Barco’s OPScenter
Airport Display Solutions
in the fi eld
• EADS: Approach Control for German Air Force
Barco provided radar data processing and display components for the Airport
Surveillance Radar System (ASR-E) of the German Air Force. Among other functions,
Barco added electronic fl ight strips to the ASR-E system, which offer operators a swift
and user-friendly overview of the fl ight plan status. Barco paid special attention to
maintainability, advanced self-testing capabilities and modular design.
• Belgocontrol: Radar Fallback System
Barco provided the OPScenter display component to Belgocontrol to be used as an
independent radar fallback system. This integration was one of the most important
updates of the new system architecture for the technical upgrade of Belgocontrol’s
CANAC center. The system includes Multi-Track correlation, Callsign association,
integrated recording & playback, System Monitoring, Control & Failover (SMCF), radar
data distributrion, as well as sector management.
• Inverness Airport: Radar Display System
In 2006, Barco was contracted by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) to
provide a COTS ATC display system for Inverness Airport. Barco integrated its OPScenter
components into the Inverness ATM system, which is connected to a primary and
a secondary radar. Barco’s display system includes plot extraction from raw primary
video, the integration of a multi-sensor tracker for tracking of primary and secondary
plots, Safety Net as well as recording & playback functionality.

High-performance
visualization components
for airport environments
For many years now, Barco’s
OPScenter visualization components
have built operational display
systems from sensor to display.
With the new OPScenter AIRPORT
DISPLAY SOLUTIONS, the leader in ATC
visualization now offers airports a
cost-efficient all-in-one package
for the Controller Working Positions
of today. Designed for small to
medium-sized airports, Barco’s
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS
offer modular COTS hardware
and software building blocks
for integration into your specific
operator positions.
High-performance traffic visualization
Barco’s OPScenter visualizes air surveillance situations with a high number of dynamic
flight objects, and optionally combines that with radar video overlay. It merges a wide
variety of external information, such as map, weather and flight plan data. OPScenter
AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS make extensive use of Barco’s commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
products for networked operational display systems. One of these products is Barco’s
ODS TOOLBOX development kit, which has supported the integration of more than 3,500
operational working positions worldwide.
Proven COTS building blocks
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS present an exceptional combination of cost-efficiency
and reliability. Barco’s proven OPScenter software and hardware components have been
specifically developed for operational ATC systems and are combined with standard
industry hardware. This approach retains the flexibility to configure the operational
display software according to your specific requirements. Furthermore, OPScenter
AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS easily integrate into your system environment with the least
possible effort.
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS in a nutshell:
A standard all-in-one package
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS provide a complete package of visualization
components from sensor to display. Next to a full range of software components,
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS also offer a selection of server hardware and display
monitors in a wide variety of sizes and resolutions. Furthermore, Barco will integrate all
necessary network hardware and manage the complete project from on-site installation
to Site Acceptance Testing. Barco’s extensive training and customer services complete
this offering.
A full range of options
Optionally, OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS can be complemented with specific
features and functionality, such as OpenGL, electronic flight strips or a user role/access
module, which controls user-dependent functionality of working positions.
Customer-specific HMI solutions
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS come with dedicated display application software,
which can easily be configured to meet your specific HMI needs.
OPScenter building blocks
• Display
The OPScenter display component provides ready-made display components which
are ideally suited for the visualization of complex traffic situations and simulations.
OPScenter supports raw video (radar scan conversion), multi-format map presentation,
multi-layer display, track display and interaction, electronic flight strips, online drawing,
recording and playback, and 3D OpenGL.
• Sensor interfacing & processing
The sensor interfacing and processing component includes standardized interfaces for
radar data acquisition and processing from all common radar sources. Be it a Radar
Video Network for sensor data acquisition and distribution via LAN/WAN, or dedicated
sensor processing components such as a Radar Extractor/Tracker or a Multi Sensor
Tracker - OPScenter has the answer.
• Central data services
The OPScenter data services component handles the administration of the system’s
data flow for better data distribution and consistency. This component offers support
for high- and low-level data, for object-oriented and stream data, as well as for point-
to-point and broadcast communications.
• Simulation and training
OPScenter’s simulation and training component has been designed to simulate
air traffic in a simple, yet efficient manner. The simulator generates sensor
measurements and related flight data, such as radar or tracker data. Thanks to the
possibility to simulate a large number of aircraft, even complex traffic scenarios
can be created. As such, OPScenter supports system tests, evaluation of possible
operational improvements and air traffic controller training sessions, for instance
by exercises based on real traffic scenarios recorded from operational situations. To
provide realistic models of aircraft flight dynamics, the OPScenter simulation and
training component can be enhanced with a trajectory prediction engine, which is
part of Barco’s OSYRIS Arrival Manager.
• Safety Net
The OPScenter Safety Net component supports the detection of air traffic conflicts.
Safety Net functions include Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA) within configurable
look-ahead times, tailored to small and medium-sized airports, Area Proximity
Warning (APW), and Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW). The heart of Safety
Net is a Conflict Detection Engine that continuously analyses the traffic situation and
calculates various conflict types for all traffic objects.
• Interface components
OPScenter offers interfaces to most common external systems, including radar data
processing systems (ASTERIX), weather and NOTAM information systems, database
systems and data exchange between centers.
• Recording and playback
The OPScenter recording and playback component supports various types of
recording and playback, including data stream recording (especially ASTERIX), raw
video, X11, and OpenGL recording. OPScenter, which makes use of TELLAR, Barco’s
proven display recording software, also offers the option of voice recording and
voice-playback synchronization.
• System management
With the OPScenter system management component, Barco offers a tool for complete
system control at the highest technological level: System Monitoring, Control, and
Failover (SMCF). The OPScenter system management component provides a user
interface for the visualization, supervision and control of all hardware and software
within a heterogeneous environment. Next to the manual intervention possibilities,
the SMCF system reacts on either hardware or software failures, automatically
restarting failed processes and peripherals and moving processes from one host
to another.
• Service components
On customer demand, Barco’s OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS can be extended
with additional functionality, such as user role/access management.

OPScenter’s open and modular software architecture is characterized by functional
building blocks. This approach allows you to build or upgrade your system step
by step and makes your system ready for future technology developments.
From standalone systems to fully fledged networked visualization, choosing
OPScenter AIRPORT DISPLAY SOLUTIONS is the most cost-efficient approach to accomplish
your operational display system.
