The bhi Radio Mate compact keypad for the Yaesu FT817, FT857 and FT897 enables many of the radios
common functions to be used more quickly and easily, taking the hassle out
of using the radio. It does this by means of an external 16-button keypad and
control unit.
The Radio Mate has three basic operating modes: Modulation, Direct
Frequency Entry and Memory. Each mode is accessed by a dedicated button
on the right of the keypad. An LED changes colour to show the current
operating mode. Pressing the Mod (Modulation) button lets you immediately
select or change the modulation type, and all nine are supported – CW, USB,
LSB, FM, AM, CWR, Packet, Digital and FM Narrow (FT817 does not support
FM Narrow mode). The Radio Mate also
has a Tune mode, causing the radio to
switch to FM on the current frequency
setting, and transmit for up to 10 seconds.
Pressing the a/b button instantly swaps the
VFO A and B, holding the button down
makes VFO B = VFO A, and split VFO mode
is enabled by pressing the CLR button. The
Radio Mate VFO functions enable the radios
A, B & C buttons to be freed up for other
functions.

A small rubber foot is included to enable the keypad to be used by blind and
partially sighted operators more easily.
Mounted on a sturdy black anodized aluminium plate, the keypad simply
connects to the radios ACC socket by means of a 1 metre mini din plug lead.
There is an on/off switch on the side of the unit, and the keypad has large
clear buttons, with the membrane keys being slightly recessed for ease of
use.
