QUICK REFERENCE FOR
BLADDER VOLUME
BVI 6400
1. If the device is in sleep mode, press any button. The
instrument turns on.
2. Press the top button in order to enable or disable
female mode.
Use the female option only for women who have not
undergone a hysterectomy.
3. Have the patient lie in the supine position with
abdominal muscles relaxed.
4. Palpate the patient’s symphysis pubis (pubic bone).
5. Place an ample amount of gel midline on the patient’s
abdomen, approximately 1 inch (3 cm) above the
symphysis pubis.
6. Place the instrument on the gel on the patient’s
abdomen.
7. Aim the instrument slightly downward toward the
patient’s coccyx (tail bone).

8. Press and release the Scan button.
A scanning symbol appears in the upper right-hand corner of the LCD screen during the scan.

9. Hold the probe steady until the scan is nished.
When you hear the end-scan tone, the scan is complete.
10. Using the Results screen, verify that the aim was accurate.
If no arrow is displayed, then the
bladder was completely contained
within the scanning cone. The
measurement is accurate.
If a solid arrow is displayed, then
the bladder was mostly inside the
scanning cone. The results are
satisfactory, but in order to ensure
accuracy, Verathon recommends
that you re-aim in the direction of
the arrow and perform the scan
again.
If a ashing arrow is displayed,
then the scan is off-target, and the
bladder was not enclosed within
the scanning cone. Re-aim the
probe in the direction indicated by
the ashing arrow and perform the
scan again.
11. If you want to save the scan, record a voice annotation as follows:
• Press and hold the top button until you hear a tone.
• Hold the microphone approximately 6 inches (15 cm) from your mouth and speak clearly.
• When you have nished recording, release the top button and listen to your annotation play back.
• If you are satised with the annotation, do not press any buttons. After several seconds, the BVI 6400
automatically accepts and stores the annotation with the exam.
