About the Board
This product is a PCI bus compatible interfaceboardwith support forbusmasteroperationandwhich
complieswith IEEE-488.1 and IEEE-488.2. Thecardcan be used in a PCto control communications
with devices that supportthe GPIBinterfaceandperformGPIBbus line data analysis.
You can use thesupplieddriverlibrary to develop applicationsoftwareusinganyprogramming
language that supports the Win32 API routines (such as Visual Basic or Visual C++), or using
LabVIEW.
Features
Complieswith the IEEE-488.2standard
- As thecardcomplies with the IEEE-488.2 standard,you can control any external device that supportsthis
standard.
Data transfer speed 1.5Mbyte/sec max.
- The maximum data transfer speedfor communicationsis1.5Mbyte/sec.
Supports bus masteroperation
- The bus master data transfer functionenableslarge quantitiesof data to be transferredbetween the
board andPCwithout loading the CPU.
Internal 2Kbyte FIFO buffers forsendandreceive
- The boardhasseparate 2Kbyte FIFO buffersfor sendingandreceivingdata, allowingboth small and
large volumesof data to betransferredat high speed.
- Interface messagesalso use a FIFOtoenablehigh-speedtransmission.
Built-inGPIBbusanalyzerfunction
- The boardfeaturesa bus analyzer function. [GP-IB(PCI)F,GP-IB(LPCI)F]
This not only allows the signals on the GPIB bus to analyzed, but also permits signal analysisto be
performedwhile the boardis performingGPIBcommunications
Built-inSPASevent function
- Inaddition to thefunctionsof theearlierGPIBcontroller(µPD7210),theboardalsosupportsthe
SPAS event generatedwhenaserialpolloccurs. Thisgivesyoua high levelof flexibility in
constructingyour system.
Internalhigh-precision timer
- The board includes a high-precision application timer toallowaccurate timemonitoringto be
performedunder Windows.
Long termavailability
- As the board uses a high-speed GPIB controller developed by CONTEC (upwardly compatible with
theµPD7210),reliablelongterm availabilityis ensured.
Diagnosticprogram
- A diagnosticprogram is supplied to support systemdevelopment. The diagnosticprogram canbe used to
check hardwareoperation (interrupts and I/Oaddresses) and to perform simple communication tests with
connected devices.

application software taking advantage of the CONTEC hardware using various programming languages
that supportWin32 API functions, such asVisual Basic and Visual C++.

Thisexplainshowto install the driver library.
Before installingthehardware on the PC, installthe driver library from the API-PAC(W32)
CD-ROM provided with the board.
Thefollowingdescription assumestheoperatingsystemasWindowsXP. Although someuser
interfacesare different dependingon the OSused, the basic procedure is the same.
About the driver to be used
Two GPIBcommunication driverscomewith your board:API-GPIB(98/PC)and
API-GP LV(W32).
API-GPIB(98/PC) providesa CONTECproprietaryfunctioninterface.
API-GPLV(W32) providesa function interface equivalent tothatfrom NationalInstruments
Corporation (hereafterNI), allowingthe GPIB488, GPIB488.2,and VISA functionsof LabVIEW to be
used directly andapplication programscreatedfor NI boardsto run without modification.

Given below is a guideline for easily selectingthe appropriatedriver for the board.

(1) Loadthe CD-ROM [API-PAC(W32)]on yourPC.
(2) Th e API-PAC(W32)Installerwindowappearsautomatically.
Ifthepaneldoesnot appear,run (CD-ROM drive letter):\AUTORUN.exe.
(3) Click on the [Install Developmentor Execution Environment]button.
CAUTION
Beforeinstallingthesoftwarein WindowsXP,Server2003,2000,orNT,loginasa user with
administrator privileges.

(1) The followingdialog boxappearsto select“Driver Type” and“Install Type”.
