3. Installation
3.1 Modem and computer connections
1. Turnoffalldevices(includingtherouter)tobeconnectedbefore
beginninginstallation.
2. Positiontheaerialupright.
3. ConnectanetworkcablebetweenthexDSL/cablemodemandtheWANport
(WAN)ontherouter.
4. TurnonthexDSL/cablemodem.
5. Connecttheadaptortotherouter’sDCconnection(5VDC)andthentoan
availablewallsocket.Thegreen“PWR“LEDlightswhentherouteristurnedon.
6. Whenstartedtherouterwillconductaself-testwhichlastsabout5seconds.
7. N.B.Ifanyorseveralofthecomputersaretobeconnectedviaanetwork
cable(andnotusewirelesstransfer)anetworkcableisneededbetweenone
oftheLANports(LAN1,2,3,or4)andthecomputer’snetworkcard.Restart
thecomputersthatareconnectedtotherouterwiththenetworkcable.

Connecttheroutertoyourbroadbandmodem/broadbandoutletaccordingto
thepicture.

4.1 Checking the broadband connection
CheckwithyourbroadbandproviderregardingyourtypeofInternetconnection.
DifferentInternetprovidersusedifferentconnectionmethodsforconnectingto
theInternet.Themostcommonconnectionmethodsare:

AutomaticallyassignsIPaddressviaPPPoE.Entertheusernameandpassword
receivedfromyourInternetprovider.
Dynamic
AutomaticallyassignsIPaddressfromaDHCPserver.
Nouserinformationneeded.

4.2 Checking possible firewalls
Ensurethatallcomputersconnectedtotherouterdonothavearewall
programmeactivated,e.g.InternetSecurityorZoneAlarm.
4.3 Checking the computer’s settings
CheckthatthecomputerissettoautomaticallyreceiveanIPaddressandthatthe
computerhasreceivedacorrectIPaddressfromtherouter.

Windows Vista:ClickontheWindows icon,enterCmdinthesearchwindow
andpress[Enter].

(inthiscase192.168.1.4)andgateway(192.168.1.254).
IfthecomputerisnotassignedanIPaddress,refertotheTroubleshootingguide.
4.4 Opening the configuration interface
1. Entertherouter’sIPaddress(192.168.1.254)intheaddresseldofyour
webbrowser(e.g.InternetExplorer)andpress[Enter]toconnecttothe
wirelessrouter.
N.B.
Ifyouareusingamodemwithanin-builtrouteritwillchangeIPaddresses
automaticallytoavoidconictsonthenetwork(e.g.192.168.2.254).

6. ClickonSubmittosavesettingsandnish.
Note:
• SomeInternetprovidersrequirethemodemtobeturnedofffor30-60minutes
afterinputtingtheroutersettingsfortheconnectiontowork.
• Checkthatnorewallprogrammeisinstalled.Ifpresent,deactivateor
congureitfortheinternalnetwork.Thisrouterhasabuilt-inrewall.
4.7 Checking the router’s connection
Therouter’sstatusandsettingscanbechangedatanytimebyclickingonStatus
inthemenu.
LAN IP 1 Address:
Display’stherouter’sinternalIPaddress.
WAN IP Address:
Display’stherouter’sexternalIPaddress.
If“Unavailable”isdisplayedtherouterhasfailedtomake
anInternetconnection.Referto“Troubleshooting”.
4.8 Turning on/off the wireless network
• PressandholdWPSbuttononthebackoftherouterforapprox.5secondsto
turnthewirelessnetworkon/off.
• The”WLAN”indicatordisplaysthewirelessnetwork’sstatus:
Lit (green)–wirelessnetworkisactive
Off –wirelessnetworkisturnedoff

4.9 Wireless network security
Theroutersupportsthefollowingtypesofwirelessnetworkencryption.These
instructionsonlycoverWPA-PSKwhicharethemostcommonlyrecommended
forhomeuse.
Open system
Noencryption.Networkis“open”.
Shared key (WEP) (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Consistsofasecuritykeywhichmustbeprovidedforboththerouterandthecon-
nectedcomputers.When“Sharedkey”isactivatedWEPcannotbedeactivated.
WPA (WiFi Protected Access)
AllowstheusertoauthorisethroughaRADIUS-serverifinuse.
WPA-PSK (WiFi Protected Access & Pre-shared key)
Consistsofapersonalpasswordwhichisgivenbothfortherouterand
connectedcomputers.
WPA2-PSK
AfurtherdevelopmentofWPA-PSK(workscurrentlyonlywithVista).
4.9.1 Configuring WPA-PSK encryption
Recommendedforhomenetworks.
1. ClickonWireless Congurationinthemenuandthen“802.11ng”.
2. Enterthedesirednameforthewirelessnetworkunder“SSID”.SSIDisthe
namethenetworktransmitstocomputerssearchingforaconnectiononthe
wirelessnetwork.
3. SelectWPA-PSKencryption(AuthenticationType)
4. Enterapassword8to63characterpassphraseunderWPA PSK
Passphrase.Useonlyacceptedsymbols.Longerpassphrasesgiveahigher
degreeofsafety.
5. Congureoptionalsettings:
WPA-PSK Re-key
Enablesanddisablestherequirementtore-enterthepassphrase.This
functionisnormallydisabled.
WPA-PSK Re-key Timer
Speciestime(inminutes)forWPARe-keying.
6. ClickonSubmittosaveyoursettings.
7. Therouterwillrestartwiththenewsettings.Allcurrentuserswillbe
disconnectedandmustreconnecttothenetwork.
N.B.
Whenyouhavecongurednetworkencryptionandsavedyoursettingsallcon-
necteduserswillbedisconnected.Theymustreconnecttothewirelessnetwork
andenterthesamepassphraseenteredfortherouter.

4.10. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
WPS(Wi-FiProtectedSetup)isusedmostlytoconnectotherwirelessdevices
whichsupportWPS.
WhenconnectingwithWPStherouterautomaticallyconguresthesecurity
settingsinthenetworkfortherouterandtheconnectedwirelessdevices.
Seethecompleteinstructionmanualforfurtherinformation.
5. Troubleshooting

Properties.
3. CheckthatObtain an IP address automatically andObtain DNS server
address automatically arechosen.

5.2 The PING function

computeryouwantto”ping”andpress[Enter].
- “Replyfrom…”appearswhentheconnectionworksandthepinged
computerison.
- “Requesttimedout”appearswhentheconnectiondoesnotwork(either
becausethepingedcomputerisnotturnedonorcorrectlyconnected).
