Storage system hardware
Front-end and back-end components used in ME4 Series enclosures are described herein.
Certain modules within the enclosure are replaceable as described in Module removal and replacement. Modules and other components
that can be replaced are dened below:
• CRU: Customer-replaceable Unit
• FRU: Field-replaceable Unit (requires service expertise)
These two terms are used throughout this document.

Locate the service tag
Your ME4 Series storage system is identied by a unique Service Tag and Express Service Code.
The Service Tag and Express Service Code are found on the front of the system by pulling out the information tag. Alternatively, the
information might be on a sticker on the back of the storage system chassis. This information is used to route support calls to appropriate
personnel.
NOTE: Quick Resource Locator (QRL):
• The QRL code contains information unique to your system. It can be found on the information tag and the Setting Up Your Dell
EMC ME4 Series Storage System hard copy document provided with your ME4 Series enclosure.
• Scan the QRL to get immediate access to your system information, using your smart phone or tablet.
Enclosure congurations
The storage system supports three controller enclosure congurations.
• 2U (rack space) controller enclosure – see Figure 1. 2U12 enclosure system—front orientation and Figure 2. 2U12 enclosure system—
rear orientation: holds up to 12 low prole (1-inch high) 3.5" form factor disk drive modules in a horizontal orientation.

• 2U (rack space) controller enclosure – see Figure 4. 2U24 enclosure system—front orientation and Figure 5. 2U24 enclosure system—
rear orientation : holds up to 24 low prole (5/8 inch high) 2.5" form factor disk drive modules in a vertical orientation.
• 5U (rack space) controller enclosure – see Figure 6. 5U84 enclosure system—front orientation and Figure 7. 5U84 enclosure system—
rear orientation: holds up to 84 low prole (1-inch high) 3.5" form factor disk drive modules in a vertical orientation within the disk
drawer. Two vertically-stacked drawers each hold 42 disks. If used, 2.5" disks require 3.5" adapters. These same chassis form factors
are used for supported expansion enclosures.
These same chassis form factors are used for supported expansion enclosures; albeit with dierent I/O modules (IOMs). Each redundant
CRU module is hot pluggable and replaceable on site. Whereas the 2U12 and 2U24 enclosures support single or dual-IOM conguration, the
5U84 enclosure supports dual-IOM conguration exclusively. If a partner controller fails, the storage system will fail over and run on a single
controller until the redundancy is restored. For 5U84 enclosures, an IOM must be installed in each IOM slot. For 2U enclosures, an IOM
must be installed in IOM slot A, and either an IOM or IOM-blank must be installed in IOM-slot B to ensure sucient airow through the
enclosure during operation.
NOTE:
Throughout this guide—and the management interfaces documents used with this guide—I/O module (IOM) is a general term
denoting either a controller module or an expansion module.
Enclosure management
The enclosure is mechanically and electrically compliant with the Storage Bridge Bay (SBB) v 2.1 specication. SBB IOMs actively manage
the enclosure. Each module has a SAS expander with its own storage enclosure processor (SEP) that provides a SES target for a host to
interface to through the ANSI SES Standard. If one of these modules fails, the other module continues to operate.
Management interfaces
Upon completing the hardware installation, you can access the controller module’s web-based management interface—ME Storage
Manager—to congure, monitor, and manage the storage system. The controller module also provides a CLI in support of command entry
and scripting. For details, see the Dell EMC ME4 Series Storage System CLI Guide for your system.
Operation
CAUTION: Operation of the enclosure with any CRU modules missing will disrupt the airow, and the enclosure will not receive
sucient cooling. It is essential that all slots hold modules before the enclosure system is used. Empty drive slots (bays) in 2U
enclosures must hold blank drive carrier modules.
• Read the module bay caution label axed to the module being replaced.
• Replace a defective power cooling module (PCM) with a fully operational PCM within 24 hours. Do not remove a defective PCM unless
you have a replacement model of the correct type ready for insertion.
• Before removal/replacement of a PCM or power supply unit (PSU), disconnect power supply from the module to be replaced. See
Replacing a power cooling module.
• Read the hazardous voltage warning label axed to power cooling modules.
CAUTION: 5U84 enclosures only
• To prevent overturning, drawer interlocks stop users from opening both drawers at the same time. Do not attempt to force open a
drawer when the other drawer in the enclosure is already open. In a rack containing more than one 5U84 enclosure, do not open more
than one drawer per rack at a time.
• Read the hot surface label axed to the drawer. Operating temperatures inside enclosure drawers can reach 60ºC. Take care when
opening drawers and removing disk drives in carrier (DDICs).
• Due to product acoustics, ear protection should be worn during prolonged exposure to the product in operation.
• Open drawers must not be used to support any other objects or equipment.

