theeasy,cost-effectivewaytoprovideyourfamilywith
whole-homesafety.AllWireless RadioLinkAlarms
communicatewitheachotherwithoutwiresorconnectors.
When oneAlarmsounds,theyall sound.Thisprovidesyour
familywithan earlierwarning of potentialdanger,and gives
you moretimetoreact.
Thecommunicationdistance(range)betweenanytwo
Wireless RadioLinkAlarmsistypically100feet (30 meters)
insideofahome.Somefeaturesofahome,suchasthe
numberof floors, number/sizeof rooms,furnitureand types
ofbuilding materialsusedmayreducetherangeofthe
Alarms.Examplesinclude:suspendedceilings,ductwork,
largemetallicappliances(refrigerators)andmetalstuds.A
featureofWireless RadioLinkAlarmsisthattheyoperate
asameshnetwork.AllAlarmswill repeatanyalarmsignal
thatisreceivedtoall otherWireless RadioLinkAlarms.
Interferencefromstructuralconditionscan beovercomeby
addingadditionalAlarmstoroutethewireless signalaround
obstructions.
IMPORTANT!
Therangeand properoperationofanywireless device
will varydependingonitssurroundings.It isveryimportant
thateachAlarmistestedindividuallybeforeand after
installationtomakesurethatallAlarmsrespondproperly.
TheWireless RadioLinkAlarmsarenottobeused
outdoorsortotransmitbetweenbuildings.TheAlarmswill
notcommunicateproperlyundertheseconditions.
Metalobjectsandmetallicwallpapermayinterferewith
signalsfromwireless Alarms.Alarmsshouldbetested
afterchangestoyourhomesuchasremodeling,moving
furniture,andwithmetaldoorsopenedand closed.

communicatepotentialfireswithallotherWirelessRadio
LinkSmokeAlarms.

1. RECOMMENDEDLOCATIONSFORALARMS
Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthe
bedrooms.Trytoprotecttheexitpathasthebedroomsare
usuallyfarthestfromtheexit.Ifmorethanonesleeping
areaexists,locateadditionalalarmsineachsleeping area.
Locateadditionalalarmstoprotectanystairwayas
stairwaysactlikechimneys forsmokeandheat.
Locateatleast onealarmoneveryfloorlevel.
Locatean alarmineverybedroom.
Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectrical
appliancesareoperated(i.e.portableheatersor
humidifiers).
Locatean alarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleeps
withthedoorclosed.Thecloseddoormaypreventthe
alarmfromwaking thesleeper.
Smoke,heat, and combustionproductsrisetotheceiling
and spreadhorizontally.Mountingthesmokealarmonthe
ceiling inthecenteroftheroomplacesitclosesttoall
pointsintheroom. Ceilingmountingispreferredinordinary
residentialconstruction.
Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullyto
avoidthermalbarriersthatmayformattheceiling.For
moredetails,see MOBILEHOMEINSTALLATIONbelow.
Whenmountingan alarmon theceiling,locateitata
minimumof4”(10 cm)fromthesidewall(see Figure1).
When mountingthealarmonthewall, it isbest tousean
insidewallwiththetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof
4”(10 cm)andamaximumof12”(30.5cm)belowthe
ceiling,(see Figure1).
Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayor
largeroomif thehallwayorroomismorethan30 feet(9.1
m)long.
InstallSmokeAlarmson sloped,peakedorcathedral
ceilingsatorwithin3ft(0.9m)ofthehighestpoint
(measuredhorizontally).NFPA72 states: “Smokealarms
inroomswithceiling slopesgreaterthan 1footin8feet
(.3min2.4m)horizontallyshall belocatedonthehighside
oftheroom.”NFPA 72states: “Arowofdetectorsshall be
spacedandlocatedwithin3ft(0.9m)ofthepeakofthe
ceiling measuredhorizontally”(see Figure3).

