Precision I ntcgrating Sound Level Meter '!Ype 2236 is a Type
1 sound levcl metcr complying with IEC 651 (1979) and 804
(1985), and ANSIS 1.4-1983 and Draft S 1.43, 6th Sept.,

In addition, Precision Int egr ating Sound Level M ete r Types
2236 C-002 and 2236 D- 002 contain 111-octave filter sets
between 31.5Hz and 8kHz which comply with lEC 225 (1966)
and ANSIS 1.11-1986. They can measure all the above-men-
tioned parameters in each of the filter bands.

measurement set-up. They are very useful and are based on
a
very simple principl e (see the example in Fig . 1.1). There

About the Type 2236 Sound Level Meter
• Output Fonnats
Checking
You can check the first of the sound level meter's Settings by
pressing the {Show) pushkey. You can then step through
them by pressing (Show). However, the Settings are cyclic
and you can step forwards and backwards through them us-
ing Parameter (.Å.) and ('Y), respective)y (see Fig. 1.1).

About the Type 2236 Sound Level Meter

When the cursor ison the set-up line ofthe Setting you want
to change, press Parameter (.Å.) and {'Y) to step through
the available parameters. You can also step through them by
pressing (Edit) (see Fig. 1.1).
When you have the set-up you desire for that Setting, press
(OK) to save the changes and check the changed Setting. An
accept cursor (•) replaces the edit cursor ( ~) to show that the
sound level meter has accepted the change.
If you change a Setting by mistake, press (NO) instead of
(OK) to revert to its previous set-up.
Fig. 1.2 shows an overview of the available Settings.

About the Type 2236 Sound Level Meter
Fast Edit
In addition to the normal way of changing the se t;..up of a
Setting (i.e. pressing (Show), stepping through to the desired
Setting and pressing (Edit)), you can also use two pusb.keys
together to "fast edit" a Setting (i.e. go directly to a Setting
with the edit cursor).
lf you press (Edit) follo we d by the pushkey in<lica ted in
Table 1.1, the selected Setting appears with the edit cursor
( ~)*. You can now check and change the set-up ofthe Setting
as described earlier in this section. When you have finished
changing the Setting, pressing (NO) or (OK), however, re-
turns you to the main sc re en.

Th e sound level meter 's ( Data} pushkey allows you to print
your measurement results ( data ) and control the sound level
meter 's memory. It operates on a similar principle as Se ttings
(see section 1.2.2) except that you press (Data} in s tead of
(Show). ln addition, the sound level meter return s to the
main screen after you ha ve accepted changes to the se lected
operation.
There are four data operations, each with its own
screen:

Contains the set-up and all results for the current measure--
ment (Le. since the last reset)- see section 1.2.1. From tbese,
tbe Overall Results are calculated. The buffer is updated once
a second.
Contains the automatically Logged Results (see section 5.5.2):

and C-002 can contain up to 21600 sets of results (i.e. up to
64800 results with their measurement times). This is enough

and D-002 can contain up to 86400 sets of results (i.e. up
to 259200 result.s with their measurement times). This is

Practical Hints
Th~ sound lcvcl met<~r is dcsigned as a self- contained unit to
mect Lhe rcquircmcnt.s giv( ~ n in IEC 651 nnd similar national
standards. Howcver, some of thc requirements given in the
standards are based on measurements of pure tones under
free field co ndi tions. Pr actical meas urements under similar
conditions requir c the following c xt ra precauti ons:
•
do not stand close to the sound lcvel meter
• do not use a windscreen or protcctive cover
• increa se the distance between the microphone and the
tripod (c.g. by using Tripod Arm UA1246)
•
using a microphon e extension cable, increase the distance
between the microph one and any objccts which can cause
disturbances
The influence ofyour presence on the measurement can easily
bc chcckcd by chunging the distance bctwcen you and the
microphone and observing the change in the measured sound
pressure levcl. If your position inftucnces the measurement
rcsult, then use a microphone extcnsion cablc or spatially

Praetical Hints
average your measurements. Note that, when dealing with
pure tones, a small change in the position of the microphone
can influence the result ju st as mu ch as your physical pres-
ence.
Fortunately, the combination of free sound field and pure
tones is very rare. Wi.th sound coming from several directions
and as you are measuring over a broad frequency band, the
inftuence of the sound level meter' s hou sing, tripod and user
becomes insignificant, and the above precautions need not be
taken .
Figs. 6.8 and 6.9 show the influence of Tripod UA0801 and
Protective Cover UA 1236 under free field conditions and with
pure tones .

Introduction
This ch apte r guides you t hrough the basic functions of the
sound lev el meter by instructing you on how to make a noise
measurement in a free sound fie ld according to ISO 1996. You
can find further infonnation on the various steps in the rel-
evant sections of the User Manual.
lt is a good idea to have th e fold out back cover open so that
you have an an notated illus tratio n of the sound level meter
in fron t of you while you follow the exampl e measur emen t.
We have as s umed t ha t the soun d lev el meter is swit ched off
and ha s not been used before following these instruct ions . lf
it has, ensure that you are using the d efau lt set-up (see
section 3.3) be fore following the steps below.

print out your results using Seria l Pri nter WQ 11 38.
Making a Measurement
Turning On
\. Pre ss CD .
The sound lcvel m clcr turns on. Af ter a sclf- tcst, the
sound level meter is set up in Pause mod e in the default
set - up . The quasi-anal ogue scale shows the input signal
to the pream plifier and the displayed p aram eter shows
the curr ent SPL. T he buffer, log and memory are emp ty.
Since th e displayed parameter ( SPL ) is a RMS parameter,
you can see t he frequency weight ing of the RMS signal
(shown i.n the bottom right-h and corner of the screen ).

The screen shows the default Auto Logging screen.
3. Press Parameter (Ä ).
The screen chan ges to the Calibra tion screen. The current
cali bration factor is shown.

calibration chart and use Parameter ( .&. ) and ( ~ ) to set
