The on-board computer offers you a great many functions which will make your
journeys even safer and more of a pleasure.
The GPS navigation system renders it unnecessary to consult printed maps or
search for road signs and brings you accurately to any destination shown on the
map CD.
The radio and the cassette and CD players ensure the best possible signal recep-
tion, sound quality and choice of entertainment for all listeners' tastes, and take the
monotony out of even the longest journey.
The TV with teletext ensures a supply of topical information and provides in-car en-
tertainment while you are waiting.
The BMW car phones mean that you can always be contacted and make outgoing
telephone calls.
The computer calculates data relevant to the journey – average fuel consumption,
range and estimated time of arrival. It also provides additional safety both before
the engine can be started – for instance by demanding a code input for the engine
immobiliser – and when driving, for example by supplying a warning signal to make
sure that you do not drive faster than intended.

Notes on these Operating Instruc-

So that you can enjoy using your on-
board computer as soon as possible,
the first chapter provides an overview
of the displays and controls, and ex-
plains the operating principle.
You will in addition find

Whichever functions you choose, all in-
formation and selection options are dis-
played across the entire width of the
screen.
If you prefer this form of screen layout,
under MENU you can select the func-
tion "Set" to alter the standard setting
"Split", see page 19.

Calling up MENU
Various functions are integrated into the
on-board computer. If you call up the
top menu (MENU), these are displayed,
see page 12.
Call up "MENU"
If you select a function in MENU, you
are offered either adjustment options or
further menus:

the computer switches between

To return to the main MENU level from
any other menu or function:

To select a function, please perform
two steps with the rotary control:
1. Mark a function
Turn right-hand rotary control until
the desired function is highlighted
2. Confirm the choice of function
Press right-hand rotary control.
These two steps are expressed collec-
tively on the following pages as:
Select "Function"
More functions
If the screen shows one of the above
symbols, you can call up more func-
tions on the menu you have chosen.
To do this, turn the right-hand rotary
control in the direction of the symbol in
question. You can now highlight and
select one of the functions shown, see
"Selecting function".
Depending on the extent of the
function, it may take a few
seconds for the screen to display the
additional functions.<

Operating principle
Last function memory
This function makes it easier for you to
call up again the information that you
last had on the screen or the function
that you were last using before switch-
ing off the on-board computer or
changing to a different menu.
When you switch the on-board com-
puter back on or select the desired
function again in "MENU", the com-
puter immediately switches to the menu
level you were last using.
To interrupt this function if you would
like to enter the first menu level when
changing over:
Press twice briefly.
Selecting "return" symbol
To return to a previous menu or func-
tion level, perform the following action:
Select .
As described under "Selecting func-
tion", the "return" symbol can also be
highlighted with the right-hand rotary
control, then selected by pressing the
control.
Browsing forward and back
If the screen shows one of the above
symbols, you can call up more entries
in a list.
As described under "Selecting func-
tion", this symbol can also be high-
lighted with the right-hand rotary con-
trol, then selected by pressing the
control.

To enable you to find your way round at
a glance, the individual steps to be per-
formed in making each selection are
shown beneath the illustration of the
corresponding menu.
Depending on the operation, the follow-
ing elements may be involved:
>Buttons to press
>Functions to select with the right-
hand rotary control. "Selecting func-
tion", see page 16
>The right-hand rotary control with ar-
rows, if it is to be only pressed or only
turned.
The individual steps are separated by
the symbol.
An example: adjusting date
The structure and operating principle
are illustrated here, using the proce-
dure for adjusting the date as an exam-
ple:
1. Call up "MENU"
2. Select "Set"
3. Select "Date"
4. Select "Set"
5. Select the year
6. Turn right-hand rotary control to
adjust the year
7. Press right-hand rotary control to
memorise the setting
8. Set the month and day in the same
way.
The date settings are retained
9. Select .
The last operation takes you out of
the date input routine.
You can also choose the order in which
the date is expressed: either the days
(dd) first, followed by the months (mm) -
or in the opposite order.
To exit a function or adjustment
option that has been selected in-
advertently, select it a further time. You
can now select any of the other func-
tions.<

Selecting settings
Depending on the country for which
your vehicle is supplied, the on-board
computer has specific basic settings for
all displays. These settings can also be
made as preferred individually.
1. Call up "MENU"
2. Select "Set".
The adjustment options are dis-
played.
You can adjust the following:
>"Screen"
To select the screen layout (split or
full), see page 15
>"Clock"
>"Date"
To adjust the time and date and alter
their form of expression
>"Navi. volume"
To adjust the volume of the audio
source in relation to the navigation in-
structions (min to max)
>"Colour set"
To select a set of colours for the
screen display
>"Language"
To select the language of the display
texts.
For further settings, follow the sym-
bol.
You can now adjust:
>"Distance" (km or mls)
>"Consump." (l/100 km, mpg or km/l)
>"Temperature" (6or 7)
To alter the units of measurement for
distance, fuel consumption and tem-
perature
>"Memo"
To set a signal which sounds on the
hour
>"BMW ASSIST"*
You can initialise or update this emer-
gency-call and information service if
it has been arranged for you by BMW
Service
>"Roaming" (only with BMW ASSIST)
You can use the above service when
abroad (automatically or off).
