I. Product Overview
A. Overview
The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 are 44-inch five-color
dye and pigment reactive ink large format printers designed for the CAD and
display material markets. The imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830
printers are capable of producing an A0 print in approximately 42 seconds (on
plain paper using Draft and Economy mode).
These models are intended as entry-level, multipurpose, large-format printers
that produce high volume printing. They have a space saving design for a
flush wall installation with full front accessible operation and an assisted top
loading feature for easy media loading.
As an Energy Star Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. (Canon USA) has determined
that the imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 models meet the Energy
Star guidelines for energy efficiency.
B. Design Features
These imagePROGRAF models bring the following capabilities to end-users:
•The imagePROGRAF iPF850 configuration includes a high-capacity
stacker that holds up to 100 A0 size sheets of premium plain paper or
plain paper and a dual roll paper feed for continuous high-volume printing
of different sizes and types of paper.
Note: Coated Media from the imagePROGRAF iPF850 will need to go to
the output stacker catch basket.
•The imagePROGRAF iPF840 configuration includes a dual roll paper feed
for continuous high-volume printing of different sizes and types of paper
and a large size basket that holds up to 20 B0 size sheets.
•The imagePROGRAF iPF830 configuration includes a single roll paper
feed and a large size basket that holds up to 20 B0 size sheets.
•Prints with 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution can be made at a high speed1.
•Locking control panel feature in Administrator mode restricts the
operations of general users to a certain menu when the control panel is
locked to enable a secure and efficient printer management.
•The PF-04 Printhead uses 2,560 nozzles per color (total 15,360) to
achieve up to 2400 x 1200 dpi images. The superfine 4pl droplets produce
delicate color gradations and high-definition. The Printhead nozzle (“I”
Nozzle) design reduces ink mist ensuring superfine printing.
•Standard support for 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T and USB 2.0 Hi-
Speed.

•High capacity ink tanks available in 330ml and 700ml in each color to
support high-volume continuous printing.
•Sub tank mounted at each ink port allows end-users to replace the ink
tank during a print job.
•Borderless printing is supported.
Note: the High Capacity Stacker does not support borderless printing.
Borderless prints from the imagePROGRAF iPF850 will need to go to the
output stacker catch basket.
•imagePROGRAF Printer Driver for Windows/Mac.
•Status Monitor for Windows, PrintMonitor for Mac.
•Compatibility with imageWARE Remote allows centralized management of
customers' printer information.
C. Workflow Solutions
1. imagePROGRAF Print Utility
•An iOS based app (available for download from the Apple App Store)
for wireless printing using an Apple iPad to a 5-color
imagePROGRAF printer sharing same network.
•Preview PDF, JPEG and PNG files.
•Settings include number of copies (up to ten), output mode and print
preview & scaling.
2. Direct Print and Share
Direct Print and Share 2.0 is a Canon cloud-based portal and batch
printing solution that helps end-user expand their printing workflow.
•Upload documents to Google's cloud service, and have those
documents printed from almost anywhere.
•Supports PDF, TIFF, JPEG, and HP-GL/2 file formats
•Batch printing.
•Includes a plug-in for SmartWorks MFP V3 (included) and AutoCAD
(sold separately).
•Set up and configure “Hot Folders” for drag and drop printing.
3. Print Plug-In for Microsoft Office
•A print plug-in for large-format documents created in Microsoft Word,
Excel, or PowerPoint.
•Displayed in Microsoft application tool bar with simple wizard
workflow.
•Simple print conversion from 8.5" x 11" office documents to poster
size.

4. PosterArtist Lite
Canon's bundled PosterArtist Lite poster creation software allows users
to create professional large format prints quickly and easily.
•Create posters for Office Presentation, Trade Shows, Retail Signage
and more
•Convert letter-size flyers and documents into full-size posters
•Direct Print & Share cloud portal support
•Easy sharing of poster files
•Web-link link for useful hints, tips, and free content
For those with more demanding poster creation needs, Canon's optional
PosterArtist (full version) offers advanced features such as Auto Design,
Variable Data, and in-application image editing features, as well as
additional templates, royalty-free photos, and clip art.
D. Océ Publisher Select
Océ Publisher Select is a client application that allows an end-user to create,
preview, print and manage jobs without starting an application or accessing
the printer driver. The utility also enables job previewing and printing
documents from a Hot Folder.
E. Accounting Manager
•Track ink and media consumption when printing large format output
•Costs can be assigned to the ink and paper to determine expenses based
on the "Cost of goods"
•Individual ink tanks have their own costs associated with them, as well as
a variety of different paper types
•The end-user can input a variable cost that will be added to the total of the
print cost
•The data can be exported as a .csv file format
F. imageRUNNER Enlargement Copy
•Scan single and multiple page PDF documents from an imageRUNNER
device to print to an imagePROGRAF printer
•The end-user can create a hot folder on their desktop to enlarge and print
single page and multiple page PDF documents
•Must be able to scan to a shared folder