You can attach or remove the optional 2U enclosure bezel. Locate the bezel, and while grasping it with your hands, face the front panel of
the 2U12 or 2U24 enclosure. A partial view of a 2U12 enclosure is shown in Figure 3. Attaching or removing the 2U enclosure front bezel.
1 Hook the right end of the bezel onto the right ear cover of the storage system.
2 Insert the left end of the bezel into the securing slot until the release latch snaps in place.
3 Secure the bezel with the keylock as shown in Figure 3. Attaching or removing the 2U enclosure front bezel.
To remove the bezel from the 2U enclosure, reverse the order of the preceding steps.

Enclosure variants
The 2U chassis can be congured as a controller enclosure ME4012, ME4024, or an expansion enclosure ME412ME424 as shown in Table 1.
2U12 enclosure variants and Table 2. 2U24 enclosure variants. The 5U chassis can be congured as a controller enclosure ME4084 or an
expansion enclosure ME484 as shown in Table 3. 5U84 enclosure variants.
NOTE:
The 2U and 5U core products—including key components and CRUs–are described herein. Although many CRUs dier between the
form factors, the IOMs are common to 2U12, 2U24, and 5U84 chassis. The IOMs are introduced in 2U enclosure core product and
cross-referenced from 5U84 enclosure core product.
2U12
2U12 enclosures consist of 12 x LFF (Large Form Factor) disk drives and 12 x HFF (Hybrid Form Factor) disk drives.

The design concept is based on an enclosure subsystem together with a set of plug-in modules.

2U enclosure rear panel
Numeric designators on PCMs and alphabetic designators on IOMs indicate slot sequencing for modules used in 2U enclosures. PCM and
IOM modules are available as CRUs. The ME4 Series RBODs use 4-port controller modules. These RBODs support the ME412/ME424/
ME484 EBODs for optionally adding storage.

2U rear panel components
This section describes the controller module and expansion module components.
Controller module
The top slot for holding IOMs is designated A and the bottom slot is designated B. The face plate details of the IOMs show the modules
aligned for use in A. In this orientation, the IOM latch appears at the bottom of the module. It is shown in closed/locked position. The
diagrams below identify ports.

The 5U84 supports up to 84 DDIC modules populated within two drawers (42 DDICs per drawer; 14 DDICs per row).
NOTE:
• The 5U84 does not ship with DDICs installed. DDICs ship in a separate container, and must be installed into the enclosure drawers
during product installation and setup.
• To ensure sucient circulation and cooling throughout the enclosure, all PSU slots, cooling module slots, and IOM slots must
contain a functioning CRU. Do not replace a faulty CRU until the replacement is available and in hand.

NOTE: 5U84 controller enclosures support dual-controller only. If a partner controller fails, the array will fail over and run on a
single controller until the redundancy is restored. Each IOM slot must be occupied to ensure sucient airow through the
controller during operation.
5U84 rear panel components
This section describes the rear-panel controller modules, expansion module, power supply module, and fan cooling module.
Controller modules
The 5U84 controller enclosure uses the same IOMs used by 2U12 and 2U24 enclosures. See Controller modules, Figure 15. 4-port FC/iSCSI
controller module detail, and .4-port HD mini-SAS controller module detail.
Expansion module
The 5U84 expansion enclosure uses the same IOM used by 2U12 and 2U24 enclosures. See Controller and expansion modules.
Power supply module
This gure shows the power supply unit used in 5U controller enclosures and optional 5U84 expansion enclosures.

NOTE: The product rating label on the PSU faceplate may show voltage of 200–240 V and current of 13 A.
