Do NOT connect the interface cable.
Connecting the interface cable is
done when installing the d river.
1Open the ADF cover.
2Ins e rt th e ta bs o f ADF s u pp or t i nt o t h e h ole s

3Push ADF Support down until it latches in place.
4Close the ADF cover.
1Open the front cover by pressing the front
cover release button.

3Rock it from side to side several times to
distribute the toner e venly inside the
assembly.
4Push the drum unit assemb ly in to th e
machine (until it snaps into pl ace).
5Clo se the fro nt cover of the machine.
1Pull the paper tray completely out of the
machine.
2While pressing the pa pe r guid e re lease lever,
sl ide the adjusters to fit the pa pe r size.
Check that the guides are firm ly in the slo ts
on the tray.
3Load Paper in the Paper

out the rear of the paper tray.

3Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper
jams and misfeeds.
4Put paper in the paper tray.
Check that the paper is flat in the tray and
below th e maximu m pa pe r mark.
5Pu t th e p ap er tra y fi rm ly ba ck in th e m a ch ine
and unfo ld the sup por t flap before yo u use
the mach ine .
1Push the lever up to unlock the scanner.
(The gray scanner lock lever is located at
the back left under side of the document
cover.)

Do not connect the Parallel or USB
cable yet.
1Make sure that the power switch is off.
Connect the AC power cord to the machine.
2Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet.
Turn the power switch on.
3Connect one end of the telephone line cord
to the j ack on th e M FC m ar ked LINE an d the
othe r en d to a m od ula r wall jack.
Warning
■The MFC must be grounded using a 3-prong plug.
■Since the MFC is grounded through the power
outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially
hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone
network by keeping the power to your MFC on
when you connect it to a telephone line. Similarly,
you can protect yourself when you want to move
your MFC by disconnecting the telephone line first
and then the power cord.
5Install Power Cord and
Phone Line
If Check Scan Lock appears on the LCD,
immediately release the scanner lock and
press Stop/Exit.
If you are sharing one phone line with an
external telephone, connect it as shown
below.
If you are sharing one phone line with an
external telephone answering device,
connect it as shown below.
Please set the receive m ode to External
TAD.

The MFC displays the date and time, and prints it on
every fax you send.
1Press the Menu key.
2Press the key.
3Press the key.
4Enter the last two digits of the year on the
dial pad, and then p ress the Setkey.
(e.g. Enter 0, 3for 2003.)
5Enter the two di gits for th e mon th on th e d ial
pad, and then pr ess the Setkey.

You should store your name and fax number to be
printed on all fax pages that you send.
1Press the Menu key.
2Press the key.
3Press the key.
4Enter your fax n umber (up to 20 d igi ts) o n
the d ia l pa d, and then press the
Set key.
5Enter your telephone number (up to 20
digits) on the dial pad, and then press the
Set key.
(If your telephone number and fax number
are the same, e nter the sam e nu mber
again.)
6Use the dial pad to enter your nam e (up to
20 characters), an d then press the

Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up
the Machine” on pages 4 - 11.
1Switch o ff and unplug th e MFC from the AC
outlet a nd disconnect it from your com pute r,
if you already connected an interface cable.
2Turn on your computer.
(For Windows®2000 Professional/XP, you
must be logged on as the administrator.)
3Insert th e supplied C D-RO M for Wind ows ®
into your CD-R OM dr ive. If the mod el na me
screen appears, select your machine. If the
language screen appears, select your
language.
4The CD-RO M main m enu will app ea r.
Click Install Software.
5Click MFL-Pro Suite in M ain Applica tion.
6Click Install.
For USB Interface Cable Users
(For Windows®98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP)
If this window does not appear, use
Windows®Explore to run the setup.exe
program from the root directory of the
Brother CD-ROM.
MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver,
Scanner Driver, ScanSoft®PaperPort®,
ScanSoft ®Text Bridge®, PC-FAX software,
Remote Setup and True Type fonts.
PaperPort®is a document management
application for viewing scanned docum ents.
ScanSoft ®Tex tBridge ®, which is integrated
into PaperPort®, is an OCR application that
converts an image into text and inserts it into
your default word processor.
If you see the following screen, click OK to
install the Windows®updates. After the
updates are installed your PC may restart.
Note: If it does the installation will
automatically continue.
If the installation does not continue
automatically, please open the installer
menu again by double-clicking the
setup.exe program from the root directory of
the Brother CD-ROM, and continue from
Step 4.

License Agreement, enter your user
information and click Next.

CWhen the Brother MFL-Pro Suite
Installation window appears, click Next.
If an error message appears at this point in
the installation process, or if you have
previously installed the MFL-Pro Suite, you
w ill first have to uninstall it. F rom the Start
menu, select Programs, Brother, Brother
MFL-Pro Suite, Uninstall, and then follow
the instructions on the screen.

It will take a few seco nd s for the instal lation
screen to appear.
The i nstallation of the Bro ther drivers will
automatically start. Follow the instructions
on th e screen .
HSelect BRUSB: USB Printer Port,and then
click Next.
IAccept the d efault Printe r na me by selecting
Yes, and then click Next.
JSelect Yes (recommended), and thenclick
Finish. A te s t p ag e w il l be p rin te d s o y o u
can check the print quality.
KIf the test page is printed correctly, click
Yes. If you click No, follow the prompts on
th e scre en to correct the problem .
For Windows®98/98SE/Me Users Only
If the README.WRI file shown in step L
appears, close the README.WRI file and
then click Finish after printing the page.

Please read this file for troubleshooting
information and then close the file to
con tinue installation.
MClick Finish to restart your computer.
NAfter the computer restarts, click Yesto
have the Control Center load each time
Windows®is started. The Control Center
will appear as an icon in the task tray.
If you click No the Scan keys on the MFC
will be disabled.
The Brother PC -FAX, Printer and
Scanner drivers have been installed
and the installation is now complete.
For USB Interface Cable Users
(For Windows®98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP)
Even if you select NO, you will be able to
launch the Brother Control Center later to
use the Scan to key by double clicking the
Smart UI icon on the desktop. This loads the
Brother Control Center to the task tray. See
AutoLoad the Brother Control Center,
Chapter 15 in the Documentation (User’s
Guide) located on the CD-ROM .