MOBILEHOMEINSTALLATION
Modernmobilehomeshavebeendesignedand builttobe
energyefficient.Installsmokealarmsasrecommended
above,refertoRECOMMENDEDLOCATIONSandFigure
1.Inoldermobilehomesthatarenotwell insulated
comparedtopresentstandards,extremeheatorcoldcan
betransferredfromtheoutsidetotheinsidethroughpoorly
insulatedwallsand roof. Thismaycreateathermalbarrier
thatcan preventthesmokefromreaching an alarm
mountedontheceiling.Insuchunits,installthesmoke
alarmon aninsidewallwiththetop edgeofthealarmata
minimumof4”(10cm) and amaximumof12”(30.5cm)
belowtheceiling(see Figure1).If you arenotsureabout
theinsulationinyourmobilehome,orifyou noticethatthe
outerwallsandceilingareeitherhotorcold,install the
alarmonaninsidewall.Forminimumprotection,install at
leastonealarmclosetothebedrooms.Foradditional
protection,see SINGLEFLOORPLANinFigure2.

Supplyand returnregistersusedforforcedairheating
and airconditioning.
Ceiling fansandotherhighairflowareas.
Bathroomswhichcontainatuborshower.
Ingeneral,alarmsshouldnotbelocated:
Inthegarage. Productsof combustionarepresent when
you startyourautomobile.
Inanareawherethetemperaturemayfallbelow40ºFor
riseabove100ºF.
Industyareas.Dustparticlesmaycausenuisance
alarmsorfailuretoalarm.
Inveryhumidareasornearabathroom.Moistureor
steamcancausenuisancealarms.
Nearfluorescentlights.Electronic “noise”maycause
nuisancealarms.
3. INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS
1. Holdbasefirmlyand twistthemounting bracket
counterclockwisetoseparateitfromthebase.
2. Holdthemountingbracketagainsttheceiling(orwall)
sotheverticalmountingslotisalignedinthe12 o’clock
position andtracearoundtheinsideofthemounting
slots(verticaland horizontalmounting).
3. Puttheunitwhereitwon’tgetcoveredwithdustwhen
you drillthemountingholes.
4. Usinga3/16”(5mm)drillbit,drillaholethroughthe
centeroftheovaloutlinesyou traced.
5. Inserttheplasticscrewanchors(intheplasticbag with
screws)intotheholes.Tapthescrewanchorsgently
withahammer,ifnecessary,until theyareflushwith
theceilingorwall.(see Figure4).
6. Attachthemountingbrackettotheceiling orwall.
7. Installthebattery(included).Openthebatterydrawer.
Matchtheterminalsontheend ofthebatterywiththe
terminalson theunit. Match “+”to “+”and “-”to “-.”
Pushthebatteryinuntil itsnapsinsecurelyandcannot
beshakenloose.Ifthebatteryisnotsnappedin
completely,theunitcannotreceivebatterypower.(see
Figure5)
NOTE:Afteryou install thebattery,thepower
indicatorlightmayflash.(Iftheunitalarms,the
lightwillblinkrapidly,andthehornwillrepeatedly
sound 3beeps,pause,3beeps.)
8. AttachtheSmokeAlarmtothemountingbracket. Line
up theguideson thealarm’sbasewiththeguideson
themountingbracket.Whenguidesarelinedup,turn
thebaseclockwise(right)untilit snapsintoplace.
9. Test theSmokeAlarm. See “WeeklyTesting.”

OPERATION:Thesmokealarmisoperatingonceafresh
batteryisinstalledandtestingiscomplete.Whenproducts
ofcombustion aresensed,theunitsoundsaloud 85db
pulsating alarmuntiltheairiscleared.
FLASHINGLEDLIGHT: Thissmokealarmisequippedwith
aflashing redindicatorlight.Thelightwillflashevery30 -
40 secondstoindicatethatthesmokealarmisreceiving
power
SMOKE SENSINGCHAMBEROPERATION:Thisalarm
will “chirp”ifanyofthecomponentsinthesmokesensing
chamberfail.Thischirpwill occurbetweentheflashesof
theredLEDindicatorlight.(Ifthechirpoccursatthesame
timeastheredLEDflash,see Section6forlowbattery
information.)
TESTING: Testbypushingthetestbuttononthecoverand
holdingitdownforaminimumof5seconds.Thiswillsound
thealarmiftheelectroniccircuitry,horn,andbatteryare
working. Ifnoalarmsounds, theunithasdefectivebatteries
orotherfailure.Youcanalsotestthealarmbyblowing
smokeintoit.
TESTTHEALARMWEEKLYTOENSUREPROPER
OPERATION.Erraticorlowsoundcomingfromyouralarm
mayindicateadefectivealarm, andit shouldbereturnedfor
service.
5. NUISANCEALARMS

