Instructions
To have a clearer idea of the features and
capabilities of your remote control, take a moment
to carefully read these instructions
Save for future reference.

1. Introduction
Your Checkmate®V, Model RT-U50, universal remote control
is simple to program, easy to use, and can operate up to four
(5) electronic devices, which include:
CABLE Cable set-top terminals
TV Televisions
VIDEO VCR
DVD DVD players
AUDIO Audio-video receivers, amplifiers, CD players,
cassette players, DMX / DCR Digital Music
converters
Before you can use your remote control, it must be
programmed (set-up) to operate the above devices.
2. Before Getting Started
Some of the special features on your remote control are:
Point and Press™ Programming
Lets you program your TV, VIDEO, DVD and AUDIO
devices without using codes. For more information, see
sections 5, 6 and 7.
SmartKeys™
Program multiple button presses on the [CABLE], [TV] and
[PPV/LOCK] buttons. For more information, see section 9.
Mode Lock™
Your model RT-U50 remote comes “locked” in its cable
operating mode. To operate more functions on your TV,
VCR, DVD or Audio devices, see section 11.
[DEVICE] Button
[DEVICE] button operates only when Mode Lock™ feature
is unlocked. When [DEVICE] is pressed, one of the
power buttons will light up indicating the current device
being operated. While the current mode power button is
illuminated, press a non-illuminated power button to
operate a different device.
[VCR / DVD / VOD] Button
“Toggles” the VCR buttons between Cable “Video-On-
Demand” (VOD), VCR or DVD functions.
Memory Guard™
Eliminates reprogramming after battery changes.
Time Out
Shuts remote off if any button is pressed and held for 45
seconds. This extends battery life in the event the
remote becomes lodged under or between heavy objects.
Reset
Lets you reset your remote to its original default settings.
For more information, see section 12.
3. Installing / Replacing Batteries
Install two (2) new AAA batteries - alkaline type batteries are
recommended for longer operating life. Properly match the “+
/ -”ends of the batteries with the diagram in the battery
compartment.
Low Battery Indication - when the batteries become low
and need to be replaced, the [CABLE], [TV], [VCR], [DVD],
and [AUDIO] buttons will no longer illuminate during operation.
When this happens, install two (2) new AAA alkaline
batteries to restore normal operation to the remote control.
Your remote control has Memory Guard™, which eliminates
reprogramming after battery changes.
4. Programming Cable Set-Top Terminal
Your remote control is pre-programmed to operate
Motorola’s DCT® (digital) and CFT2200 (analog) set-top
terminals. If you are operating either of these cable
set-top terminals, no cable programming is
necessary - proceed to section 6.
If you need to operate another cable set-top terminal, look up
the brand and model number in the Cable Setup Code list. If
you are not sure of your brand and model, contact your cable
company.
To program (setup) your cable set-top terminal...
1. Turn on your cable set-top terminal.
2. Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in

sequence.
3. Press [CABLE]. The [CABLE] button lights up.
4. From the Cable Setup Code list, locate and enter the 3-
digit code for your brand and model.
5. Press [CABLE] to lock in the code. The [CABLE] button
will blink and go out.

5. Programming TV, VIDEO, DVD or AUDIO Devices
If you have a TV that’s operated by remote control, it’s
recommended that you plug it directly into a wall outlet instead
of the cable set-top terminal.
To program (setup) your TV, VCR, DVD or AUDIO...
1. Turn on the device you wish to program (i.e., TV, VCR,
DVD or AUDIO)
2. Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in
sequence.
3. Press [TV] (or [VCR], [DVD] [AUDIO]). The button of the
device you wish to program will light up.
4a. Press and hold [CH Ù] until your device turns off. As
soon as your device turns off, release [CH Ù].
OR
b. From the Setup Code list of your device, locate and
enter the 3-digit code until your device turns off. If
multiple codes are listed, you may have to enter
several 3-digit codes until your device turns off.
5. Press [MUTE].
a. If your device turns back on, press [TV] (or [VCR],
[DVD] [AUDIO]) to lock in the code. The button will
blink and go out.
b. If your device doesn’t turn back on, repeat steps 4
and 5 above until you can turn your device off and
on.

