A
31A Assemble the grating pieces received with this stage,
as you did before.
31B Remove some of the grating by cutting along the red lines
indicated above.
31C Retrieve the leftover grating piece from the previous stage
and position it next to the piece from this stage, as shown.
Glue the two parts together, making sure they are aligned,
then leave to dry.
Dummy gun mounts, guns and grating pieces
E
31E The two pieces should now look like this.
1 Gun carriages. 2 Guns. 3 Dummy gun mounts.
4 Wooden strip 2 x 3 x 300mm. 5 Grating pieces.
B
C
31D Once dry, cut along the red lines to create two grating

Assembly Guide Stage 32
A
32A Retrieve the wooden strip from Stage 15. Cut eight 12mm
lengths from the strip.
32B There are two ways to build ladders, and this is the first.
Start by glueing one of the 12mm lengths into the end groove of
one of the ladder sides. 32C Continue along the ladder side, glueing 12mm strips into
each of the grooves.
Dummy gun mounts, guns and barrels
E
32E The second method of assembling the ladders is to
first glue a 12mm strip into the grooves at either end of one
ladder side.
1 Guns. 2 Barrels. 3 Dummy gun mounts. 4 Gun
carriages.
B
C
32D Apply a drop of glue to the edge of each step and fit it into
the corresponding groove of the other upright. Check that the
slots and the steps are aligned.

72
32F Then glue the other ladder side to the free ends of the
12mm lengths. 32G Apply a drop of glue to each of the grooves in the sides and
then slide in the remaining 12mm lengths.
32H Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and corners of the
assembled ladder.
32I Paint the ladder with a clear varnish and leave to dry.
FG
I
J
K
32J Test-fit the ladder in the framed hole, as indicated above.

Assembly Guide Stage 33
A
33A Cut the two strips from the fret boards and remove the
squares from them.
33C Hold one of the gun port strips against the side of the forecastle, as shown, to
check that it fits the curvature of the frames.
Gun port strips, nails and dummy
gun mounts
1 Nails. 2 Gun port strips. 3 Dummy gun mounts.

3
33B Smooth the edges of the strips
with sandpaper.
E
33E Separate four dummy gun
mounts from the fret board and
smooth them with sandpaper.
Before continuing with this step,
it is advisable that you look at
the following steps to see how
the parts will be used. Glue
mounts over the two end ports,
and then glue two mounts onto
the middle port, either side of
the lines marked in the previous
step, so that they will fit either
side of the frame.
74
33F Paint the inside of the strip that will
be visible above the forecastle deck with
wood stain, as shown.
33G Apply glue to the contact points between the strip and the frames and deck,
then hold the strip in place.
33H Fix the strip in place with some nails, securing it to the frames and the decks. Be
careful not to damage the forecastle deck when doing this.
33I The front of the strip should be flush
with the frame, matching the curvature
exactly, as shown.
FG
I
J
K
33J Prepare the second strip in the same way and fix it to the
port side of the forecastle.
33K This stage is now complete. Keep any materials you
haven’t used, as they will be needed in future stages.

Check that it is flush with the surrounding parts
and adjust the shape if necessary.
Gun port strip and ladder parts

previous strips.
1 Ladder sides. 2 Gun port strip.

previous strips.
78
35F Apply glue to the contact points on the decks and frames.
35G Fix the strip to the frames with nails, as with
the other strips.
35I Cut the strips so they are flush with the
transom, as indicated by the red lines.
FG
I
J
K
35J Use some sandpaper to round and smooth the
ends of the strips.
35K This stage is now complete. Keep any materials you

H
35H Here you can see how the strip should look when in place.
79
Assembly Guide Stage 36
A
36A Remove the gun port strips from the fret and then remove
the squares from them. Smooth the strips with sandpaper.
36B Test-fit the strip along the starboard side of the ship, up against the strip fitted in
the previous stage.
36C Mark the points where the frame
blocks some of the gun port.
Gun port strips, dummy gun mounts
and barrels
E
36E If any of the mounts
obstruct the fit of the strip with
the frames or deck, then use a
knife to remove small amounts
of them until they fit correctly.
1 Dummy gun mounts. 2 Gun port strips. 3 Barrels.
BC
36D Glue a dummy gun mount over the
first two ports in the strip. Make sure that
the mount at the front of the strip doesn’t
pass the line made in the previous step.
D
1
23
80
36F Apply glue to the sides of the frames and deck that will be
in contact with the strip.
36G Fit the strip into place and then nail into position
to secure it.
36H Glue two more mounts over the inside of the two rear
ports (arrows).
36I Sand the aft edges of the strips flush
with the transom.
FG
K
H
I
36J Repeat Steps B-H to fit the second strip to the port side.

37A Smooth
the edges of the
strip received
with this stage.
37B Test-fit the strip in place, above the strip from the previous
stage, engaging it with the one in front.
37C Paint the
inner surface of
the strip with
wood stain.
Gun port strip and guns
E
37E Place the strip into position and
then secure to the frames with nails,
as before.
1 Guns. 2 Gun port strip. 3 Gun carriages.
B
C

frames and decks that will be in
contact with the strip.
D

3
82
37F This is what the strip should look
like from the inside. 37G Remove the part of
the strip that extends past
the transom using a sanding
block or file.
37I Use a file to smooth the surface of the strips along the
starboard side of the ship. Remove the heads of any nails
that aren’t flush.
FG
I
JK
37J Run your fingers along the
surface of the strips to check for
any uneven areas. The surface
needs to be completely smooth.
37K This stage is now complete. Keep any
materials you haven’t used, as they will be
needed in future stages.
H
37H Here you can see that the strip is flush with the transom;
this is how your parts should look.
83
Assembly Guide Stage 38
A
38A Smooth the edges of the strip
received with this stage.
38B Test-fit the strip in place, flush with
the strip below and engaged with the one
in front. Then, paint the inner surface of
the strip with wood stain.
Gun port strip and guns
E
38E Secure the strip to the frames
with nails, as before. Once dry, cut
and sand the end of the strip flush
with the transom.
1 Guns. 2 Gun port strip. 3 Gun carriages.
B
C
38D Place the strip into position, engaging it
properly with the strip in front.
D
1
2
3
38C Apply glue to the sides of the frames and decks that will
be in contact with the strip.
84
38G Starting from the bow, file the frames to try and create a
smooth curve in preparation for the planking.
38I Recover one of the planking strips, supplied with
Stage 23, and hold it around the frames at the bow.
Slowly move the plank towards the keel. The plank
should be flush with the frames at all points.
FG
I
J
K
38J File the frames at the stern to
create a smooth curve for the strips.
As with the bow, check the shape
with a planking strip. 38K This stage is now complete.
Keep any materials you haven’t used,
as they will be needed in future stages.
H
38H In the mid section of the hull there is less of a
curve between the frames, so you can use the large
sanding block here.
38F Sand the strips to prepare them for the coating strips. You
need to make the surface as smooth and flush as possible. Sand
along the strips, working from bow to stern.
