ELECTRICAL SAFETY STATEMENT
INSTRUCCIONES DE SEGURIDAD
1. Todas las instrucciones de seguridad y operación deberán ser leídas antes
de que el aparato eléctrico sea operado.
2. Las instrucciones de seguridad y operación deberán ser guardadas para
referencia futura.

2. Introduction
2.1 Description
The 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converter Plus
connects your twisted-pair Fast Ethernet to multimode
or single-mode fiber without adding to your repeater
count.
These converters are unique because they support Link
Fault Signaling (LFS) and Loopback (LBK). Link Fault
Signaling allows constant connectivity to the network by
diverting data transmission to a redundant link when a
breakdown or error exists anywhere along the fiberoptic
link. Loopback gives a network administrator instant
connectivity information from either the local or remote
side.
Available models include:
• LH1703A-ST: This model extends your Fast
Ethernet network up to 1.2 mi. (2 km) over
820-nm multimode fiberoptic cable via ST
connectors.

• LH1703A-SC: Choose this model to extend your
Fast Ethernet network up to 1.2 mi. (2 km) over
820-nm multimode fiberoptic cable using SC
connectors.
• LH1704A-SC: Use this converter to extend your
100-Mbps Ethernet network up to 9.3 mi. (15 km)
over 1310-nm single-mode fiberoptic cable via SC
connectors.
• LH1705A-SC: This converter is the same as the
LH1704A-SC, but it extends your network up to
twice the distance (18.6 mi. [30 km]).

3. Installation
3.1 MDI/MDI-X Connection
Before plugging in and installing your media converter,
you’ll need to set the MDI/MDI-X button. This button
selects whether you need to use crossover or straight-
through twisted-pair cabling to connect the RJ-45 ports
on the 100BASE-TX portion of your network. (See
Figure 3-1.) Simply set the button as described in
Table 3-1.

When the button is pressed in, MDI-X is selected. When the
button is out, MDI is selected.

3.2 DIP-Switch Setting
Once you’ve set the MDI/MDI-X button, you’ll need to
set the LFS/LBK switch. Use this ON/OFF DIP switch to
enable or disable Link Fault Signaling or Loopback Test.
See Figure 3-2 and Table 3-2.

Switch Setting Description
Link Fault Signaling (LFS) ON Enables Link Fault Signaling mode. Set
the LFS switch ON when a redundant link
configuration exists.
OFF Disables Link Fault Signaling mode. Set
the LFS switch OFF when a redundant
link configuration does not exist.
Loopback (LBK) ON Enables Loopback Test mode. Set the
LFS switch ON to determine if there are
any connectivity problems in the cable.
OFF Disables Loopback Test mode. Set the
LFS switch OFF when connectivity
problems do not exist.

3.3 Typical Applications
Once you’ve set the MDI/MDI-X button and the
LFS/LBK DIP switch, you’ll need to determine which
application you’ll use. See Figures 3-3 through 3-5.

CHAPTER 3: Installation
3.4 Installing the Converter
After you set the MDI/MDI-X button as described in
Section 3.1, set the LFS/LBK DIP switch as explained in
Section 3.2, and determine how you will use your
converter as shown in Section 3.3, you’ll need to place
the converter on a desktop or mount it on a wall. Next,
power on the converter. Connect the converter to a
100BASE-TX device or network segment. Finally,
connect the converter to a 100BASE-FX device or to
another media converter via fiberoptic cable. Follow the
steps listed below:
1. For desktop installation, affix the four non-skid
rubber feet to the bottom of the converter.
For wallmount installation, use the underside of
the converter as a template to measure and mark
out the position of the holes onto the surface
where you will install the converter. Then use the
two mounting screws provided to mount the
converter firmly in place.
2. Connect the appropriate power supply for your
country to the power connector on the side of the
converter. Plug the power supply into a suitable
power outlet.