III. Sales/Service Authorization
To become authorized and maintain authorization to service an imagePROGRAF
iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printer, each Authorized Servicer location must have at
least two (2) technicians that have completed the imagePROGRAF iPF810/iPF820
Series update training course.
To be authorized to service the imagePROGRAF iPF850 at least two (2)
technicians must complete the imagePROGRAF iPF850 High Capacity Stacker
Certification in addition to the imagePROGRAF iPF810/iPF820 Series update
training course.
IV. Educational Training
A. imagePROGRAF Printer Training
The imagePROGRAF iPF810/iPF820 Series Update Training Course is a
comprehensive learning program, which will prepare the service technician to
setup and service the imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printers.
The imagePROGRAF iPF850 High Capacity Stacker Program is an online
training course, which will prepare the service technician to support the High
Capacity Stacker included with the imagePROGRAF iPF850 printer.
New technicians must complete the Large Format Printer Core Technologies
and Advanced Operations online training course prior to completing the
iPF810/iPF820 Series update training course.
The online training course modules are available on Canon USA’s e-Support
Center Web Site (http://www.support.cusa.canon.com).

It is highly recommended that any technician responsible for installing,
servicing, or supporting the imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printers
successfully complete the required training courses and pass the final
assessment exams.
Note: Our current support policy dictates that only those technicians who
have completed the training program and pass the final assessment exam are
entitled to live, phone-based support through our Technical Support Center
(TSC). However, self-service support (software downloads, knowledgebase
articles, support forums, technical publications) is available through our
e-Support Center Web Site for all technicians. (Refer to the Technical Support
section on the e-Support Center Web site for entitlement details.)
D. Online Training Course
The online courses are located in the e-Learning center on the Canon USA
e-Support Center Web Site. Certification maps on the e-Support Center Web
Site provide easy access to the training. The online courses can be
conducted at any authorized servicer facility that is suitable for online student
learning.

V. Servicing Notes
A. Power and Plug Requirements
Canon USA strongly suggests dedicated and properly grounded outlets be
provided for the imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printer devices.
The imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printer requires a dedicated
single-phase 120V/15A NEMA 5-15 receptacle for proper operation.

IMPORTANT
•Canon recommends an additional standard 120V/15A NEMA 5-15 outlet
for service tools, such as a laptop computer or vacuum that may be used
when servicing or configuring the machine.
•Use only dedicated and properly grounded outlets for the
imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printer main unit. It is also
strongly suggested to use dedicated and properly grounded outlets for
each optional accessory. Do not use extension cords. The ground
connection serves to provide the internal electronics with a reference
voltage. Faulty or poor ground sources will cause this reference voltage to
fall into a range that no longer serves as a reliable reference voltage. The
internal logic and programming of the imagePROGRAF
iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printers will not perform reliably because there is
an insufficient difference between the internal operating signal voltages
and the poor ground reference signal. A qualified electrician can measure
and provide the ground source that the imagePROGRAF
iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printers or any computer controlled office
equipment requires.
•Before installation, confirm that all necessary receptacles are available.
•Phase converters and step down transformers are not supported

C. Installation Space Requirements
The imagePROGRAF iPF850/iPF840/iPF830 printer’s approximate
installation space requirements may differ, depending on how the printer is
configured. Always ensure that there is enough space for service and
operation of the device.
Refer to the imagePROGRAF iPF850, imagePROGRAF iPF840 or the
imagePROGRAF iPF830 Service Manual for details on transportation and
installation of the printer.
IMPORTANT
•For the imagePROGRAF iPF850, make sure that at least 59" (1,500 mm)
of space is available in front of the printer. For the imagePROGRAF
iPF840/iPF830, make sure that at least 23.6" (600 mm) of space is
available in front of the printer
•Make sure that at least and at least 3.9" (100 mm) is available in back of
the printer for the proper servicing of the equipment
•Make sure that at least 7.9" (200 mm) is available on the left, and right
sides of the printer for the proper servicing of the equipment.
•Make sure that at least 5.9" (150 mm) is available above the printer for the
proper servicing of the equipment.
•The floor must be level (with no bows) and flat for the stabilization and
support of the printer.
•The weight of the printer is primarily supported by the wheels.

D. Estimated Installation Times
The table below indicates the estimated length of time needed to unpack and
install the main unit. The estimated unpack and installation times are based
on a minimum of six (6) or more persons to unpack and move the printer, and
two (2) or more persons to install the printer.
The estimated installation times include the following:
•Installation space preparation
•Unpacking and positioning the printer (main unit) on a stand or table
•Installing the Printhead, ink tanks, and connecting the power cable
•Checking the printer operation and adjusting the printing position
