. Place the control handle in the "Neutral" position. If the fork frame does not rise when you
pump the pallet jack, skip to step 5. If the fork frame does rise when you pump the pallet
jack, turn the Socket Head Cap Screw (33) CLOCKWISE until the fork frame does not rise.
3. Keep the control handle in the "Neutral" position. If the fork frame does not move when the
handle is pumped, skip to step 4 without any adjustment. If the fork frame lowers, turn the
Socket Head Cap Screw (33) COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until the fork frame does not lower.
4. Pull the Control Lever (10) upward to the "Lower" position. If the fork frame lowers, skip to
step 5 without any adjustment. If the fork frame does not lower, turn the Socket Head Cap
Screw (33) CLOCKWISE again until the fork frame lowers.

5. Push the Control Lever (10) down to the "Lift" position. If the fork frame elevates when you
pump the pallet jack, go back and check steps 1 to 3 until the pallet jack can work well in all
three control positions. If the fork frame does not elevate, turn the Socket Head Cap Screw
(33) COUNTER-CLOCKWISE again until the fork frame elevates. Repeat steps 1 through 3
until the pallet jack works in all three control positions.
Figure 6
Maintenance
Maintain the product by adopting a program of conscientious repair and maintenance in accordance
with the following recommended procedures. It is recommended that the general condition of any tool
be examined before it is used. Keep your tool in good repair. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from
oil and grease. The following chart is based on a normal operation schedule.
Maintenance Interval
Maintenance Point
Daily before operating
Daily inspection and maintenance of the pallet jack is required,
especially for the wheels and the axles. Remove the thread or
rags on the wheel or axle if any are detected. Unload and
lower the forks to the lowest position after every job is finished.

Maintenance Interval
Maintenance Point
Before and after operating
OIL. Check the oil level annually by removing the Oil Plug (70)
on top of the pump housing. When changing or adding oil, fill
the tank through the oil plug hole to 80% capacity with
hydraulic jack oil, about 2-1/2" deep in the pump housing
(Figure 7). Do not use any other type of oil. When finished,
replace the Oil Plug (70).
Figure7
LUBRICATION. Wheel bearings are sealed and require no
lubrication. The crankshaft features "oil lite" bushings that also
require no lubrication.
Lightly oil all other moving parts.
BLEEDING THE AIR. There may be times when the forks do
not rise while pumping when in the "Lift" position. Most likely
this is because air has been introduced in to the hydraulic
system. The air can be removed by moving the control handle
to the "Lower" position, then pumping the handle up and down
several times. Repeat this process until the forks lift as
intended.
SEAL AND O-RING REPLACEMENT FOR RAM AND
PLUNGER PISTON
Raise the pallet jack by pumping handle.
Remove spring pin (22). This will free the pump and
handle assembly from the pallet jack.
Remove the oil plug (70), turn pump over and empty the
oil into a suitable container. Pump handle until all oil has
drained. Dispose of used hydraulic oil according to local
disposal regulations.
Pull out the plunger piston (82) and/or ram piston (72).
Remove all O-rings and seals. See Fig. 8.
Insert the new O-ring or seal one at a time making sure to
replace with the same size that was removed.
Reassemble and fill the oil tank through the oil plug hole to
80% capacity with new hydraulic jack oil, about 2-1/2"
deep in pump housing. See Fig. 8.

UP-DOWN CAM ADJUSTMENT
When pumping the handle with the lever in the neutral
position, there should be no movement of the fork. If there is
fork movement, the cam must be adjusted:
Place lever in neutral position.
Loosen the hex nut (32).
Adjust the socket head cap screw (33) while pumping
the handle, until there is no longer any movement of
the ram.
Tighten the hex nut (32).
