Safety Instructions
nLift the appliance with assistance. To avoid injury, do not attempt to lift the appliance by yourself.
nOpening or removing the appliance cover, while the appliance is powered on may expose you to a
risk of electric shock.
nDo not operate the appliance without the cover for more than five minutes. Operating the appliance
without the cover can result in component damage.
nMany repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. Only perform troubleshooting and
simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the technical support.
nWe recommend that you always use an antistatic mat and antistatic strap on your wrist, while working
on components inside the appliance.
nTo ensure proper operation and cooling, all bays in the appliance and cooling fans must be always
populated with a component or a blank.

booklet supplied in the original appliance shipping carton.
Best Practice - We recommend that only experienced personnel install or remove
hardware components. Installing or removing components incorrectly can permanently
damage the Security Management Appliance.
Important - Make sure that you are electromagnetically grounded when working with
hardware components of the appliance. ESD (electrostatic discharge) can damage the
appliance.

DC Power Supply Unit (PSU)
Smart-1 6000-L/6000-XL Security Management Appliances support up to two DC redundant power supply
units (PSUs).

Notes:
nThe appliances support PSU redundancy. One PSU is sufficient for the normal appliance operation.
nInstalling DC PSU and AC PSU together is not supported and triggers a mismatch event - the DC
PSU indicator LED flashes green.
nWhen only one PSU is installed, it must be installed in the first PSU bay - see the markings on the
appliance cover.
nTo ensure proper appliance cooling, leave the failed PSU in place until you get the replacement PSU.
This prevents the cooling air from escaping.
nWhen two PSUs are installed, and the appliance is powered on, you must remove and replace only
one PSU at a time.
nWhen two PSUs are installed, they must be of same type and have the same maximum output power.
nWhen two PSUs are installed, they must receive the same input DC voltages.
nWhen two identical PSUs are installed, power to the appliance is supplied equally from both PSUs to
maximize efficiency.

Indicator lights for DC PSU
Each DC PSU has a LED that illuminates with different colors. This LED shows whether DC power is
received, or a PSU fault occurred.

A valid DC power source is connected to the DC PSU.

Flashing
green
When you hot-plug a DC PSU, the DC PSU indicator LED flashes green. This indicates
that there is a mismatch between this hot-plugged DC PSU and the other installed DC
PSU. The mismatch is in any of these PSU characteristics: efficiency, feature set, health
status, or supported voltage.
Make sure that both DC PSUs are the same.
Notes:
nWhen correcting a PSU mismatch, replace only the DC PSU with the flashing
indicator. Swapping the other DC PSU to make a matched pair can result in an
error condition and unexpected appliance shutdown.
nInstalling DC PSU and AC PSU together is not supported and triggers a mismatch
event.

Wiring Instructions for a DC PSU
Warning - For equipment using -(48-60)V DC PSUs, a qualified electrician must perform
all connections to DC power and to safety grounds. Do not attempt connecting to DC
power or installing grounds yourself. All electrical wiring must comply with applicable
local or national codes and practices. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized is
not covered by your warranty.
Caution - Wire the DC PSU with copper only. Unless otherwise specified, use only 10
American Wire Gauge (AWG) wire rated minimum 90°C for source and return. Protect
the -(48-60)V DC (1 wire) with a branch circuit over-current protection rated 50A for DC
with a high interrupt current rating.
Caution Connect the equipment to a -(48-60)V DC supply source that is electrically
isolated from the AC source (reliably grounded -(48-60)V DC SELV source). Ensure that
the -(48-60)V DC source is efficiently secured to earth (ground).
Kit Contents:
nTerminal block ("RTN" and "-48V")
nM3.5 x 0.06 (#6-32) nut equipped with a lock washer
Required wires:
nOne UL 10 AWG, 2 m maximum (stranded) black wire [-(48-60)V DC].
nOne UL 10 AWG, 2 m maximum (stranded) red wire (V DC return).
nOne UL 10 AWG, 2 m maximum, green with a yellow stripe, stranded wire (safety ground).
To assemble and connect safety ground wire:
1. Remove the insulation from the end of the green or yellow wire, exposing approximately 4.5 mm
(0.175 inch) of copper wire.
2. Using a hand-crimping tool (Tyco Electronics, Manufacturer Part Number 58433-3, or equivalent),
crimp the ring-tongue terminal (Jeeson Terminals Inc., R5-4SA, or equivalent) to the green and
yellow wire (safety ground wire).
3. Connect the safety ground wire to the grounding post on the back of the system by using a #6-32 nut
equipped with a locking washer.

To assemble DC input power wires:
1. Remove the insulation from the ends of the DC power wires, exposing approximately 13 mm (0.5
inch) of copper wire.
Warning - Reversing polarity when connecting DC power wires can permanently damage the PSU or
the appliance.
2. Insert the copper ends into the mating connectors.
3. Tighten the captive screws at the top of the mating connector using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Warning -To protect the PSU from electrostatic discharge, the captive screws must be covered with
the rubber cap before inserting the mating connector into the PSU.
4. Rotate the rubber cap clockwise to fix it over the captive screws.
5. Insert the mating connector into the PSU.

Removing a PSU

Removing a PSU
Important - If you do not install the replacement PSU at this time, leave the failed PSU in place to ensure
proper appliance cooling. This prevents the cooling air from escaping.
1. You must follow the "Safety Instructions" on page5 .
2. Disconnect the power cable from the power source.
3. Open the retention strap that secures the power cable to the PSU.
4. Disconnect the DC power connector from the PSU.
5. Disconnect the safety ground wire from the PSU.
6. Remove the hook-and-straps that hold and secure the system cables, if they interfere with PSU
removal.
7. Press and hold the release latch on the PSU.
8. Pull the PSU out from the appliance.
Important - The appliance needs one working PSU for the normal operation. When two
PSUs are installed, and the appliance is powered on, remove and replace only one PSU
at a time.
Important - When only one working PSU is installed, it must be installed in the first PSU
bay - see the markings on the appliance cover.

Installing a PSU
Best Practice - When you install, hot-swap, or hot-add a new PSU, wait for 10-15
seconds for the appliance to recognize the PSU and determine its status. The PSU
redundancy may not occur until discovery is complete. Wait until the new PSU is
discovered and enabled before you remove the other PSU. The PSU status indicator
turns green to signify that the PSU is functioning properly.
1. You must follow the "Safety Instructions" on page5 .
2. Make sure that both PSUs are of the same type and have the same maximum output power.
Note - The maximum output power (in Watts) is listed on the PSU label.
3. Slide the new PSU into the appliance until the PSU is fully seated, and the release latch snaps into
place.
4. If you opened the hook-and-loop straps, close them to secure the system cables.
5. Connect the safety ground wire to the PSU.
6. Connect the DC power connector to the PSU.
7. Make a loop and secure the power cable to the PSU using the retention strap.
8. Plug the power cable into a power outlet.
