Hardware replacement overview
The content in this document is directed at customers who are responsible for replacing Dell EMC
PowerProtect X400 capacity cube and X400 platform cube components.
The X400 capacity cube provides the deduplicated storage capacity, in a scale-out model, to
support a wide range of data protection capacity needs. It is a 2U single-node Dell EMC
PowerEdge R740xd server. An X400 capacity cube can be either a Hybrid or All Flash model. The
Hybrid model is referred to as the X400H capacity cube and has a maximum useable capacity of 96
TB. (The term Hybrid refers to the fact that the cube contains hard disk drives (HDDs) for main
data storage and solid state drives (SSDs) for performance optimization.) The All Flash model is
referred to as the X400F capacity cube and has a maximum useable capacity of 112 TB.
A PowerProtect X400 Appliance includes one X400 platform cube and one to four homogeneous
X400 capacity cubes. The minimum appliance configuration is one X400 platform cube and one
X400 capacity cube for a total of 4U. The maximum appliance configuration is one X400 platform
cube and four X400 capacity cubes for a total of 10U. X400H capacity cubes and X400F capacity
cubes cannot be mixed in the same X400 Appliance.

see the PowerProtect X400 Appliance Hardware Configuration and Installation Guide .
The following table lists the customer-replaceable unit (CRU) procedures for the X400 capacity
cube components. To replace one of these components, go to the required replacement
procedure.

The following table lists the customer-replaceable unit (CRU) procedures for the X400 platform
cube. Power supply unit replacement is the only CRU procedure for the X400 platform cube.

X400 capacity cube serial number
You can identify a X400 capacity cube by its serial number. The serial number is located on the
blue label on the information tag pull out tab located in the front of the X400 capacity cube under
slot 11.

X400 Appliance serial number
The X400 Appliance serial number is a 14-character mix of letters and numbers used to identify the
X400 Appliance to Dell EMC support. It is located on the pull-out information tag on the front of
the X400 platform cube (near slots 10 and 11 in the bottom right corner). The location of the
information tag is shown in the following figure.

The appliance serial number is printed on the white label that has a part number starting with
900-555-. In the following figure, the appliance serial number is APM00192023314.

Monitor the X400 Appliance health
You can monitor the health of the X400 Appliance by using the Appliance tab in the left navigation
pane in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI. To view alerts for the X400 Appliance, click the Alerts
tab in the left navigation pane of the UI, and click Appliance on the Alerts and Events page. For
each component, the UI displays alerts for the X400 Appliance. Clicking an alert provides
additional details.

Safety instructions
WARNING Whenever you need to lift the system, get others to assist you. To avoid injury, do
not attempt to lift the system by yourself.
WARNING Opening or removing the system cover while the system is powered on may expose
you to a risk of electric shock.
CAUTION Do not operate the system without the cover for a duration exceeding five minutes.
Operating the system without the system cover can result in component damage.
CAUTION Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only
perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as
directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is
not authorized by Dell EMC is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety
instructions that came with the product.
WARNING Always use a static mat and anti-static wristband while working on components
inside the system.
CAUTION To ensure proper operation and cooling, all bays in the system and system fans must
be always populated with a component or a blank.
X400 capacity cube extension from the rack
Extending the X400 capacity cube from the rack
This procedure is used to extend the X400 capacity cube from the rack so that the X400 capacity
cube cover can be removed to access the internal FRU components, or used in removing the X400
capacity cube from the rack.
Procedure
1. At the front of the rack, locate the two slam latches on the left and right side of the X400
capacity cube. Press the top of the slam latches inward to release the X400 capacity cube
from the rack.
If the slam latches do not disengage the X400 capacity cube, loosen the screw under each
slam latch.
2. Pull the X400 capacity cube from the rack until the rails lock in the extended position.

Sliding the X400 capacity cube into the rack
Procedure
1. At the front of the rack, push the X400 capacity cube inward until the lock levers click into
place.
2. Push the blue slide release lock tabs forward on both rails and slide the X400 capacity cube
into the rack. The slam latches will engage to secure the X400 capacity cube in the cabinet.

Removing the X400 capacity cube cover
Before you begin
1. Follow the safety instructions.
2. Extend the X400 capacity cube from the rack.
Procedure
1. Using a flat or a Phillips head screwdriver, rotate the latch release lock counter clockwise to
the unlocked position.
2. Lift the latch till the system cover slides back and the tabs on the system cover disengage
from the guide slots on the system.
3. Hold the cover on both sides, and lift the cover away from the system.

Installing the X400 capacity cube cover
Procedure
1. Align the tabs on the X400 capacity cube cover with the guide slots on the X400 capacity
cube.
2. Push the X400 capacity cube cover latch down.
The X400 capacity cube cover slides forward, the tabs on the X400 capacity cube cover
engage with the guide slots on the X400 capacity cube and the X400 capacity cube cover
latch locks into place.
3. Using a flat or Phillips head screwdriver, rotate the latch release lock clockwise to the
locked position.

Cooling fan replacement
The cooling fans are integrated into the X400 capacity cube to dissipate the heat generated by the
functioning of the X400 capacity cube. These fans provide cooling for the processors, expansion
cards, and memory modules.
The X400 capacity cube supports up to six high performance hot swappable cooling fans. You do
not need to shut down the X400 capacity cube to replace a cooling fan.
CAUTION Mixing of standard and high performance cooling fans is not supported.
Note: Each fan is listed in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, referenced by the respective
fan number. If there is a problem with a particular fan, you can easily identify and replace the
proper fan by noting the fan numbers on the cooling fan assembly.
Removing the cooling fan
Before you begin
WARNING Opening or removing the X400 capacity cube cover when the X400 capacity cube
is on may expose you to a risk of electric shock. Exercise utmost care while removing or
installing cooling fans.
CAUTION The cooling fans are hot swappable. To maintain proper cooling while the X400
capacity cube is on, replace only one fan at a time.
1. Follow the safety instructions.
2. Identify the failed fan by checking the Alerts and Events > Appliance tab in the PowerProtect
Data Manager UI. Note down the node ID (for example, Capacity cube 06) and the fan number.
3. Extend the X400 capacity cube from the rack.
4. Remove the X400 capacity cube cover.
Procedure
1. Press the release tab and lift the cooling fan out of the cooling fan assembly.