uNOTE when using the Point and Press™ Programming
method (step 4a.). If you find a code that turns your device
off but not back on, you may have gone past the correct
matching code. Try pressing [CH Ú] one step at a time until
you find a code that turns your device back on.
6. Programming TV / VCR Combination
1. First, program your remote for the TV functions
a. Refer to Section 5
b. Find a TV Setup Code that operates the TV functions
(power, vol Ù/Ú, mute, CH Ù/Ú, 0 – 9) of your TV /
VCR unit.
2. Then, program your remote for the VCR functions
a. Refer to Section 5
b. Enter, lock and test each 3-digit VCR Setup Code until
a code is found that operates the VCR functions
(play,
stop, fast-forward, rewind, pause, record) of your
TV / VCR unit.
Note: You can not use the Point and Press™
Programming method to program the VCR functions of
your TV / VCR unit.
7. Programming a 2nd TV, VCR, DVD
Instead of programming an Audio device, you can program
your remote to operate a 2nd TV, 2nd VCR, or 2nd DVD player.
To program a 2
nd TV to your remote’s [AUDIO]
button…
1. Turn on your 2nd TV.
2. Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in
sequence.
3. Press [AUDIO], then [TV]. The [AUDIO] and [TV] buttons
will start blinking.
4a. Press and hold [CH Ù] until your 2nd TV turns off. As
soon as your 2nd TV turns off, release [CH Ù].
OR
b. From the TV Setup Code list, locate and enter the 3-
digit code until your 2nd TV turns off. If multiple codes
are listed, you may have to enter several 3-digit
codes until your 2nd TV turns off.
5. Press [MUTE].
a. If your 2nd TV turns back on, press [AUDIO] to lock in
the code. The [AUDIO] button will blink and go out.
b. If your 2nd TV doesn’t turn back on, repeat steps 4
and 5 above until you can turn your 2nd TV off and
on.
uNOTE when using the Point and Press™ Programming
method (step 4a.). If you find a code that turns your 2nd TV
off but not back on, you may have gone past the correct
matching code. Try pressing [CH Ú] one step at a time until
find a code that turns your 2nd TV back on.
If you want to program a 2nd VCR or DVD player in the above
example, you would press [AUDIO], then [VCR] or [DVD] in
step 3., then follow steps 4. and 5. referring to the Video
Setup Code list.
8. Programming Volume Control
When you first program your remote, volume / mute are
controlled through your TV (except AUDIO volume which
defaults to the AUDIO device).
The volume control options in each mode of the remote are:
CABLE TV (default), Cable or Audio.
TV TV (default), Cable or Audio.
VIDEO TV (default), Cable or Audio.
DVD TV (default), Cable or Audio
AUDIO Audio device (default), Cable or TV.
To control volume / mute through your cable set-top
terminal in the remote’s cable mode…
1. Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in
sequence.
2. Press [CABLE] to select the cable mode. The [CABLE]

button lights up.
3. Press [VOL Ù], then [CABLE] for cable volume. The
[CABLE] button will blink and go out.
To return volume control back to your TV, repeat steps 1. and
2. above, then press [VOL Ù], then [TV] in step 3.
9. Your Remote’s SmartKey™
Your remote has three (3) SmartKeys™ - [CABLE], [TV], and
[PPV / LOCK], that operate in its cable mode. Each
SmartKey™ can be programmed to transmit multiple
functions.
Programming and using the [CABLE] SmartKey™
The [CABLE] button normally turns on / off your cable set-top
terminal. To program the [CABLE] button to transmit multiple
pre-programmed functions, follow the steps below:
1. Press [DEVICE], then [CABLE] to select the cable mode of
your remote. (If [DEVICE] is unlocked).
2. Press [CABLE], then [OK/SEL] together - hold both
buttons down until the [CABLE] button lights up.
3. Press the option number below for the desired functions:

