1 Description and Intended Purpose

Please keep these instructions.
Application
This device is to be used exclusively as part of a lower limb prosthesis.
Intended for single user.
The Elan is a biomimetic foot and ankle system with microprocessor controlled dorsiexion
and plantar exion. It is designed to adapt dynamically (via motorized valves) to provide
assistance when walking on a variety of surfaces, when changing gait speeds and increased
levels of safety and security when walking and standing.

• The Elan Software adapts to individual user gait characteristics

This device provides limited self-alignment of the prosthesis on varied terrain and following
footwear changes. It is intended to improve postural sway, balance stability and inter-limb
loading symmetry while easing high pressures at the socket interface.

2 Safety Information
1. Any changes in performance of the ankle motion e.g. restricted movement, non-
smooth motion should be immediately reported to your service provider.
2. Always use a hand rail when descending stairs and at any other time if available.
3. Any excessive changes in heel height after programming will adversely aect
ankle function and should be immediately reported to your service provider for
reprogramming and calibration.
4. After continuous use the ankle casing may become hot to the touch.
5. Avoid strong magnetic elds, sources of electrical interference, atmospheres
containing liquids and/or powders.
6. Avoid exposure to extreme heat and/or cold.
7. The electronic components are sealed for water resistance. However the Elan is not
intended for use when immersed in water or as a shower prosthesis. If the ankle
comes into contact with water wipe dry immediately.
8. Ensure no water enters the interface/charging cable connector.
9. The Elan is not suitable for extreme sports, running or cycle racing, ice and snow
sports, extreme slopes and steps. Any such activities undertaken are done so
completely at the users’ own risk. Recreational cycling is acceptable.
10. Contact your service provider for advice if the Elan is to be used with a pacemaker or
any other electronic medical device.
11. Assembly, programming and repair of the Elan must only be carried out by suitably
qualied practitioners, certied by Blatchford.
12. The user must not adjust or tamper with the setup of the Elan.
13. The user should be advised to contact their clinician if their condition changes.
14. The Elan detects standing and walking on inclines, declines and walking at various
speeds on normal ground. Non-identied movements such as treadmills and
travalators may cause unexpected ankle behaviour.
15. Never plug the charger into the Elan while still wearing the limb.
16. Only charge the batteries in the Elan using the charger supplied with the product.
Do not use this charger for charging any other device. Ensure the charging port
connector cover is correctly retted after charging, replace if damaged.
17. Ensure only suitably retrotted vehicles are used when driving. All persons are
required to observe their respective driving laws when operating motor vehicles.
18. Ensure charging cable and Bluetooth dongle are correctly aligned prior to connection
and that adequate access to the charging port is provided.

19. To minimise the risk of slipping and tripping, appropriate footwear that ts securely
onto the footshell must be used at all times.
20. Be aware of nger trap hazard at all times.

4 Key points and precautions for use
Maintenance must be carried out by competent personnel.
It is recommended that maintenance is carried out annually and a service carried out as a
condition of warranty every 20 months.
Key points:
Any changes in performance of this device must be reported to the practitioner
Changes in performance may include:
• Increase in ankle stiness
• Reduced ankle support (freer movement)
• Any unusual noise
At low battery power levels the Elan will go into sleep mode, switch o dynamic control and
use only the basic resistance settings. Charge the Elan batteries as soon as possible to restore
Dynamic mode.
The practitioner must also be informed of the following:
• Any changes in body weight and/or activity level.
• Signicant wear or excessive discoloration from long term exposure to UV.
Cleaning:
Use a damp cloth and mild soap to clean outside surfaces, DO NOT use aggressive cleansers.
Ensure water/liquids do not enter the interface connector (Micro D).
Transport and Storage:
Storage temperature range between -15˚C and 50˚C (5˚F and 122˚F).
If the Elan is shipped, the packaging supplied with the unit should be used. When built
into a limb it should be stored securely so as not to damage the unit.
Lifting loads:
User weight and activity is governed by the stated limits.
Load carrying by the user should be based on a local risk assessment.
Environment:
Avoid exposing the Elan to corrosive elements such
as water, acids and other liquids. Also avoid abrasive
environments such as those containing sand for
example as these may promote premature wear.
Exclusively for use between -15˚C and 50˚C
(5˚F and 122˚F).

