URW24 QUICK START GUIDE
GETTING STARTED
The purpose of this guide is to go over basic uses and operations of the URW24 reel winder. For information not
covered in this guide consult the URW24 operator’s manual. The URW24 comes as a skid or trailer mounted.
Hydraulic couplers and level wind need to point toward the puller/tensioner.
REEL WINDER POSITIONING
Position the reel winder far enough away from the puller/ tensioner to avoid excessive angles and loads on the level
wind.

REMOVING ARBOR AND INSTALLING REELS
Release the reel winder brake so the arbor bar can be rotated until the “UP for removal decal” is at the top. To do this
follow the instructions below, there is also a label on the reel winder that describes the procedure. Not all URW arbors
have the lift points shown above.
Once the brake is released and the arbor is rotated into position unseat the needle valve and the brake will reapply.

1. Remove the arbor retaining pins, these pins should pull out a few inches and stop. The have dowel pins to
prevent them from coming all of the way out.
2. Remove arbor from reel winder.
3. Remove the items marked in red above and install into reel you are planning on using. Reinstall the parts
removed to retain the reel.
4. Reel and arbor can now be reinstalled into the reel winder. Reverse the procedure above to secure the reel into
the machine.

USES AND OPERATING
The URW24 is versatile, it can be used as a reel for pulling rope, collecting old conductor in reconductor operations or as
a reel stand if needed. Below we will cover some of the different ways it can be used.
HOLDING ROPE FOR PULLING OPERATIONS OR REELSTAND
1. Again release the brake listed on the second page of this guide. Pull enough rope manually from the reel to
attach it to the loading rope reeved onto pulling/tensioning unit. Stop the reel by unseating the needle valve
(turn counterclockwise).
2. Connect hoses between the reel winder and pulling/tensioning unit, also connect to the loading rope as shown
below. Unit should be turned off while connecting the hoses.
3. Set all of the valves on the unit for stringing, see below.
4. Set reel stand pressure to its lowest setting before starting machine. Start machine and slowly turn up the reel
winder circuit pressure. On new 4.0 machines the pressure control knob and activation button are pictured
below. On older puller tensioners the circuit is always live, no activation button. For other models refer to that
unit’s operators manual. See next page for 4.0 type machine reel winder controls.

5. Now tighten up the reel winder behind the machine, with units equipped with an activation button hold the
button down. SLOWLY start to turn up pressure watching for reel movement it will take at least 25-30 bar or
400 psi to get anything to happen. This amount of pressure is required just to release the reel stand brake. The
reel will gain momentum quickly, take it slow and pay attention. Once tight you should have something that
looks like below.
6. Now pull rope through the machine having someone handle the loading rope in front. The reel winder from this
point forward is automatic. When pulling material off of the drum, remove from level winder and disengage
level wind drive handle to avoid wear to the level wind.
7. Set pressure for operation, generally for tensioning out a pressure setting between 50-75 bar or 725-1100 psi will
work well. If pulling material in and using the URW as a take up reel the pressures may need to be increased.
The goal is to use enough pressure to keep the material between the 2 units snug. URW can be run from 50-125
bar or 725 to 1800 psi safely.