Smokealarmsaredesignedtominimizenuisancealarms.
Cigarettesmokewill notnormallysetoff thealarm,unless
thesmokeisblowndirectlyintothealarm.
Combustion particlesfromcooking maysetoff thealarmif
thealarmislocatedclosetothecookingarea.Large
quantitiesofcombustibleparticlesaregeneratedfrom
spillsorwhenbroiling.Using thefanonarangehood
whichventstotheoutside(non-recirculatingtype)willalso
helpremovethesecombustibleproductsfromthekitchen.
Ifthealarmdoessound,check forfiresfirst.Ifafireis
discovered, getoutandcallthefiredepartment. If no fireis
present, check tosee ifoneofthereasonslistedinSection
2mayhavecausedthealarm.
6. MAINTENANCE
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
Toreplacethebattery,removethealarmfromthemounting
bracketbyrotatingthealarmcounterclockwise.
TheSmokeAlarmispoweredbya9Vcarbonzincbattery
(alkalineandlithiumbatteriesmayalsobeused).Afresh
batteryshouldlastforoneyearundernormaloperating
conditions.Thisalarmhasalowbatterymonitorcircuit
whichwillcausethealarmto “chirp”approximatelyevery
30 -40secondsforaminimumofseven(7)days,
accompanied bytheredLEDflash,whenthebatterygets
low.
Replacethebatterywhenthisconditionoccurs.
CLEANINGYOURALARM
Toclean youralarm,removeitfromthemountingbracket
asoutlinedinthebeginningofthissection.Youcanclean
youralarmbyusingcompressedairoryourvacuum
cleanerhosetobloworsuck airthrough theopenings
aroundtheperimeterof thealarm. Theoutsideof thealarm
can bewipedwithadampcloth.
Aftercleaning,reinstallyouralarm.Testyouralarmby
usingthetestbutton.
7. LIMITATIONSOFSMOKEALARMS
WARNING:PLEASEREADCAREFULLYAND
THOROUGHLY
Smokealarmsaredevicesthatcanprovideearlywarning
ofpossiblefiresatareasonablecost;however,alarms
havesensinglimitations.Ionizationtypealarmsoffera
broad rangeoffiresensingcapabilitiesbutarebetterat
detecting fastflamingfiresthanslowsmoldering fires.
Photoelectricalarmssensesmolderingfiresbetterthan
flamingfires.Homefiresdevelop indifferentwaysand are
oftenunpredictable.
Neithertypeofalarm(photoelectricorionization)isalways
best, andagivenalarmmaynotalwaysprovidewarningof
afire.
Abatterypoweredalarmmusthaveabatteryofthe
specifiedtype,ingood conditionandinstalledproperly.
A.C.poweredalarmswillnotoperateiftheA.C.power
hasbeencutoff,suchasbyanelectricalfireoranopen
fuse.
Smokealarmsmustbetestedregularlytomakesurethe
batteriesandthealarmcircuitsareingoodoperating
condition.
Smokealarmscannot providean alarmifsmokedoesnot
reachthealarm.Therefore,smokealarmsmaynotsense
firesstarting inchimneys,walls,on roofs, on theotherside
of acloseddoororonadifferentfloor.
Ifthealarmislocatedoutsidethebedroomorona
different floor, it maynot wakeupasoundsleeper.
Theuseofalcoholordrugsmayalsoimpairone’sability
tohearthesmokealarm.Formaximumprotection,asmoke
alarmshouldbeinstalledineachsleeping areaonevery
levelofahome.
Althoughsmokealarmscan helpsavelivesbyproviding
an earlywarning ofafire,theyarenotasubstituteforan
insurancepolicy.Homeownersandrentersshouldhave
adequateinsurancetoprotecttheirlivesandproperty.
8. GOODSAFETYHABITS
DEVELOPANDPRACTICEAPLANOFESCAPE
Makeafloorplanindicatingalldoorsandwindowsandat
leasttwo(2)escaperoutesfromeachroom.Secondstory
windowsmayneedaropeorchainladder.
Haveafamilymeetinganddiscussyourescapeplan,
showingeveryonewhattodoincaseof fire.
Determineaplaceoutsideyourhomewhereyouallcan
meetifafireoccurs.
Familiarizeeveryonewiththesoundofthesmokealarm
and trainthemtoleaveyourhomewhentheyhearit.
Practiceafiredrillatleasteverysixmonths.Practice
allowsyoutotestyourplanbeforeanemergency. You may
notbeabletoreachyourchildren.It isimportanttheyknow
whattodo.
WHATTO DO WHENTHEALARMSOUNDS
Leaveimmediatelybyyourescapeplan.Everysecond
counts,sodon’twastetimegetting dressedorpicking up
valuables.
Inleaving, don’topenanyinsidedoorwithoutfirstfeeling
itssurface.Ifhot, orifyousee smokeseeping through
cracks, don’topenthatdoor!Instead, useyouralternateexit.
Iftheinsideofthedooriscool,placeyourshoulderagainst
it,openitslightlyandbereadytoslamitshutifheatand
smokerushin.
Stayclosetotheflooriftheairissmoky.Breathe
shallowlythroughacloth,wet ifpossible.
Onceoutside,gotoyourselectedmeeting placeand
makesureeveryoneisthere.
Callthefiredepartmentfromyourneighbor’shome-not
fromyours!
Don’t returntoyourhomeuntilthefireofficialssaythat it
isall righttodo so.
Therearesituationswhereasmokealarmmaynotbe
effectivetoprotectagainstfireasstatedintheNFPA
Standard72. Forinstance:

