This manual contains information for reference by qualified service engineers trained in the repair
of the Z Series Scanner.

2 Tools Required
To maintain the Z Series Scanner the tools listed below are required. The tools are generally
available; they are not the responsibility of Colortrac to supply.
Torx Screwdriver
T10 for all screws
Medium Flat Screwdriver.
6mm blade (Approx.)
Torx Screwdriver
T6 for Microswitch

3 Safety
3.1 Safety Warnings
3.1.1 Electrical
Do NOT remove any covers from the scanner while the power is on or allow an end user to
operate the scanner with ANY covers removed. Engineers must exercise extreme caution while
working on any scanner.
It is advisable to allow the scanner 5 minutes to discharge before removing covers and any of the
boards. The boards may hold a charge and may give a shock if touched.
Please observe anti-static precaution when handling any
electrical boards from the scanner.
3.1.2 Mechanical
The mechanism that operates the lid and the paper handling assembly can trap fingers when
closing. Please handle with care.
3.1.3 Weight
See “Scanner Models”, page 5. One person can safely lift the scanner.
3.1.4 Rotating Rollers
The scanner operates a roller to move the image across the scanner. These rollers may grip ties
and any other similar articles of clothing, as well as long hair if put near the rollers during
operation.
3.1.5 Sharp Edges
The scanner mounting assembly for the TX printers contains some sharp corners, so be careful
when handling these parts.
3.2 EMC Testing
The model conforms to EMC and FCC (Part B). EMC testing is carried out to ensure the Z Series
Scanner does not emit signals that can interfere with other devices, and that no external
interference signals will interfere with it.

4 Scanner Cautions
Do:
Keep the packaging for continued shipment of the scanner.
Keep the Calibration and Stitch target in a safe place for regular use.
Use the approved and supplied cables for the scanner.
Read the operator and installation manual before installation.
Fill out and return the installation form as soon as possible.
Do not’s:
Do not scan paper with any form of metal fastener or post-it notes attached.
Do not allow the scanner to get wet.
Do not drop the scanner.
Do not stand the scanner on its end (packaged or un-packed).
Do not leave the scanner open for any length of time.
Do not stand on the scanner.
Do not balance the scanner on an unsafe surface.
Do not scan thick media that is beyond its maximum limit.
Do not unplug the scanner during a scan sequence.
Do not let an end user remove any panels from the scanner.
Do not use any other power supply other than the approved one supplied
with the scanner.
Do not install the scanner on an un-even surface.
Do not install in a dusty or dirty environment.
Do not allow the Ethernet cable to be pulled forcefully out of the scanner.
NOTE: Before work is carried out on the
scanner the power MUST be switched off
and the power lead removed from the
scanner.
5 Photos Information
Some photos in this manual were taken during pre-production, and at various stages of the Z
Series Scanner’s development. Some colours / backgrounds / designs shown may vary from the
actual scanner being worked on. Some background panels may be shown in the photo to be
removed when they actually don’t need to be; however the instructions are still correct and should
be followed as described.
6 Consumables
Parts that wear according to operator usage are deemed consumables and not replaced under
warranty. Consumables can be purchased from Colortrac. Those Z Series Scanner parts
considered to be consumables are:

8.2 Scanner Operation
The diagram above shows the orientation of the scanner referred to in this manual.
The scanner only scans centre justified. Before scanning ensure the media is inserted at the
correct position as indicated on the Top Lid Cover.
Insert Media FACE UP into the scanner.

9 Removing and Replacing Covers
9.1 Left Hand End Cover
9.1.1 Safety Precautions
Ensure that the power and communication cables are completely disconnected from the scanner unit.
Ensure the scanner is removed from the printer and is positioned on a stable maintenance platform.
9.1.2 Tools
T10 Torx Screwdriver.
9.1.3 Important Information
For all photos, please refer to chapter “5Photos Information” on page 8.
9.1.4 Procedure
1. To remove the Left Hand End
Cover, use the Torx Screwdriver
and remove the four T10 screws
of the End Cover.
2. Remove the Left Hand End
cover, and store safely.
3. Refit in the reverse order.

9.2 Right Hand End Cover
9.2.1 Safety Precautions
Ensure that the power and communication cables are completely disconnected from the scanner unit.
Ensure the scanner is removed from the printer and is positioned on a stable maintenance platform.
9.2.2 Tools
T10 Torx Screwdriver.
9.2.3 Important Information
For all photos, please refer to chapter “5Photos Information” on page 8.
9.2.4 Procedure
1. To remove the Right Hand End
Cover, use the Torx Screwdriver
and remove the four T10 screws
of the End Cover.
2. Gently move the Right Hand End
Cover away to access the cable
connections.
3. Pull the Keypad connections
apart.

4. Pull the LED connections apart.
5. Remove the Right Hand End
cover, and store safely.
6. Refit in the reverse order.
NOTE: When refitting, the flat cable
and extension cable both have Pin 1
marked. Make sure they are both
aligned when fitting together again.

9.3 Top Lid End Cover
9.3.1 Safety Precautions
Ensure that the power and communication cables are completely disconnected from the scanner unit.
Ensure the scanner is removed from the printer and is positioned on a stable maintenance platform.
9.3.2 Tools
T10 Torx Screwdriver.
9.3.3 Important Information

9.3.4 Procedure
Also remove, and refit afterwards:
Left Hand End Cover (See page 12)
Right Hand End Cover (See page 13)
1. To remove the Top Lid Cover,
slide the ruler strip out from the
front of the Lid.
2. Remove the 11 x T10 screws
from the front of the Top Lid
Cover.

3. Remove the T10 screw from the
Cable Cover at the rear of the
scanner.
4. Gently remove the Cable Cover
from the Top Lid Cover.
5. Remove the 11 x T10 screws
from the rear of the Top Lid
Cover.

6. Taking care not to damage the
Top Lid Cover, remove it from the
scanner and store in a safe
place.
7. Refit in the reverse order.

9.4 Interface Board Cover
9.4.1 Safety Precautions
Ensure that the power and communication cables are completely disconnected from the scanner unit.
Ensure the scanner is removed from the printer and is positioned on a stable maintenance platform.
9.4.2 Tools
T10 Torx Screwdriver.
9.4.3 Important Information
For all photos, please refer to chapter “5Photos Information” on page 8.
9.4.4 Procedure
Also remove, and refit afterwards:
Top Lid Cover (See page 18)
1. To remove the Interface Board
Cover, loosen (but not remove)
the 3 x T10 screws on the front
side of the cover.
2. On the rear of the Interface Board
Cover, gently remove the cables
from the cable clips.

3. Loosen (but not remove) the 3 x
T10 screws on the rear side of
the cover.
4. Carefully remove the cover, and
store safely.
5. Refit in the reverse order.

10 Removing and Replacing Components
10.1 Individual Parts Not Replaceable
Drive Rollers (Replace Top CIS Lid Assembly, see page 43)
Pinch Rollers (Replace Lower Chassis, see page 43)
CIS Arrays (Replace Top CIS Lid Assembly, see page 43)
10.2 Interface Board
10.2.1 Safety Precautions
Ensure that the power and communication cables are completely disconnected from the scanner unit.
Ensure the scanner is removed from the printer and is positioned on a stable maintenance platform.
10.2.2 Tools
T10 Torx Screwdriver.
10.2.3 Important Information

10.2.4 Procedure

1. To remove the Interface Board,
carefully remove the Paper
Sensor Cables.
2. Carefully remove all the
remaining cables.