5 Battery Charging
Please advise user of the charging information in this section.
The batteries are not eld replaceable and will be replaced as
necessary when serviced.
Read the user instructions supplied with the
charger before using for the rst time.
We recommend the Elan is charged daily; it should take 2
hours to charge fully, depending on residual charge. An
exhausted or at battery may take longer.
Lay the limb on a at surface and use the Charger Cable
Adapter to connect the charger into the socket in the top
of the Elan body.
Use the indicator light on the charger to conrm that
charging has initiated correctly:
The Elan will take several seconds to reset when the charger is disconnected and a single blue
ash from the LED will conrm a correct startup.

1. Only charge the batteries in the Elan using the charger supplied with the product.
Do not use this charger for charging any other device.
2. The battery charger can be used with an electrical outlet that is rated
between 100V and 240V AC, 50/60Hz.
3. Never plug the charger into the Elan while still wearing the limb.
4. During charging no power is delivered to the ankle control system.
5. The front of the ankle may become warm during charging but should never be too
hot to touch. There should be no abnormal smell. If this is the case immediately
unplug from electrical supply and contact your service provider.
6. Do not ret the limb until the charger has been disconnected.
7. Always recharge the Elan before use if it has not been used for an extended period of
time.
8. Ensure the connector cover is retted after charging
9. When charging an empty battery the charger may revert to trickle charge as a
precaution to prevent damaging the battery.

1. Single Flash
When the charger is disconnected the LED will ash once to indicate correct start up.
2. Continuous Flash
If the LED ashes continuously after disconnection this may indicate an error has been
detected. To reset the Elan, reconnect and then disconnect the charger the Elan should ash
once to indicate correct start up. If the Elan will not reset contact your service provider.
3. Alternate Long-Short Flash
Indicates Battery shutdown; If this is seen shortly after an adequate charging period,
contact your service provider a battery service may be required.

To check the battery charge status, tilt the
foot down vertically and hold stationary for
4 seconds. The LED at the rear of the Elan will
ash blue, 1-3 times (see table) to indicate the
charge status and then repeat. Tilt the foot
again to check the battery status again.

by the Practitioner, refer to the Clinician's Manual
for details.

Liability
The manufacturer recommends using the device only under the specied conditions and for
the intended purposes. The device must be maintained according to the instructions for use
supplied with the device. The manufacturer is not liable for any adverse outcome caused by any
component combinations that were not authorized by them.

devices. This product has been classied as a class I device according to the classication rules

Warranty
The Elan is warranted for – 36 months – foot shell 12 months - glide sock 3 months.

Application

L'appareillage Elan est un système de pied et cheville biomimétique dont la exion
dorsale et plantaire sont contrôlées par un microprocesseur. Il est conçu pour s'adapter
dynamiquement (à l'aide de valves motorisées) à la marche sur des surfaces variées ou lors
des changements d'allure. Il améliore également la sécurité lors de la marche et de la station
debout.

Ce dispositif fournit un auto-alignement limité de la prothèse sur divers terrains et en cas de