9. NFPAREQUIREDPROTECTION
TheNationalFireProtectionAssociation’sStandard72
readsasfollows:
2-2.1.1.1Smokealarmsshallbeinstalledoutsideeach
separatesleeping areaintheimmediatevicinityofthe
bedroomsandoneachadditionalstoryofthefamilyliving
unit, including basementsand excluding crawlspacesand
unfinishedattics.Innewconstruction,asmokealarmshall
beinstalledineachsleeping room.
A-2.5.2.1SmokeDetection-AreMoreSmokeDetectors
Desirable?Therequirednumberofsmokealarmsmight
notprovidereliableearlywarning protection forthose
areasseparatedbyadoorfromtheareasprotected bythe
requiredsmokealarms.
Forthisreason,itisrecommendedthatthehouseholder
considertheuseofadditionalsmokealarmsforthose
areasforincreasedprotection.Theadditionalareas
includethebasement,bedrooms,diningroom,furnace
room,utilityroom,and hallwaysnotprotectedbythe
requiredsmokealarms.Theinstallationofthesmoke
alarmsinthekitchen,attic(finishedorunfinished),or
garageisnormallynotrecommended,astheselocations
occasionallyexperienceconditionsthatcanresultin
improperoperation.
Thisequipmentshouldbeinstalledinaccordancewiththe
NationalFireProtectionAssociation’sStandard72(NFPA,
BatterymarchPark, Quincy,MA02269).

10. SERVICEAND WARRANTY
Ifafterreviewing thismanualyoufeelthatyoursmoke
alarmisdefectiveinanyway,do nottamperwiththeunit.
Returnitforservicingto:ConvoySecurity.(See Warranty
forin-warrantyreturns)
FIVE YEARLIMITEDWARRANTY
ConvoySecuritywarrantstotheoriginalpurchaserthat
theenclosedsmokealarm(butnotthebattery)willbe
free fromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipor
design undernormaluseandserviceforaperiodof five
yearsfromthedateofpurchase.Theobligationof
ConvoySecurityunderthiswarrantyislimitedto
repairingorreplacingthesmokealarmoranypart
whichwefind tobedefectiveinmaterial,workmanship
ordesign,free ofchargetothecustomer,uponsending
thesmokealarmwithproofofdateofpurchase,
postageand returnpostageprepaid,toWarranty
ServiceDepartment, ConvoySecurity.
Thiswarrantyshallnotapplytothesmokealarmifit
hasbeendamaged,modified,abusedoralteredafter
thedateofpurchaseorifitfailstooperatedueto
