3Installation
3.1 Voltagesupply
Thedeviceissuppliedwith24VDCviathe plug-inpowersupplyunitincludedindelivery.
3.2 ConnectiontothePC
The device can be connected to the PC either via the serial interface of the PC or via the keyboard in-
terface. The appropriate interface type is determined by the connecting cable in the barcode reader.
Tochangetheinterfacetype,thecablecanbereplaced(see3.3).
3.2.1 ConnectionviaRS232
The device is connected to the PC via the RS 232 with a 9-pole cable. If the serial interface of the PC
is25-pole,anappropriateadapterplughastobeused.

3.2.2 Connectionviakeyboardinterface
If it is connected via the keyboard interface, the barcode reader is inserted between the PC and the
keyboard.XT/ATplugsor PS/2plugsareavailable.
3.3 Replaceconnectingcable
Tochange the interfacetype ofthe barcode reader, the connecting cable has to be replaced (for con-
nectingcabletypesseeorderingdesignations).
Cautiously insert a thin stiff wire (e.g. a paper clip that has been straightened out) into the opening at
theundersideof thehousingand pushbackthelock oftheinterface cable.Atthe sametime drawthe
cableoutoftheoutletbox.
Pluginthenewcableuntilitsnapsintoplace.
Aftertheinterfacecablehasbeenreplaced,thedevicehastobereinitialized(see4.2and4.3).

4Operation
4.1 Configurationoftheterminalprogram
After the configuration of the reader and of the application program, you can read in the barcodes via
theserialinterface.Theconfigurationof theapplicationprogram isexplainedherewith theexampleof
the”HyperTerminal“program,whichisincludedinthestandardWindowsversion.
•Click“Start“andthenclick“Perform“.
•Inthe“Perform”window,typetheprogramnamehypertrmandclick[OK]orpressENTER.
•Enteranameforthenewconnectioninthefollowingwindow,selectaniconandclick[OK].
•On the “Connect via“ list box in the following window, select the serial interface by means of
whichyouhaveconnectedthebarcodereadertothePC.

•Thenconfiguretheinterfaceaccordingtothefollowingillustration.
Now the program is installed. From now on you can start the program with a double-click on the icon
youhaveselected.Itisinthefolderc:\programs\accessories\HyperTerminal.
Youcanalsoshifttheicontothedesktopandstarttheprogramdirectlyfromthere.

4.2 Configuration(initialization)fordeviceswith
RS232interface
1. Attachthetwofollowingbarcodetagstoamilksamplebottle.
Youcancopysheet1intheappendix,cutoutthetagsandstickthemtothebottle.
2. Disconnect the device from its power supply for 5-10 seconds by pulling out the power supply
plugofthedeviceforashorttimeandthenpluggingitinagain.
3. Putbothofthebottleswiththeconfigurationtagssuccessivelyintotheshaft.
Thebarcodehastoberead.Thedeviceacknowledgesthiswithacousticsignals.
4. ConnectthedevicetoaPC,unlessithasalreadybeenconnected.
5. CallaterminalprogramatthePC,e.g.Hyperterminal.
Configuretheterminalprogram:
RegulateCOMinterfacethattheinterfaceispluggedinto(mostlyCOM1orCOM2).
Configure interface parameters (9600 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no handshaking).
6. Enterthefollowingcharacterstring(Reset):

7. Waitforashorttimeuntilthedevicehasacknowledgedthecommandwithanacousticsignal.
8. Enterthefollowingcharacterstring(barcodeconfiguration):
$+AZ0AC111010$-[Enter]
9. Waitforashorttimeuntilthedevicehasacknowledged thecommand withanacousticsignal.
10. Takethebottlewiththeconfigurationstagoutofthedevice.
Theconfigurationiscompletednow.
11. For testing, put a “normal“ milk sample bottle into the device. The barcode should be read and
displayedonthescreennow.

1. Attachthetwofollowingbarcodetagstomilksamplebottles.
Youcancopysheet2intheappendix,cutoutthetagsandstickthemtothebottles.
Ateachcase,youneedonebarcodetagwiththenumbersfrom1to10.
Selecttheappropriatekeyboard option.
2. Disconnect the device from its power supply for 5-10 seconds by pulling out the power supply
plugofthedeviceforashorttimeandthenpluggingitinagain.
3. Putthebottlewithtagno.1intotheshaft.
Thebarcodehastobereadinnow.Thedeviceacknowledgesthiswithanacousticsignal.

5. Takethelastbottleoutofthedevice.Theconfigurationiscompletednow.
6. For testing, start your application or an editor (e.g. notepad). Put a ”normal“ milk sample bottle
intothedevice.Thebarcodeshouldbereadanddisplayedonthescreennow.
4.4 Readbarcodes
To read the barcodes, put the sample bottle into the shaft. The barcode is read and displayed on the
screenoritistransmittedviatheinterface.
The number of revolutions before a bottle is read doesn´t allow any conclusions as to the quality of
thebarcodetag.Duetothesystem,thenumberof revolutionscanvarybetween1and 5revolutions. It
dependsonthemechanicstabilizationofthebottleafterithasbeeninsertedintotheshaft.
If there is an error (e.g. a readable barcode in proper working condition is not read or is not transmit-
tedtothePC),thedevicehastobereinitializeddependingonthedevicetype(see4.2or4.3).