2 Informations de sécurité
1. Toute variation des performances au niveau du mouvement de la cheville (par
ex. amplitude restreinte, rigidité du mouvement, mouvement dicile) doit être
immédiatement signalée à votre orthoprothésiste.
2. Toujours tenir la rampe lors d’un déplacement dans des escaliers et chaque fois que
c’est possible.
3. Les variations excessives de la hauteur de talon après programmation auront un eet
négatif sur le fonctionnement de la cheville, elles doivent donc être immédiatement
signalées à votre orthoprothésiste pour reprogrammation et étalonnage.
4. Il est possible qu’après une utilisation continue, le corps de la cheville devienne
chaude au toucher.
5. Éviter les champs magnétiques trop forts, les sources d’interférences électriques, les
atmosphères contenant des liquides et/ou des poussières.
6. Éviter une exposition à une chaleur/un froid extrême.
7. Les composants électroniques sont protégés par des joints étanches pour une
résistance à l’eau. Cependant, Elan n’est pas conçu pour être immergé dans l’eau
ou être utilisé sous la douche. Si la cheville entre en contact avec de l’eau, l’essuyer
immédiatement.
8. Veiller à ce qu’aucune eau ne s’inltre dans l’interface/la prise du câble de charge.
9. Elan n’est pas approprié aux sports extrêmes comme: la course à pied et le cyclisme en
compétition, les sports sur neige ou sur glace et les pentes fortes et les marches hautes.
La pratique de telles activités se fait sous l’entière responsabilité de l’utilisateur. Par
contre il n’y a aucune contre-indication à la pratique du vélo comme loisir.
10. Contactez votre orthoprothésiste pour obtenir des conseils si Elan est utilisé avec un
pacemaker ou tout autre appareil médical électronique.
11. Le montage, la programmation et les réparations de Elan ne doivent être eectués
que par un orthoprothésiste qualié, agréé par Blatchford.
12. L’utilisateur ne doit pas ajuster ni toucher au réglage de Elan.
13. L’utilisateur doit contacter son orthoprothésiste si sa situation change.
14. Elan détecte les stations debout, la marche sur les plans inclinés en descente et/ou en
montée, ainsi que les variations de vitesse sur une surface normale. Les mouvements
non identiés tels que sur tapis ou trottoir roulant peuvent être à l'origine d'un
comportement anormal de la cheville.
15. Ne jamais brancher le chargeur à Elan lorsque la prothèse est encore sur l’utilisateur.
16. Charger les batteries de Elan uniquement avec le chargeur fourni avec le produit.
Ne pas utiliser ce chargeur avec d’autres produits. Veiller à toujours bien remettre en
place le couvercle du connecteur après le chargement. Le remplacer s'il est endommagé.
17. Conduire uniquement sur des véhicules convenablement mis en conformité. Chaque
personne doit respecter les règles de la route du pays où elle se trouve lorsqu’elle
utilise un véhicule motorisé.
18. Vérier que le câble de chargement et la clé Bluetooth sont correctement emboîtés
avant de procéder au branchement. Vérier que l'accès au port de chargement est
convenable (Voir Section5).
19. An de minimiser les risques de glissades et/ou de faux pas, il faut toujours utiliser
des chaussures appropriées qui tiennent bien à l’enveloppe esthétique.
20. Sachez que vous risquez toujours de vous pincer les doigts.

4 Points clés et précautions d'utilisation
L’entretien doit être eectué par du personnel qualié.
Il est recommandé de procéder à une inspection tous les ans. Pour que la garantie
demeure valide, il convient de réaliser l'entretien tous les 20mois.
Points clés:
Quelconque changement de performance de ce dispositif doit être signalé à
l’orthoprothésiste
Les changements de performance peuvent inclure:
• une augmentation de la rigidité de la cheville
• une réduction du soutien de la cheville (meilleure liberté de mouvement)
• Tout bruit inhabituel
Si le niveau de charge de la batterie est bas, Elan passe en mode veille, arrête le
contrôle dynamique et applique uniquement les réglages de résistance basiques. Pour
repasser en mode dynamique, recharger les batteries aussi vite que possible.
L’orthoprothésiste doit également être informé des faits suivants:
• toute variation du poids corporel et/ou du niveau d’activité;
• usure importante ou décoloration excessive due à une exposition à long terme aux UV.
Nettoyage:
Utiliser un chion humide et un détergent doux pour nettoyer les surfaces externes.
NE PAS utiliser de produit agressif. Veiller à ce qu’aucun liquide ne s’inltre dans le
connecteur de l’interface (Micro D).
Transport et stockage:
température de stockage comprise entre -15˚C et 50˚C.
Dans le cas de l'expédition de Elan, il convient d'utiliser l'emballage fourni avec le
produit. S'il est expédié dans le cadre d'un ensemble prothétique, il doit être entreposé
en toute sécurité pour ne pas endommager le produit.
Port de charges:
Le poids et l’activité de l’utilisateur sont régis par les limites spéciées.
La charge portée par l’utilisateur doit se baser sur une évaluation locale des risques.
Environnement:
Éviter d’exposer Elan à des éléments corrosifs tels
que l’eau, des acides et autres liquides. En outre,
éviter les environnements abrasifs tels que ceux
comportant du sable par exemple car cela peut
favoriser une usure prématurée.
Utiliser exclusivement entre -15˚C et 50˚C.