[A] Cable box, TV, VCR, AUDIO & DVD - tunes TV to Ch 3

4. The [CABLE] button will blink and go out, storing the
selected option.
Programming and using the [TV] SmartKey™
The [TV] button normally turns on / off your TV. To program
the [TV] button to transmit multiple pre-programmed functions,
follow the steps below:
1. Press [DEVICE], then [CABLE] to select the cable mode of
your remote.
2. Press [TV], then [OK/SEL] together - hold both buttons
down until the [TV] button lights up.
3. Press the option number below for the desired functions:

4. The [TV] button will blink and go out, storing the selected
option.
Programming and using the [PPV / LOCK] SmartKey™
The [PPV/LOCK] button (Cable mode) normally displays your
cable system’s listing of pay-per-view events. You can
program the [PPV / LOCK] SmartKey™ to tune to a specific
cable channel (ex. 123) with one button press...
1. Press [DEVICE], then [CABLE] to select the cable mode of
your remote.
2. Press [PPV / LOCK], then [OK/SEL] together – hold both
buttons down until the [CABLE] button lights up.
3. In this order, press [1], [2], [3]. The [CABLE] button will
blink and remain illuminated.
4. Press [CH Ù] to lock in this setting. The [CABLE] button
will blink and go out.
To return the [PPV / LOCK] button to its normal default setting,
repeat steps 1 and 2 above, then press [CH Ú].
Remember: When using any SmartKey™ to transmit a
series of functions, be sure to keep your remote aimed at the
devices to ensure all functions are received in their entirety.
10. Code Number Read Back
To identify a 3-digit device code stored under the Point and
Press™ method, follow these steps:
1. Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in
sequence.
2. Press [CABLE] to identify your cable set-top terminal
code. Or [TV], [VCR], [DVD], [AUDIO] to identify these
codes. The selected mode button will be illuminated.
3. Press [INFO]. The illuminated button “blink back” the code
numbers, with a 1 second interval between each digit of
the code.
Example: For code “035”, the remote will blink 10 times, then
3 times, then 5 times.
11. Mode Lock™
Your model RT-U50 remote comes locked in its cable
operating mode. While locked in its cable mode, it can control
all cable set-top operations, as well as power on your TV,
VCR, DVD and Audio devices.
To operate more functions on your TV, VCR, DVD and
Audio devices, you can unlock the remote as follows:
1. Press [CABLE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the [CABLE] button lights up.
2. Press [9, 9, 9]. The [CABLE] button will blink and go out.
To lock your remote back in its cable operating
mode...
1. Press [CABLE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the [CABLE] button lights up.
2. Press [0, 0, 0]. The [CABLE] button will blink and go out.
12. Resetting Your Remote Control
To reset you remote to its factory default settings...
1. Press [OK /SEL], then [LAST] together – hold both buttons
down until the [CABLE], [TV], [VCR], and [AUDIO] buttons
blink in sequence two times (approx. 5 seconds).

13. Helpful Tips & Troubleshooting
1. Your remote is equipped with 2 quick- programming
labels on the back of its case.
a. Point and Press™ Programming - This will help you
quickly program the remote without using codes.
b. Mode-Lock™ - Your model RT-U50 comes “locked” in
its cable-operating mode. To operate more functions
on your TV, VCR, DVD and audio devices, you can
unlock your remote using the simple instructions on
the back of your remote or refer to section 11.
2. The illuminated mode button will remain on while the
remote is in a programming mode. In the absence of an
entry, the button will go out after approx.20 seconds.
When locking in your devices, the illuminated mode button
will blink and go out.
3. When using the Point and Pressprogramming method,
you may find a code that turns your device off but not
back on. If this happens…
a. the correct code has not been found. Continue
pressing [CH Ù] until your devices turn on and off.
b. you may have gone past the correct matching code.
Try pressing [CH Ú] one step at a time until find a
code that turns your cable set-top terminal back on.
4. NOTE: If you have a Scientific Atlanta 8500 series cable
set-top terminal, press [CH Ù] or [CH Ú] to turn on the
cable set-top terminal. Press [CABLE] to turn these cable
set-top terminals off.
5. If you have any questions concerning the operation of
your cable set-top terminal, contact your cable operator.
6. Your remote control has Memory Guard™, which
eliminates reprogramming after battery changes.
