1. Planning and installation
When selecting the location for and erecting the Biolan Easylett, it
isessentialtoprovidesufcientspaceforuseandmaintenanceof
the toilet, to route the ventilation pipe without any bends through
the roof of the building over the ridge and to locate the seep liquid
canister in a suitable place. See the dimension drawing for the toilet
unit (page 2).

2. Before installation
Make sure that the air channel (part 4) inside the body is still in
place after transportation. The channel must rest on the sill on the
inside wall of the tank so that the inlet air grate (part 10) at the side
ofthebodywillallowunobstructedairowintotheairchannel.The
air inlet valve cannot be adjusted. Make sure that the gasket (part
3) is in place in the top (part 2). Keep the protective cap for the seep
liquid canister (part 15) and use it during emptying of the canister.
3. Installation in the toilet building
The Biolan Easylett is installed under the seat top of an existing
toilet building. Level out the base so that the distance between the
base and the seat top will be 86–90 cm. The base must be level
across the entire length (113 cm) of the evaporating pan (part 11).
Install the ventilation channel (part 7) in place inside the body. (See
Fig. 1.) Put the top of the body (part 3) in place. Place the body in
its place on top of the evaporating pan (part 11), at the end oppo-
site to the seep liquid removal hole. By help of the evaporating pan
and the body, test that the distance between the base and the seat
top is correct. The gasket (part 2) in the Easylett's top must press
against the lower surface of the seat top. Make sure that the open-
ing in the Easylett's top fully aligns with the opening in the seat top.
Connect the seep liquid pipe (part 14) to the lead-through rubber
(part 9) at the end of the evaporating pan (part 11). Route the pipe
into the canister (part 15). Bury the canister in the ground, or place
itsomeotherwaysothattheseepliquidowsbygravitationinto
the canister.
Wherenecessary,theventilationpipecanbeextendedusingsew-

a sealing ring for joining up the pipes. If the seep liquid canister is
difcult to bury, you can replace it with a smaller canister. If you
want, you can lay the seep liquid canister on its side.
Using the connecting sleeves (part 19), join up the 1 m-long ventila-
tion pipes (part 17) that point up from the ventilation channel (part
7), and support them on the wall by means of the pipe brackets
(part 20). Install a connecting sleeve with a cap for the outlet air
(part 21) in the end of the topmost ventilation pipe. As necessary,
you can cut off the ventilation pipes. Ensure, however, that the ven-
tilation pipe will reach above the roof ridge of the toilet building.
Install the evaporating pan cover into place. Install the 0.46 m-long
ventilation pipe (part 16) in place and connect it with the ventilation
channel (part 7) by means of the connecting sleeve (part 19). Lock
the pipe in position by inserting the locking stud (part 18) in the
hole at the lower end of the pipe.

body.

cluded in the delivery.

4. Before use
Putalayerapproximately5cmthick(about20l)ofBiolanCompost
and Toilet Bulking Material, chips or coarse bark on the bottom of
the body to prevent the liquid removal holes from getting clogged.
Fill the evaporating pan with non-fertilised and non-limed peat
(such as e.g. Biolan Peat) or Biolan Compost and Toilet Bulking Ma-
terial, level with the highest notch. The compartment with the lead-
through for the seep liquid hose shall be left empty. Fill up tightly
the space below the body with bulking material up to the lower edge
of the emptying door.
5. Air channel in the toilet tank
Operation of the Biolan Easylett is very effective because of the air
channel (part 4) inside the toilet body. The channel brings the air
required by the compost to the centre of the compost mass – to the
layer where it is most needed. At the same time, the air channel
prevents the compost mass from packing on the bottom and keeps
the mass elevated during emptying. The air channel is visible at the
initial stage, but after that, it is virtually obscured by the mass all
the time.
6. What can be placed in the Easylett
toilet?
The Biolan Easylett is intended for composting toilet waste. Placing
kitchen waste in the Easylett is not recommended. Do not put into
the toilet anything that hampers the composting process or does
not compost, such as:
- debris, sanitary towels
- chemicals (incl. lime)
- detergents, washing water
- ash, cigarette butts, matches
7. Using bulking material
Everytimeafterthetoiletisused,applyapproximately0.2-0.5litres
of Biolan Compost and Toilet Bulking Material over the left mat-
ter. Note that bulking material must also be applied after urinating.
Applying suitable bulking material is essential for proper operation
of the toilet. We recommend using the Biolan Compost and Toilet
Bulking Material as bedding.
8. Year-round use of the Biolan
Easylett
A toilet, installed in a cold space, freezes during winter. Freezing
damages neither the unit nor the compost mass itself and the com-
posting process continues when the temperature rises. A toilet unit
located in a cold space can be used occasionally during winter.
9. To be observed if used in winter
If you plan to use the toilet continuously in winter, install the unit
in a warm space and also make sure that the liquid removal hose,
the seep liquid canister and the evaporating pan do not freeze. If
installing the toilet in a warm space indoors, insulate the ventilation
pipeofthetoiletwhereitruns throughcoldspaces,forexample,
in the intermediate roof space, to prevent condensation of water.
The toilet can be used occasionally in winter (= weekend use) even
if the unit is located in a cold space.
10. Emptying the Biolan Easylett
Remove the ventilation pipe (part 16), leaving from the evaporating
pan cover (part 12), and the evaporating pan cover. Place the emp-
tying trough (part 13) on the edge of the evaporating pan, below the
emptying door (part 5). Open and remove the emptying door. Using
a spade or the emptying aid (part 22), remove some mass from
theemptyingdoor. To enablean efcientuninterruptedcompost-
ing process, we recommend that no more than half of the mass be
discharged from the unit at a time. Do not empty the tank until it
hasbecomefullforthersttime.Thereisnoneedtowashthetoilet
tank internally when emptying it.
Toilet waste can be so tough that it does not drop down onto the
bottom of the toilet unit by itself after the emptying. If this is the
case, push the mass down using a sturdy stick or the emptying aid
(part 22). This is easiest to begin from the corners. Be careful not to
break the air channel (part 4) in the centre of the unit.
If the toilet is to be used only in summer, empty it in spring before
usingitforthersttime.Theemptyingprocessismostconvenient
and easiest at this stage.
Change peat/bulking material in the evaporating pan in spring be-
fore starting to use the toilet. The mass can be removed by means
of the emptying aid (part 22).
11. Emptying the seep liquid canister
Empty the seep liquid canister as required, however, at least once
a year. You can utilise the seep liquid, that is rich in nutrients, as
asourceofnitrogenforcompost.Thisintensiestheactivityofthe
garden compost in particular, which is poor in nutrients but rich in
carbon. This way, you do not have to dilute the seep liquid.
You can also use seep liquid as fertiliser for ornamental plants in
the yard and garden. A safe dilution ratio is 1:5. Undiluted seep
liquid can also be used, but then you must water the area carefully
after the application to avoid early blight.
Fertilising in the autumn is not recommended so as not to disturb
the preparation of perennial plants for winter. The recommended
storingtimefortheseepliquidbeforeuseas fertiliserisapproxi-
mately one year.

12.2 Moisture
When the composting process is at its most effective, it is normal
that the bottom surface of the seat ring lid is moist. However, if
there is a lot of moisture on the seat ring lid and on the sides of the
seat ring, something is wrong.
Normally the problem occurs in the air outlet system or in the liquid
separator system.
- make sure that the ventilation pipe (part 17) has not been
blocked.
- check that the ventilation pipe is routed from the toilet unit

and does not drop down by itself after the emptying.