5 Charge de la batterie
Veuillez informer l’utilisateur des renseignements relatifs à la
charge de la batterie contenus dans cette section.
Les batteries ne peuvent être remplacées par le client et elles
seront remplacées, le cas échéant, lors de l’entretien.
Lisez les instructions fournies avec le chargeur
avant de vous en servir pour la première fois.
Nous recommandons de charger les batteries de
Elan chaque jour. La charge complète prend environ
2heures, en fonction de la charge résiduelle. La
charge d'une batterie à plat peut prendre plus
longtemps.
Poser l’appareil sur une surface plane et utiliser le
câble fourni avec le chargeur pour le connecter à la
prise située en haut du corps de l'appareil.
Contrôler le voyant sur le chargeur pour conrmer
que la charge a bien commencé:
La réinitialisation de Elan prend plusieurs secondes si le chargeur est débranché. Un
seul clignotement bleu de la LED indique un démarrage correct.

1. Charger les batteries de Elan uniquement avec le chargeur fourni avec le produit.
Ne pas utiliser ce chargeur avec d’autres produits.
2. Le chargeur peut être utilisé avec une prise électrique de tension nominale comprise
entre 100 V et 240V CA, 50/60Hz.
3. Ne jamais brancher le chargeur à Elan lorsque la prothèse est encore sur l’utilisateur.
4. Durant la charge, le système de commande de la cheville n’est pas alimenté.
5. Il est possible que la cheville chaue lors du chargement, mais elle ne doit jamais être
brûlante au toucher. Il ne doit pas non plus dégager une odeur anormale. Dans ce
cas, débranchez le produit immédiatement de la prise électrique et contactez votre
fournisseur.
6. Ne jamais rechausser l’appareil tant que le chargeur n’a pas été débranché.
7. Si la prothèse Elan n’a pas été utilisée pendant une période prolongée, toujours la
recharger avant utilisation.
8. Veiller à bien remettre en place le couvercle du connecteur après le chargement.
9. Lors du chargement d’une batterie épuisée, il est possible que le chargeur bascule en
charge d’entretien pour éviter d’endommager la batterie.

Lorsque le chargeur est débranché, la LED clignote une fois pour indiquer un
démarrage correct.
2 Clignotement continu
Si la LED clignote de manière continue après la déconnexion, cela peut indiquer
qu'une erreur a été détectée. Pour réinitialiser Elan, rebrancher puis débrancher le
chargeur; Elan doit clignoter une fois pour indiquer un démarrage correct. Si Elan ne
se réinitialise pas, contactez votre fournisseur.
3 Clignotement long-court alternatif
Indique l'arrêt de la batterie; si cela se produit après une durée de chargement
normale, contactez votre fournisseur car il est peut-être nécessaire de vérier la
batterie.
Après que la batterie a été
chargée, la LED de Elan peut
clignoter 2 à 3fois en fonction
de la durée du chargement, de
l'âge et de l'état de la batterie.
Pour vérier l'état de charge de la
batterie, incliner le pied à la verticale et le
maintenir ainsi pendant 4secondes.
La LED située à l'arrière de Elan clignote
en bleu, de 1 à 3fois (voir le tableau), puis
recommence, pour indiquer l'état de la
charge. Incliner à nouveau le pied pour
contrôler à nouveau l'état de la batterie.
Remarque… Cette fonction peut
être activée/désactivée par le praticien,
reportez-vous au manuel du clinicien pour
plus de détails.
