1. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
1.1. General Description
Installation,start-up and servicing of equipment can be hazardousif certain factors particularto the
installation are not considered: operating pressures, presence of electrical components and voltages and
the installation site (elevated plinthsand built-up up structures).Only properly qualified installation
engineers and highly qualified installers and technicians,fully trained for the product, and are authorized
to install and start-up the equipment safely.During all servicing operationsall instructions and
recommendations which appear in the installation and service instructionsfor the product, as well as on
tags and labels fixed to the equipment, components and accompanying parts supplied separately, must
be read, understood and followed.
- Apply all standard safety codesand practices.
- Wearsafety glasses andgloves.
- Use the proper tools to moveheavy objects. Move units carefully and setthem down gently.
1.2. Avoid Electrocution
Only personnel qualified in accordance with IEC (International Electro technical Commission)
recommendations may be permitted access to electricalcomponents. It isparticularlyrecommended that
all sources of electricity to the unit should be shutoff before anyworkis begun.Remember to shut off
the main power supplyat the main circuit breaker or isolator.
CAUTION: The equipmentuses and emits electromagnetic signals. Tests have shown
that the equipment conforms to all applicablecodes withrespect to electromagnetic
compatibility.
RISK OF ELECTROCUTION: Evenwhen themain circuitbreaker or isolator is switched off,
certain circuits may still be energized, since they may be connected to a separate power source.
RISK OF BURNS: Electrical currents cause components to get hot either temporarilyor
permanently. Handle power cable,electrical cables and conduits, terminalbox covers andmotor
frames with great care.

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
2.1. General Description
Carrier® SmartVuTM control is a control systemforcontrolling Carrier19 Series chiller which include both
legacy and next generation centrifugal water-cooled chillers. The control systemmonitors and controls
all operationsof the chiller. The control system matchesthe cooling or heating capacity of the chiller to
the cooling or heating load while providing state-of-the-art chillerprotection.Thesystemcontrols cooling
or heating load within the setpoint plusand minusthe dead band bysensing the water or brine
temperature and regulating the inlet guide vane via a mechanically linked actuatormotor and regulating
VFD speed if the compressor is a variable speed compressor. The guide vaneis a variable flow pre-whirl
assembly thatcontrols the refrigeration effectin the cooler by regulating the amountof refrigerant vapor
flow into the compressor. An increase in guide vane opening increases capacity.A decrease in guide
vane opening decreasescapacity. The control systemprotects the chiller by monitoring the digitaland
analog inputs and executingcapacityoverridesorsafetyshutdowns,if required.
Carrier® SmartVuTMcontrol also gives accessto a ControlTest function covering all outputs except
compressorrelay outputs.

3. HARDWARE DESCRIPTION
3.1. General Description
The 19 Series Carrier® SmartVuTM control system consists of one main control board (Carrier®
SmartVuTM board),an ISM (Integrated StarterModule) forfixed speed chiller or freestanding VFD
configuration and several IOBs and SIOB persystemconfiguration requirements. All boards
communicate via an internal LENbus. For the drivers (for example Rockwell and Eatondriver) which
don’t integrate Carrier LEN protocol,the Carrier® SmartVuTM board communicate with thedrivers via
Modbus.

3.2. Sensors
Pressure transducers:
Pressure transducers are used to measure and control the pressures in the unit. These electronic
sensors deliver0 to 5 VDC. The transducers can be calibrated throughthe controller. The pressure
transducers are connected to the IOBs.
For 19DV are the following three types of pressure transducerssupported: Tianmu,TEXAS, Sensata.

3.3. Controls Outputs
Evaporator / Condenser water pump
The controller can regulate an optionalevaporator / condenser water pump.
Inlet Guide Vane
The Inlet Guide vane (IGV) is used to adjust the refrigerant vapor flow into compressor to change in the
operating conditions of the machine. To adjust the refrigerant flow, the guide vane moves open or close
to vary the cross-sectionof the refrigerant path. The high degree of accuracywith which the guide vane
is positioned ensures that the flow of refrigerant isprecisely controlled. There are two guide vanes (first
stage and second stage guide vane) on 19DV chiller.
Economizer Damper valve (usedfor NGC chiller or the chiller whichis equippedwith electrical
damper valve)
The economizer dampercontrolpositions the economizerdamper valve open or closed to maintain a
minimum refrigerantpressure difference between the evaporator and economizer.
Damper vapor source solenoidvalve (used for 19XRC/E/F)
Damper vapor sorce solenoid valve adjusts the pressure difference between Economizer and
Evaporator according to pressure difference between damper cap and flow passage.
ECValve
The envelope control function isused to artificially load the chiller and keep it running under low load
conditionsor to prevent surge conditions. Since this also reducesthe operating efficiency of the
machine, this is a user selectable option.
VFD
The VFD allows compressor start-up and capacity control by modifying the motor frequency.
The controller continually monitors many VFD parameters (such as motor current,
motor frequency, KW, KWH1...) in order to ensure its protection. If aproblemoccurs, the
frequencycontroller triggersan alarm and, if necessary, stops the compressor.
Note: KWH may not auucate and can only be a reference.
3.4. Refrigerant Support
For the 19XR2~5/C/D/E/V/F/6/7, the R134a is available and R513a is an option for special products and
application.
For the 19DV, the R1233zd is available.
3.5. Connections at the User’s Terminal Block
The components listed below are available at the user’s terminal block on the IOB.Some of themcan
only be used if theunit operatesin the remote operating type (Remote mode).
